Editor’s Note

by Lanette (Der'mandarb – Infantry Regiment)

Welcome once again to another edition of the Hornsounder, the showcase of the creative talents of the Banders. This month too, we have lined up some great articles for your reading pleasure.

But first, I have some exciting news to share with you. I have taken on an official co-editor. Yup, you heard me right! Any guesses? If you’ve been a regular reader of the Hornsounder it won’t be too difficult. Of course it is…*drumrolls*….JIMMITH! (Yay!!!) You know what that means, right? More great graphics for the Hornsounder! Well, actually Jimmith is only part of the good news. Another greatly talented person has indicated an interest in becoming more involved in putting together our newsletter. I’m immensely impressed with this person, but I think I’ll keep their identity to myself till next month and give you all something to look forward to!

Ok, so without further ado, let’s take a look at what we’ll find in this edition of the Hornsounder.

We kick things off with an interesting article about the Rosslyn Chapel of Scotland, famous for its connection with the Knights Templar. (On a side note, anyone who is interested in knowing more about the Templars might find the website http://www.templarhistory.com interesting )

Next up are two intervews with a Keltic Queen and a Bearded Elf! (I especially recall seeing this particular elf fooling around the Band Campfires in a cute li’l green tutu!) I’m sure you’re going to find the intervews very interesting!

Further on, you’ll find a very impressive biography of one of the most loved Generals in Randland - Devram Bashere. I have to tell you, this particular article is one of the best that I had ever read on the Hornsounder. I congratulate the author on his excellent work.

Ok, here’s another secret that I’ve been waiting to spring on you. We have a brand new column where you can get all the most wicked answers to your burning problems! I greatly encourage you to make use of this column, as we all know that you won’t get a better shrink around the Band camp than Doc Caddy!

In keeping with the spirit of Halloween, we have the Part 01 of a great short story named “Attack of the One Lace Shoeâ€. I hope it’ll send thrilling shivers down your spine! Keep an eye out for the Part 02, which will be in the next edition of the Hornsounder.

A brief, yet interesting article you’ll come across is about the deadly close combat weapon called the “Saber Clawsâ€. Now that one sure gave me some ideas...*grins evilly* (Did anybody watch “Rodrickâ€?)

You will also come across an account of a Bander of her transition from Raw Recruit to Bander, and about her very first Spot Fine.

As usual we have the Regiments’ Monthly Columns and the best Album, Gig and Holiday Reviews submitted by the Banders.

We wrap this month’s Hornsounder up with a hilarious account of an incident that a Bander came across in a park...*giggles*. Ok, that’s all I’m telling. Scroll down and read for yourself. *Giggles*.

The Sterling Family, Patrons of Rosslyn

by K’Jar (Scout – Cavalry Regiment)

During my research into the Sterling Family, patrons of Rosslyn, I have been unable to find any connection or evidence thereof. Apparently a few of my “highers†saw a show on the Discovery Channel which talked about this topic. Looked and couldn’t find any thing. Instead I will concentrate on the Rosslyn Chapel and the connection between it, the Knights Templar, and the Free Masons.

As some of you know Rosslyn is a chapel located about 6 miles south of Edinburgh, Scotland. (I think I’ve been there…have to see if I have some pictures). Through the centuries it has been rumored to have been a haven for the Knights Templar. Much of the stone work is depicted with many of the Templar symbols. Some believe them to be codes for the lost Templar treasure or even clues to find the Holy Grail.

Rosslyn and the surrounding area is also thought to be one of the starting places, or at least has a connection to, the modern day Free Masons. After the disbanding and outlawing or the Knights Templar many believe they went underground or joined the Hospitlars, an order of the Templars dedicated to treating the sick. Along with their fabled treasure the Templars are gone.

Now here is where some speculation comes in. Many believe that the Free Masons are the Knights Templar reborn or at least a version of them. Now I haven’t been able to research this very much but from what I’ve seen I feel this to be true. Now the Free Masons have a Templar Degree. Also many of their symbols and traditions are based on the Templar.

Today the Free Masons are to be found in just about every town in America. Their contributions to society have been generous and plentiful. I believe they still embody the traditions and values of the long ago Templar Knights: Protecting the weak, helping the less fortunate, and seeking knowledge.

Foo Fighters: Live & Acoustic @ Sydney Opera House

by Ozhammer (Sniper – Archery Regiment)

What is it about the Foo Fighters? They consistently produce rock songs that prove to be popular with a wide section of music fans. They tour Australia yearly, and sell out their concerts, and draw more fans in with each show. Their infectious music is perfectly suited for stadium concerts. Which is why this current tour proved to be something different. A hard rock band playing acoustic versions of their songs? How would the public react, and would they be able to produce the goods as standalone musicians without the aid of a Fender and a wall of amps? Aiding to the pressure, they would be performing at the famous Sydney Opera House, in one of the few occasions a rock band was allowed to play there.

