Actually, I agree that Life is more about chaos than death, but I think it's arguable that life=light. Death is more indicative of order, or at least the process of death (as in as a transformation). However, Life itself can be said to be comprised mainly of suffering and discord, and that passage from life can be thought of as a "sweet release". See Moridin's philosophy and my latest blog

I always forget to check those blogs. I must admit that I, while writing that post, was thinking of Heroes of Might and Magic IV. It's a computer game with 5 types of magic, and they all have friends and enemies. If you place them in a circle (friends next to each other), you would get Nature, Life (I, however, think that Nature would be better for Light), Order, Death, Chaos, and then you're back at Nature.

Have you read Modessit's recluse series. That is basically the foundation of the battle he expresses between Order and Chaos. Too much order creates a lack of the spark needed for life. Too much chaos and There is insufficient structure for life to exist. There must be a proper balance between the twon.

That one is on my to-read list. And it's very true that life has elements of both order and chaos in it, but generally speaking when it comes to literary canon, good = order, and evil = chaos. I think the analogy also translates easily to WoT terms: light is all about staying the course in the pattern, and following through with your role, where as the Shadow represents those trying to break out of the system of order created for them and help the Great Lord of the Dark spread chaos.

I'd say it's pretty easy to arrive at the conclusion that chaos theory serves the Shadow more than it does the Light. Goin with the whole balance thing, good vs. evil can also be expressed as order vs. chaos. Chaos allows for the disintegration of any rules, morals, or guidelines which Lighties would normally try and use to suppress the Shadowies. And drawing strength and support from Chaos just makes it better, the ethical questions that would stop a lightie from harnessing the power of chaos in the universe would never get asked over in the Shadow.

What? Chaos isn't internal, it's only external. Thus, good isn't necessarily order and evil isn't necessarily chaos. Considering that chaos theory is merely a scientific idea (which probably isn't even true in Randland....), I don't see why it should be Shadow or Light. If you mean simply chaos, then on DM terms, both Factions would readily grab that label....

I think you would've been faster if you would've done it with my posts.

This is interestingly ironic, actually. I just read a fantasy novel set in the future. Except in this future, there was....Order. To speak in the book's terms, humanity came out of the Age of Chaos via a virus that stripped humans of all emotions except fear. Everything was in perfect peace. There was no war, no emotion except fear, and all was in Order....It was the epitome of 'picture-perfect'....and it was the worst thing that could have happened. It is kind of similar, in a way, to Brave New World by Aldous Huxley. But anyway, to keep it short, Chaos=Good, in real life that is. God made it that way for good reason.

Sounds like a great book Locke, you remember the title of it?

I def agree in general with the notion that Chaos can easily = good, or = Life. In the physical or cosmological concept, the level of entropy (basically, chaos) in a system is indicative of the chances for that system to sustain life.

But in the classic literary interpretation, order=good and chaos=bad

btw, if anyone wants to continue this discussion, if you're a lightie you don't have to worry about me using this thread to convert another of you

It is Forbidden by Ted Dekker. However, be warned that is the first book in a series that just came out. Although Ted Dekker writes prettttty fast. He wrote The Circle trilogy in a year.
