What is "the Voice"?

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Long time lurker, first time poster.

I searched all over this forum to see if this had been addressed, but haven't seen any threads about it.

My question is both simple and direct: as referenced in the prologue of EotW, what is "the Voice"? As in, Lews Therin asks Elan Morin if he has "the Voice", because it will soon be time for "the Singing". If this has been discussed, please point me to the discussion and pardon my ignorance...

My intuition has always told me that it must have something to do with the Tinkers or Ogier Song, but I wanted to get others' opinions as well.

Also, is there anything from either RJ or BS in regard to the Voice?

Thanks for bearing with me...

By inference, the Voice is most likely the name given to the Talent of Singing--i.e. the Talent is called the Voice, the function is called the Singing, which combined with the Aiel's desire to regain the peace and prosperity they knew in the Age of Legends is the basis of the mythology of the Song that has come to exist amongst the Tinkers in the modern age.

Nevertheless, when I try to imagine the songs of the Aiel I always have associations with Gregorian chants like