The Foo's latest album (2005) is a double sided project named "In Your Honour". The first CD is devoted to the bands staple, hard rock, and features the title song, No Way Back, Resolve and the anthemic Best of You. The 2nd CD however, is purely acoustic, and features the like of Norah Jones, and Led Zeppelin bassist John Paul Jones as collaborators. It is the 15 years of acoustic songs (starting with lead man Dave Grohl's earliest foray into songwriting when he was in Nirvana). It was this decision to showcase the Foo's softer side that lead to this tour, to be played at more intimate venues.

Everyman lead singer Dave Grohl is one of the main reasons the band is so popular. Charming and witty, he engages the audience. Grohl is like the crazy mate that everyone seems to have. Instead of being a rockstar, you could easily imagine Hime sitting on a stool in a pub, having a few beers and talking bullsh*t to his mates. It is this unpretentious and working class attitude that proves so endearing to the crowds, the honesty of it all.

Grohl entered the arena to cascading applause. He said hello and said "check this sh*t out". He launched into a gentle balled (Razor) that built into a crescendo as he was joined on stage by his bandmates. The band performed beautifully acoustically, hypnotising the crowd with their honest, simple and passionate music. Highlights for myself were a spine tingling version of "Hero", the classic Foo's song "Big Me", and "Times Like These" and "Everlong". Equally impressive was Grohl's tribute to former Nirvana bandmate Kurt Cobain "Friend of a Friend". Shifflet and Mendel strummed perfectly, while on the skins, Taylor Hawkins was at his furious best. Also assisting were violinist Petra Haden, guitarist Pat Smear, percussionist Drew Hester (triangles and maracas lol) and Rami Jaffee on the keyboards. All assisted frontman Grohl in a fantastic concert.

After 5 minutes off clapping and screaming, Dave came out for an encore. He explained how he liked singing the gentler acoustic songs, and not having his throat feel like gasoline had been poured down it. He then blew everyone away with a ferocious rendition of "Best of You" as a solo. The power and passion genterated by his voice evoked primal and emotive feelings as he growled his way through the song, as he was later joined by the ensemble for one last song.

Probably the best concert I have been to in terms of enjoyment. The Foo's surprised me by how well they handled the acoustic sets, and showcased their musical talents. If there is a better live rock band at the moment, I havent heard them. They were great. Pics to follow!

Dave Grohl and Taylor Hawkins jammin!

Of Keltic Queens and Bearded Elves

by Mystica (Legionaire – Infantry Regiment)

Finding her way to DM only a couple of months ago, this Scottish Lady has fast become an integrated influence of the online world of Randland. As a she-wolf pup and Warder-to-be, Taymist has joined the ranks of the Infantry in The Band of the Red Hand and saw fit to assign this Raw Recruit with her Regiment Tasks.

With great pleasure and a little grin, I made a 360° turn and targeted her with a couple of questions for this assigned interview.

Being Scottish to her soul, Tay also loves to meet new people and see new places. Among her favorites are Omagh, Co. Tyrone and the Isle of Skye, where she was following the trail of her family tree.

Taymist feels a deep similarity to Aeron, Queen of Kelts. This fictional character was introduced to her through her favorite book series ‘The Keltiad’, written by Patricia Kenneally Morrison.

Her love for the books was fed by the amount of Gaelic and Celtic History and Legends scattered over the pages. Aeron won Tay’s affection with her wit, magical as well as physical strength and a fierce temper, which ‘reminds Tay of a certain someone’. Deciding factor for Tay’s devotion to the character though was her relationship with Gwydion, turning Tay’s romantic soul to mush in a heartbeat.

For those planning on going to Scotland, Tay has some sane advice which is not to be taken lightly. Scotland, after all, isn’t a place for the weak of heart or fragile of skin. Nature itself reflects the fiesty character of this marvelous place and a decent set of warm coats and stout shoes aren’t an exaggerated luxury to have in your suitcase. Umbrella’s may give you a look of sophistication but you best leave them at home if you don’t want to sacrifice them to the Scottish wind swooping them out of your hand while laughing at the silliness of bringing such a thing within its range.

Last, but definitely not least, this reporter strongly urges you to pack a healthy sense of humour for your adventure among the Lads and Lasses. These age-tested warriors are known for their pranks and will not hesitate to target any inattentive victim. This is demonstrated by Tay’s own favorite prank she played on one of her closest friends when she immediately found eager accomplices to replace a poor man’s brand new, shiny jaguar with an exact model from the scrap yard. After being picked up from the cobblestones and surviving his first heart attack, the man instantly launched into a laughing fit, enjoying the joke at his expense every bit as much as the rest of them.

Beware, oh stranger, for thou will be watched…

For my second interview, I went roaming the boards and found a willing candidate in the form of a mysterious gentleman.

At this point, it is this reporter’s duty to warn the reader that the following information might shock you to the core and you may not be so lucky to have the lovely Tay at your side to revive you.

Eager to unlock some of this mystery guy’s doors, I opened with what I believed to be a rather easy question and enquired as to his favorite WOT character, besides the ones in the Band, thinking this would give the reader an insight into the interviewee’s style. Still blessing my lucky stars for Tay’s presence, I vividly recall my world going black, the ground opening up beneath me and the horrid feeling of being sucked into oblivion.

