Good films?

Hey there,

any good suggestions for films? I've pestered my dad into agreeing to bring some new movies when he comes back from work in Aussie, to stock up the DVD collection. Please no horror/thriller/uber-action

Thankee's!

No Thrillers or Horror or Uber action movies. That leaves Rom-Coms and Weepers and psuedo action movies. I don't have any that really stand out. But I don't go to movies much anymore.

Serenity is a great movie!

On the comedy side: Zoolander, Tommy Boy, Kung Pow, Undercover Brother, to name a few.

I'm suggesting these following movies only in hopes that you already own them: Harry Potter 1-7, Lord of the Rings 1-3, Star Wars 1-6

You'd be surprised how many people don't own/scene these movies. It's sad.

Now these next few are favorites of mine: Brigadoon, Wizard of Oz, Meet Me in Saint Louis, Harvey Girls and Singing in the Rain.

Yes those are all musicals in which Gene Kelly and Judy Garland are part of

Oh and before I forget, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers

Hey Nyanna. I just saw your brother's welcome to DM thread. I think a nice cup of tea might help with that eye twitch.

Oh, do you have Ghostbusters? I just thought about it from the game over at WT.

How new of movies are you looking for? Do you have Princess Bride?

I've heard that name mentioned here a lot lately. What's it about?

Not those either lol. I don't mind the aforementioned, but my family doesn't like them. I watch everything really. What about adventure.action/fantasy/comedy???

Ooh...Five People You Meet In Heaven!!

Most awesome movie ever. :D

I'll take it from the film maker!

We have the Harry Potters, LotR (OF COURSE!!!), and some Star Wars

Thanks everyone for the suggestions, I'm looking them all up and will definitely ask Dad to get some!

No...is it a film too??? I saw the game and didn't quite get it lol.

Thanks for the tea, why yes it's quite...soothing  lolz

How bout Sci-fi..? Cause there's Stargate, Startrek (old and new).

Also Ghostbusters rock!!

Who ya gonna call??!!

parenthood.... unless your family's nuts. truman show i liked. forrest gump was good. big, all the sweet 16 movies, really. 16 candles, now that i think of it. weird science. the haunting 1963 - horror, but no gore. just scary as heck. breakfast club. my mom loves thoe national lampoon vacation movies. i like the canterville ghost, the b&w one.

um... can't they just get you netflix?

i love merchant ivory stuff, some people cna't stay awake for it. my left foot is very good.

universal horror won't scare you, it's all black and white and as funny as scary.

mel brooks, old ones. young frankenstein, blazing saddles, high anxiety, like that.

Singing in the Rain always makes me think of A Clockwork Orange though.

Does anyone else do the same thing with Steeler's Wheel's Stuck In The Middle With You, after watching Reservoir Dogs of course?

Speaking of, most Tarantino movies are a safe bet, Robert Rodriguez's are better if you're a little more into action.

Just to represent the "out there" movies, since no one else has yet:

Memento. Guy Pearce, insanely good plot and direction

Requiem For A Dream. Should be a prerequisite to going into high school. Won't exactly make you feel good about life, but powerful stuff nonetheless.

The Prestige. Hugh Jackman and Christian Bale battle it out as magicians. Way, way, WAY cooler than it sounds. One of those movies you'll wanna rewatch over and over...

The Big Lebowski. The Dude. As long as you're fine with a little bit (ok a lot) of swearing, this movie is just incredible

Bladerunner. Might seem slightly dated to you, but one of the best adaptation's of Philip K. Dick's incredible stories. Do Androids dream of electric sheep?

Dr. Strangelove, or How I Stopped Worrying and Learned To Love the Bomb. Practically invented the genre of dark comedies. While we're on Kubrick...

Full Metal Jacket, A Clockwork Orange, Barry Lyndon, 2001: A Space Odyssey, and The Shining are all pretty much must sees

Brazil. Had to rep my favorite director, Terry Gilliam  This movie is like Requiem in that it's not exactly a pick-me-upper, but the number this movie will do on you is astounding. Great visuals, like any Terry Gilliam movie.

Donnie Darko. Jake Gylenhaal's career-launching vehicle, it's sweet mixed with sour. Kinda like...

American Beauty. Kevin Spacey is one of the most underrated actors of our time, the main role of the movie was pretty much made for him, or he for it if you wanna look at it that way.

Life is Beautiful. I needed a positive one to round out the list a bit. WARNING: subtitles unless you speak Italian.

Princess Mononoke. Anime with an incredible cast and great story, powerful themes.

Fight Club. Brad Pitt, Edward Norton. I had no idea this movie would be as good as it ended up being. Based on a novel by Chuck Polahniuk, one of my favorite non-fantasy authors. Chews you up and spits you out. Speaking of Edward Norton...

American History X. Some extremely violent images and notions and whatnot, but if you can tolerate that this movie is amazing. Ed Norton is one of the most chameleon-like of any modern actor.

Dark City. I realized this list was def leaning into the dark direction a bit, so why not put one on that has dark in the name? Great small scope sci-fi flick. Shut it down.

Okay I think I've submitted enough for ya, but if you haven't seen Princess Bride def do so soon!

Stargate is very good. Surprised that Horus would like the movie with the Egyptian theme.

Nyanna, you were joking, right?

*cringe* ...nope... I don't have TV, and my parents are ve-ry selective concerning DVDs.

Hehe, good idea but my internet's no good for that. I have taken to downloading some stuff off youtube since I got my ipod tho. When I'm in town, that is. Which is, almost never. :/

I liked Forrest Gump. I should have gotten the Breakfast Club for media studies this year...dang.

Also, thanks for that monster list Des! I'll be definitely asking for some of those.