Spacey, being the true gentleman that he is, yet at the same time desiring to deliver honest and truthful information, gently revealed how he never read the books but was drawn to DM by the community and the atmosphere he found there. However, character tests have shown that he would be a very convincing Davram Bashere.

Moving on to the more personal inquisitions, Spacey reveals more of himself, allowing this reporter time to collect herself.

Always ready to help, this self proclaimed knight in feathery armor would find no difficulty in acting as a faerie with a fear of heights in his daughter’s school play. This immediately resulted in Cadsuane launching into a creative stupor to present Spacey with a brand new sig picture entitled ‘Bearded Elvin Ballerina drinking Brew’.

Spacey feels a strong affinity to the wolverines with whom he shares a deceivingly docile appearance covering a fierce and strongheaded will. A special affection is mentioned towards the claw aspect of the wolverine, warning every one to stay their distance when up to no good. Always in for a good laugh and first in line to partake in goodhearted pranks, this prancing pup will turn to defender of the weak in a split second when the line is crossed. Where that line lies exactly, no one knows. You might be wise not to try to find out, though.

Just when this reporter started to feel it might be a good idea to try out the seat a little further away from this dangerous source, he smoothes things over by showing a more gentle and sweet part of himself.

Funny…. Definitely. But sweet.

It seems fair to warn the readers not to challenge Spacey to anything to do with doors. And this is for his sake.

Apparently, our guest has a tendency to move more slowly than the orders sent by his mind to his body, resolving in rather embarrassing and quite painful situations, like slamming the door of a closet closed while his head was still inside it. Needless to say this experience left a lasting impression on him and to this day he is reminded of the virtue of balance between mind and body.

It is with great pleasure and honor I present to you, dear readers: Spacey, The wolf-hearted Gentleman. (with a weird love for bearded elves…)

October Cavalry News

by Angyl (Scout – Cavalry Regiment)

We've started on a new term, and that means new leadership roles within the Cavalry. We are pleased to announce Twinflower as our new Captain-General, and our Banner Captains, Goldeneyes and Manriva. RLOs for this term are BridMorgan and Katiora, and our Red Arms are Steelaxe, Shadowhelm, and Rayden.

We are pleased to announce our newest Cavalry members, K'Jar with his volleyball Wilson, who joined us on October 9. We are also saddened this month by the loss of our Fair Lady Sheliara, but we are certain she will be very happy with her new home in the Archers regiment.

Several members of the Cavalry have been promoted this month; Froix from Captain to Lieutenant-Captain, BridMorgan from Corporal to Sergeant, Twinflower and Manriva from Lieutenant to Captain, Shadowhelm from Corporal to Sergeant, and K'Jar and Angyl from Private to Corporal.

This term has seen the beginning of our Page Program, where new cavalry members get to spend a week with each of our Orders of Knights (Sarmation, Templar, and Arthurians.) Currently enrolled in this program are Shauna, BridMorgan, Angyl, K'Jar, and Shadowhelm.

Some of the things that are going on in the Cavalry include our pumpkin-carving contest at the Warhorse Bar and Grill, and our new "radio station" KCAV is currently fielding all types of Halloween related questions and playing great Halloween music.

In other news, the Cavalry has chosen a theme song. It is to the tune of "Beer For My Horses" by Toby Keith featuring Willie Nelson:

Well a man come on the old trade road

Said somebody's been stabbed

Somebody's been abused

Somebody burned down a building

Somebdy stole a cart

Somebody got away

Somebody didn't get too far

They didn't get too far, yeah

Grandpappy told my Pappy back in my day son

A man had to answer for the wicked things he'd done

Take all the rope in Caemlyn

Find a tall Leatherleaf

Round up all of them bad boys

Hang 'em high in the street

For all the people to see

(chorus):

That justice is the one thing you should always find

You gotta saddle up your knights

You gotta draw a hard line

When the charge dust settles we'll sing a victory tune

And we'll all meet back at the local saloon

And we'll raise up our glasses against evil forces, singing

Bandy for my men, Brew for my horses

We go too many darkfriends doing dirty deeds

Too much corruption and crime in the streets

It's time the long arm of the Band put a few more in the ground

Send 'em all to the Creator, and he'll settle 'em down

You can bet he'll set 'em down.

(repeat chorus)

Thanks to StaffMaster for lyrics

That's about all for October in the Cavalry, but I'm sure November will be just as exciting and fun-filled.

Fleetwood Mac - Then Play On

by Manriva (Lance-Captain - Cavalry Regiment)

1 - Coming Your Way..... 7

2 - Closing My Eyes..... 6

3 - Show-Biz Blues..... 7

4 - My Dream..... 6

5 - Underway.....7

6 - Oh Well..... 10

7 - Although The Sun Is Shining..... 6

8 - Rattlesnake Shake..... 10

9 - Searching For Madge..... 8

10-Fighting For Madge..... 9

11-When You Say..... 6

12-Like Crying...... 6

13-Before The Beginning...... 6

Oh Well

The Rave Up first part anyway

This is the final recording of the Peer Green era Fleetwood Mac. Green, Mick Fleetwood and John McVie left John Mayalls Bluesbreakers in the late 60's and with Jeremy Spencer formed A Blues/Rock powerhouse. Green was every bit the great guitarist that Eric Clapton and Jeff Beck were and Fleetwood Mac stayed closer to the blues than the others, causing them never to gain the major acclaim of the huge names who moved in a more popular direction.

Then Play On has the addition of new member Danny Kirwan, a third guitarist and prolific writer, who would become the bands titular leader after Greens departure. He more or less led the band until the last recording before Buckingham? Nicks joined in ‘75.

The recording starts right off with a Kirwan penned tune, Coming Your Way that hints at the direction this recording was to take, two leads of crystal clear guitars and then Greens searing leads to spice the thing up. Sweet is the only way to describe it. Closing My Eyes is an unrelenting slow lament with again three guitars each a different style this time with Green playing a Spanish tinged acoustic this time. Show-Biz Blues is Green playing a Delta slide style and only a tambourine and had claps for accompaniment, lovely. My Dream is an ethereal instrumental hinting at things to came for the band. Underway is a Hendrix cosmic jazz type of instrumental thing and was a mesmerizing song live. Oh Well is the most copied song they ever did. Starting with a 3 lead rave up it simply smothers the later attempts of Lindsey Buckingham to perform it live, although he did a hellluva job trying. It evolves into an instrumental, theme for an imaginary western move with Spanish style acoustic huge bass notes from Kerwin and finally an ethereal flute of some kind. My favorite F/Mac song ever. Although The Sun Is Shining another ballad by Kerwin is simply a break before Rattlesnake Shake another 3/4 speed heavy blues killer. A paen to an activity that many alter boys grew up thinking they were going to the devil for participating in. A huge powerful song. Searching for Madge and Fighting For Madge are two parts of the same instrumental rave up, and feature blazing guitar work from both Green and Kerwin. Fleetwood and McVie wrote these and play their butts off. When You Say, Like Crying and Before the Beginning are all three slow with the middle song a pure blues number.

Anyone who likes Fleetwood Mac today should find this disc to hear what they were all about before the pop wave caught them. They were one of the most influential Blues Rock outfits ever.

My Favorite Close Combat Weapon

by Justin (Raw Recruit)

Sabre claws are a pair of curved daggers that go down your forearm. The blade is 12 inches long. The handles are skin leather-wrapped with saw back serrations across your knuckles. The sabre claws are made from steel.

sabreclaw.jpg

This deadly weapon was made during the Samurai age in Japan around the 1800's. It was an excellent weapon to use for assassins in tight areas, where a sword would be too large to weild properly or with effectiveness.

They are extremely good weapons to use during brawls because if you miss the person you swing at, the blade will normally catch the enemy and cut right through them. If you punched someone square with your fist, the serrations would break the bone very easily as well as leave a huge cut.

From Raw Recruit to Bander

by Mystica (Legionaire – Infantry Regiment)

When NorthStar brought me in the band I had no idea of what I would find. Not taking anything very serious or overly involved, I decided to play along and see where things would get me.

Signing up for the Raw Recruit Program, I started my intro-weeks with the Infantry, where I immediately was snatched up by Taymist and Spacey and kept quite busy with my Regiment Tasks. Not knowing the back from the front of anything resembling a sword, I started my sword training with a wooden training sword which I baptized “Little Woodyâ€. Taking a good look at all the different sword forms, which looked like Chinese to me right then, I gulped, took a deep breath and decided on the 3 I would practice for my Task Assignment. After some considerable tips and advice from Kristine, the Infantry CG, things got a lot better and I managed to perform my spar to satisfaction of both the CG and the task master.

In between sword practice I had to serve at the local bar, which was even tougher and more tiresome, since these infants... Man, do they get thirsty! Luckily though, there is the Hammock Inn, where I could just up and relax in some very comfy hammocks listening to the soothing sounds of the sea waves rushing on the nearby rocks.

I won my regiment point with an interview of two Infantry members, which can also be found in this edition of the Hornsounder.

My second week, I was sent to the cavalry. At first, I was a tad bit intimidated by all the big scary men in plate armor and beards fingering long lances and looking right through me. But soon that was all forgotten as I was presented with brew after brew and I figured out that those stern looks were nothing more than brave attempts to see clearly after drinking all that Bandy. I was presented my tasks by Lady Bridmorgan and started to inspect the area that was claimed by this regiment. Strolling along, I found the pasture, made by Lady Twinflower, where the non-claimed horses were kept and where I had to pick out my steed for the week. For at the end of my stay there, I was expected to partake in a Joust against one of the established Knights (gulp), which turned out to be Sir Son of Battles (sir Sob). In an unexpected turn of events, a stalion known not to allow anyone on it's back, chose me and without getting any chance to have a say in the matter, I had no other choice but to use him. It was a perfect match and I named him Spirit in honour of his character and personality.

In between horse riding and drinking Bandy (these cavs honestly can drink like it's mother's milk) and when I managed to get loose from a very clingy, yet unbelievably lovable ball, named Wilson, I had to find time to go on a scavenger hunt. For my regiment point I had to respond to a review, which left me with some difficulty, since none of the reviews seemed to trigger anything in me. However, I managed after some searching to find a match.

For my last week I was whooshed off to the Archers, where I found myself surrounded by a bunch of complete nutters and goofers who loved nothing more than laugh, play pranks and chat all day (and night). However, when push comes to shove, these prank(st)ers become fierce as hell and their arrows never miss target. And they do not joke around when it comes to archery. My first business was to go to the training ground and practice in no less than 3 archer disciplines, which would decide the type of pin I would receive (Bronze, Silver or Gold). After a brutal amount of practicing, I managed to win the Gold pin, of which I'm obviously quite proud!

Needless to say that after all this sweaty work, I could use a few drinks, so I gulped down as many Flaming Shots as I could find and had a good night's rest. My next task was something I had dreaded... Writing JoTS verses. Imagine my surprise when I managed to write the required verses in all but 5 minutes! And more than that, now I'm hooked. *shakes head at mysterious ways*

A brutal assault was made on the CG of the Archers, Vorkia, who was killed by some mean assassin, and I was charged to find the murderer, using a Cluedo type of system. My luck was upon me though, as I shocked both myself and the regiment by finding the culprit on my second guess! Nevertheless, Vorkia has to stay a ghost till the end of October. (which she seems to be enjoying, actually)

My last task was a secret assignment, which I can not reveal even today, but I can report that it was executed perfectly and my task master was quite pleased with it.

So, after 3 interesting weeks in which I learned things I never imagined I would be able to do, drank more brew than I ever managed in my life, had pains in body parts I never knew existed and laughs that left me gasping for air, I came to the point where I had to pick my permanent regiment. It wasn't all that easy, regardless how obvious it may have seemed to all these Banders, as each regiment has huge appeal for various and different reasons.

After a lot of doubting and soul searching, I announced my choice: The Infantry.

So now, Little Woody and I are training to get my real sword and get me on my way to becoming an Officer.

Wicked Good Advice

by Cadsuane (Sniper – Archery Regiment)

Dear Nondescript(ive),

Get a thesaurus and improve your vocabulary. Then feel free to compose another letter posing your question when you are better equipped to identify specifically the relevant issue. Until then, the best advice I can give is to do this thing to your thing from your other thing and other actions best not described in detail. ^_^

DearCaddy-2.jpg

Dear Confused,

Well, first thing would be to leave the Cavalry, since EVERYONE gets confused and sleepy around them! Next, go on a diet. Clearly your obesity (caused by the lack of exercise from riding around on a horse all day, represented in the dream by the millions of ice cream cones you have finished) is preventing you from reaching some particular goal (the cliff). As soon as you are as thin as Nicole Richie, the dreams will stop! Only to be replaced by the wish to die a quick death to avoid the travesty your life has become. O_o

Davram Bashere, a Great Leader

by Direwolf Jon (Raw Recruit)

I have done my research on Davram Bashere. In the following article I will discuss why I like him, give a brief background of him, tell who he is and what his role was up to Crossroads of Twilight. I have not yet read Knife of Dreams, so I can’t give current information on that.

There are several reasons why I like Davram. For one, he has good strategic skills and is very smart. An example of this is in the middle of The Fires of Heaven, his entire army disappears from Saldaea. In Lord of Chaos he keeps Rand from breaking the seal that Taim gave him. One of his most memorable quotes for me, was in The Path of Daggers, in chapter 23 when he says, “The worst mistake is to make the same one twice, and we won’t.â€

He also realizes that Rand needs the Aes Sedai. Bashere and his men were a big help to Rand in the raid of Illian. In Crossroads of Twilight chapter 24, Rand reminds Davram what Davram had told him. This was, “If your enemy offers you two targets, strike at a third.†The second reason I like him is that he has given his loyalty to Rand. He places his cavalry in Rand’s army. Davram also creates an army out of the men rejected by Taim for training at the Black Tower.

A third reason I like him is that he has to deal with Faile as his daughter and Perrin as a son-in-law. It has to be tough to have a daughter become a Hunter of the Horn and get married without you knowing what is going on. I mean, you find out your child is married and you never met their significant other. That would be a shocking thing that needs to be handled in the proper manner. Somehow, he pulled through it and accepted Perrin as his son-in-law. He also has his wife with him the entire time and knows when to give in and when to be stubborn. Now that I have explained why I like him, I will provide a brief background of Davram.

Davram Bashere is one of the best leaders in the series. When Queen Tenobia was younger, he became her Marshal-General. He is the husband of Deira Bashere and the father of Zarine (Faile) and Maedin. Davram is also the uncle of Queen Tenobia. He has a hooked beak of a nose, a gray-streaked moustache and dark tilted eyes. Although he is of normal stature for Saldaeans, he is considered short by most people. The background of Davram Bashere has helped shape person that he is.

Davram Bashere is the High Seat of House Bashere, Guardian of the Blightborder, Defender of the Heartland, and Marshal-General to Queen Tenobia of Saldaea. He is also the leader of the cavalry for Rand, and he helps advise Rand on battles. Davram seems to be a man of good and he does as Rand asks. In A Crown of Swords, Davram makes mention of Caraline and Toran being camped outside of Camelyn. He says, “They didn’t come together by chance, now right at this time, they did not. That is a pit of vipers to have on your doorstep, whoever you are.â€

However, he also gives Rand his opinion on situations and helps try to formulate plans with Bael and Rand and other people in high places in Rand’s army. He knows when to listen and when to give the orders to people and understands command order. For example in ACoS chapter 41, he says, “The city is ours, or should I say yours.†I have mentioned a little bit of his roles in each of these previous three paragraphs, but here is more on his role.

Bashere was seen a few times in Crossroads of Twilight. At the beginning of the book he is surveying the besieging armies with Bael. He goes to find Logain so they can agree on a plan. Rand then sends Bashere with Logain and Loial to discuss a truce with the Seanchan. He ends up meeting High Lady Suroth and tries to negotiate, but she wants Rand to meet Tuon. This happened in the epilogue of CoT. Bashere’s current role was defined by these things but again I don’t know what he did in KoD.

In the article I mention why I like Bashere, give a brief background on him, tell who he is and what his role was through CoT. It is clear that he knows how to be a good leader and strives for success. All of the things I mentioned in the article are reasons why I chose to research Davram for my recruit assignment.

Tybee Island, Georgia

by Angyl (Scout – Cavalry Regiment)

I was recently lucky enough to take a weeks vacation to Tybee Island, GA, which is located just off the coast of Georgia, about 20 miles from Savannah. We went with myself, my husband and our children, his parents, and his two sisters and their children. As we had a rather large group, we stayed in a large beachside cottage.

We arrived on October 6th, just in time for their second annual Tybee Pirate Festival. It happened to be rainy with a chill to the air when we arrived, so we elected not to go to the harbor to welcome the pirate ships. The next day, however, was bright and sunny, and the celebration was in full swing. There was an arts and crafts fair, music on the pier, and a good time was had by all, culminating in a parade that evening.

Tybee has miles of beaches, perfect for surfing, swimming, sunbathing, and shell hunting at high tide. Other attractions on the island include great shopping, Fort Screven, and the Tybee Lighthouse, which has been guiding ships into the Savannah River for 270 years. The Lighthouse stands 154 feet high, and is open to the public for a minimal cost ($6 for an adult ticket). There is no elevator, and the climb is 178 steps. Yes, I climbed it!

Then there's nearby Fort Pulaski, built in 1847, and used during the Civil War. You can still see cannonballs in the walls there.

A short drive will take you into historic and beautiful Savannah, GA. We spent days just shopping along the Riverwalk. The stones that pave the streets were originally ballasts to keep empty cargo ships balanced when they sailed to the new colony to pick up their goods. Savannah is rich in beautiful architecture and scenery.

My first spotfine

by Mystica (Legionaire – Infantry Regiment)

Being a fresh and sparkly new member of the Infantry, I was excited to welcome and play with the new Recruits, as one can imagine. These deliciously juicy younguns are so much fun to toy with that the rush of it all overthrew my better judgement.

Now, anyone with a heart might argue that what happened was totally innocent, though no Bander would probably agree. Not that they don’t have heart, mind ya’. It’s just that a Bander’s heart has its priorities firmly in place. Not to mention that they (we, I should say *beams*) definitely love their pranks, jokes, laughs and banter. And when it can all be done within the established law, it’s all the more fabulous.

So here I was, all excited like a mouse in a cheese shop, playing around with one of our new Recruits. Dancing around the rooms, poring brew down the Recruit on every step. When I noticed Nighteyes wickedly hoarding Brew on her table, which triggered the evil twin inside me. Off I went, twirling the Recruit passed her table and snatching up the Brew and sharing it with the lucky guy.

Needless to say, Nighteyes was quite shocked…

Her Knight in Tightly armor was alert, however, and jumped on me like a flee on a dog. Immediately I was spotfined by this Cavalier with a Superman complex. Trying his best to appear big and scary (failing miserably in them tights), he sent me on a spotfine to write a poem on how mean and stuff it was to steal brew.

After agonizing nights (1), countless headaches (0), hours of self-pity (2) and endless shame (not), I finally managed to stumble together a halfway decent thing that some might call a poem. Gallons of sweat and liters of Brew it took for me to find the few lines that fit in to the ridiculous demands of this Red Arm.

To top it all off, I was manhandled and tortured for hours on end till I was left with no choice but to use that awful title this RA (Steel Axe) wanted me to use.

It seems my punishment may not yet be at an end, as Steel Axe, Knight in Tights, was so pleased with the result he actually threatened to spotfine me more often.

So, for your reading pleasure, here is the ‘poem’ that I was so brutally forced to write.

Cuz’ I just know that you get some weird, perverted pleasure out of seeing other people suffer!

Yeah… you… No need to hide it! It’s all over your face. That stupid, drooling grin…

I would rather steal myself than steal brew

In fun and games we play our part,

The drinking skill we turn to art.

To joke and laugh that is our way,

A prank and tease in every day.

Though jokes and fun are good and well,

I have a thing I need to tell.

My stealing Brew, it has been seen,

And rightly judged as cruel and mean.

This deed unneeded and unfair,

For I have plenty in my lair.

Attack of the one lace Shoe (Part 1)

by Mystica (Legionaire – Infantry Regiment)

’t was a cold, dreary night as she walked swiftly along the dimly lit houses at the docks. Hung inside the cowl of her coat, her eyes darted this way and that, for she knew.

Oh yes, she knew…

Earlier that same day

‘This will be the coolest Halloween in the history of men!’ exclaimed Sheli, jumping up and down all excited like a recruit gaining her first stripe.

‘Will you stop bouncing about like that!’ Cadsuane growled, trying to pore a fuming liquid of reddish color into the test tube she was holding with tweezers. ‘If you make me spill this, I’ll box your ears for two months straight and make you sleep with Bob!’. Sheli winced and stopped jumping, though she knew deep inside Caddy wouldn’t go through on her threat. Well, not really anyway. Well, maybe not for two whole months… Frowning, Sheli decided not to test her luck and sat down on the couch, watching Caddy and Leane work on the final stages of the preparation for the prank of the decade.

Sitting at the table to the other side of the room, idly playing with cards without really paying attention to it, Wooly was lost in thought as only he could be. His left leg was dangling off the armrest of his chair, rocking his undone shoe on his toes, which had caught the attention of the house cat tensing like a knocked arrow, ready to be released at the slightest sign of weakness. Spacey and Taymist were canoodling on the lover’s seat, completely unaware of their surroundings and lost in their ‘game for two’. Sheli looked over at them and smiled, wondering what mischief she could get in to with those two that wouldn’t get her in too much trouble. Tapping her lip with one finger, she pondered on it for a while.

A sigh was heard from the platform above their heads, where Vorkia was lecturing Ozzie on the finer points of leadership, trying to force the poor man into a position he clearly did not want to be in, but saw no way of escaping, now that the CG had cornered him.

Schmack! Sheli jumped up out of her pondering at the sound of a whacking against the blackboard that Vorkia was using and looked up. ‘Will you pay attention! This is important stuff!’ V’s voice was heard racking down on Ozzie who simply let out another sigh. Sheli grinned, rubbing her hands together mentally counting her blessings that she had escaped V’s clutches this day.

Turning back to the experiments table, Sheli noticed both Cadsuane and Leane staring at the ground as if frozen.

‘What’s wrong?’ she asked, but the two did not answer or acknowledge her in any way, and kept staring at the ground. ‘hey! What’s wrong??’ Sheli asked more urgently, getting up from her couch and moving towards the table.

Everything happened at once then.

With a loud bang! Leane’s shoe started to fume a sickly greenish smoke and her foot began to thump on the floor, seemingly by it’s own accord. Wooly’s shoe fell off his dangling foot at the sound of the bang, triggering the cat to shoot forward in one straight line towards the shoe, grabbing it by the single lace and shooting through the room straight into Leane’s thumping foot. Cat and shoe continued to rush through the room towards the window, where the cat skidded to a halt, clutching the shoe under her paw and started to bite some holes in the soles.

Sheli stared at Leane’s foot, as did everyone else for that matter, as the shoe vanished and a fluffy teddy bear appeared in its place, with an insane grin on its face, clutching Leane’s foot with both arms.

‘Oh dear’ Cadsuane breathed. ‘Oh Light’ Leane exclaimed at the same time.

The Teddybear started to move. Sheli looked in shock how the bear started to claw at Leane’s leg with razor sharp nails, tearing apart flesh and bone as though moving through butter. All the while chanting ‘I love you to death’ in a grizzly, icky, scratchy voice.

Leane screamed her lungs out, trying frantically to get the bear off her leg, without much success. Cadsuane stood there frozen by shere horror at the sight of this bear tearing Leane apart right in front of her. Wooly, having jumped up from his slumberstate stared in schocked disbelief at the scene while Vorkia and Ozzie poked their heads over the reiling of the platform to see what all the commotion was about. Spacey and Taymist were on their feet, Spacey standing in front of Tay, protecting her against this unknown evil with a grim expression on his face, clearly torn between his oath to protect Tay and his instinct to save Leane.

Infantry Row - October

by Taymist (Der'mandarb - Infantry Regiment)

Greetings and salutations fellow Banders and other DM members. Welcome to the Infantry news desk for October. Another busy month almost over and plenty happening as usual.

The biggest news was, of course, the introduction of a new Command Team with the start of a new Quarter. We issue a warm welcome to the incoming Captain General, Kristine and her Banner Captain, Spacey. Other positions were allocated as follows:-

Footy - Red Arm (Leader)

Kieran - Red Arm

Daetirion - Red Arm

Taymist - Senior RLO

Ashanderai - RLO

and a new Infantry specific post

Duinn - Regimental Competition Co-ordinator.

The 1st of the month also saw two promotions, with Kieran gaining the rank of Lieutenant and Evrem, that of Sergeant. To celebrate in style, Evrem opened a new gambling premises called The Pink Flamingo Lounge. Anyone interested in a good game of poker do please feel free to visit.

Many recruits passed through The Barracks again this month, completing a variety of tasks and the RLO's wish to specifically mention Mystica and K'Jar for completing their Spars successfuly with CG Kristine, a formidable opponent against whom they acquitted themselves well.

Much delight ensued early on over the introduction of a new Infantry Pin. The design and final pin were a combined effort by the CG and BC, intended to display full membership of the regiment. Well done to them, the members are reported to be extremely pleased with them.

Another new member arrived in the ranks this month as Lanette became an Infant having left the Archers. As the resident masseuse for some time at the Three Hammock Inn, her move was a pleasant surprise and a great addition to the Regiment.

The 15th saw a mid month promotion for Evrem to Lieutenant and along with it a poll on his sword naming. Details should be posted soon at the Library on his final choice. This date also saw 4 out of the top 5 points placements going to Infantrymen with Footy in first place, Cam in third behind the MG, Spacey in fourth and Apollo in fifth. Way to go people and congratulations. Great way to demonstrate how hard working the Infantry is.

Sadly this was soon followed by news of Cam's unofficial resignation. As a long time Band member his presence will be missed. Best wishes for the future Cam, in whatever you undertake.

Happier news came around on the 19th with another Banding announcement, this time between BC Spacey and RLO Taymist. The exchange of vows was conducted in a secret ceremony and they were later joined by their other Banded, friends and colleagues for a celebration. They would like to pass on thanks to everyone that attended, for their best wishes and all the lovely presents.

Fun and games continued throughout the month with a major inter regimental brawl. The Cav and Infantry members succeeded in destroying three establishments in one night, visiting the Cavalry's Warhorse Bar and Grill, the Archer's Quivering Arrow Tavern and the Infantry's Kris's Kafe. Much fun was had by all and new establishments were built hastily.

Following that there was a visitation by a Brew Fairy, sporting a fetching green tutu, which forced the production of a Bug Swatter by Cads (Archers). The only information to be had on this incident was that the BC, Spacey, really suits green. It has also been noted that additional pink tutus have recently been added to the BC's wardrobe courtesy of Hallowe'en presents from the Cavalry. The BC himself refrained from issuing a statement on this.

Hallowe'en hijinks have been much to the fore as several visits were paid by the Archers in their aim to decorate the whole Band with ghosts, pumpkins, spiders and various ghoulish entities. The Infantry were highly amused by these antics, putting some of these evil denizens to work in the Hell Fire Forge.

Massive celebrations are also underway as we hit the end of the month with the announcement of not one but two new Infantry members in the form of Mystica and Northie. Welcome to the Infantry, Myst and Northie and good luck. We're delighted to have you with us.

We finish up this month with a couple of important announcements.

Awards - Congratulations to Twinflower (Cavalry), Cadsuane (Archers) and Woolhead (Archers) on their recent Band awards for their hard work and contributions to the RR/RLO programme.

Red Arm Challenges - These have been started up again. Please check out Kieran's post in the Red Arm boards if you'd like to volunteer and sign up.

LOA - Captain General Kristine is on indefinite LOA following the passing of her Grandmother. We're sure the whole Band will join the Infantry in sending her sympathy and condolences at this difficult time. You are in our thoughts Kris and we look forward to your return.

The Game - New fighters are always welcome. Kris, Kie and Tay have now completed their training and participated in some battles, increasing the Infantry members involved. Check out the ongoing fights and give it a go yourself. Cumadrin (Archers and Game Mod) is currently looking for help with moderating these boards, so get your applications in to him if you're interested.

Thank you for joining us for this month's Infantry Row and we'll see you again next month.

The Safety of the Park...

by Mystica (Legionaire – Infantry Regiment)

Last Sunday, I was strolling down the Park, when suddenly three men whooshed past me, chasing this other man.

One of the guys made a jump, landing straight on the runaway's back, pinning him to the ground.

Curious as we women get, I went closer to have a look what was going on and this is what I walked in on...

Needless to say, I didn't stick around for more...

Footnote

by Lanette (Der’mandarb – Infantry Regiment)

Well, what did I say?? It was great, wasn’t it?

But I’m sure you noticed that a regular feature of the Hornsounder was missing. Of course I’m talking about the JotS Contest Winner. Why don’t we have a winner this month? Because there were not contest entries of course! Now I’m sure a lot of you would go “oh, no!!†and gasp and drop your jaws, but facts, my friends, are facts! There were no entries for the JotS Contest last month. None. Zero. Duck’s Egg! Now that is what I call a disgrace!

So for next month I’m leaving the same JotS topic open. For inspiration on creating a verse on that particular topic, you can refer to the article about the Red Ogre featured in the September edition of the Hornsounder.

Also, I had not received the Archery Regiment monthly column by the time I put this newsletter together this month (late as it is!). I hope the Regiment Leaders will make a note of this and that I will not be repeated again. The monthly column is a way for you to show the potential Banders what’s interesting about your Regiment, and I hope you’ll make use of that.

Anyway, as usual my thanks go out to all the authors of the articles featured on this edition of the newsletter. Special thanks to Mystica for helping me out with the Review Polls. *hugs*

So, till we meet next month, au revoir and may peace favor your weapon.

Carai an Shen an Calhar!
