Thier technology was well behind modern humans.. But that's cause they were so successful doing that what they did.. It's believed we all descend from as low as 600 breeding individuals due to climate , only the best and brightest survived and we were forced to use every bit of our imagination to survive, which ultimately made us the better species ... It's actually very interesting .. When times were good our technology barely evolved like the Neanderthals

and could go on and post the whole known tool kit and what would that mean?

what do we know of anything biodegradable? how much stone and bone has survived, let alone plant materials, animal skins, furs?

and the command of fire necessary to occupy that niche - that's sophisticated. you don't risk the population on someone letting a "found" fire go out.

we know very little of these people, except that they survived and thrived where we didn't for a hell of a long time.

and when you say behind modern humans, which modern humans are you talking about?

cause we are standing on a pyramid that we didn't build. and couldn't.

but yeah population bottlenecks are interesting, even when they don't stand up to the repeated analysis.

and the mutation of geeks who would go on to develop and populate fan boy websites was as much serendipity as evolutionary leap.

and...

this is a silly argument. :)

By modern human's I'm talking about us, but us from the time when they walked the planet with Neanderthals...

And erectus discovered fire 1.6M years ago. They also had hand axes, which was basically the extent of human technology for over 1 million years. Erectus pre-date heidelbergensis, which is our last common ancestor with Neanderthal. Most of the technology Neanderthals used wasn't much more sophisticated then that. It's Modern humans, homo sapiens, that took the great leap forward on the coasts of africa. Some of this for sure is speculative, and I to have heard some reports to the contrary, but to me it's logical, our species lead directly to their extinction. It's rational to think they couldn't compete with us in some way, and superior tools is likely a large factor in that.

lets see you do this with srones, antler, bone, and leather.

Thanks for the article. And again, my first post was pointing out that Neanderthals had larger brains then we did, I know the idea that they were thoughtless brutes is in fact a myth. I jsut think they were highly specialized, highly successful, and their environment didn't force them to adapt like ours did..

i agree with your first and last posts, and with this statement:

"Some of this for sure is speculative, and I to have heard some reports to the contrary,...."

cause that's really what the deal is.

the logical, rational explanations have changed and changed and changed again, and will continue to do so. there's an awful lot of room for interpretation of some pretty scanty objective evidence. you can even find competing, full color, CGI fluffed, equally compelling documentaries on every issue touched here.

what it comes down to is without a TARDIS, we never gonna know.

but what we do know is that brainz are good.

well yes, but considering we're still here and they aren't that's fairly strong qualitative evidence that we had some advantages over them, logically, technology would be included

we haven't been here very long at all.

and mafia has clearly entered a night phase an you are bored and i am tired and not in the mood to argue.

and one good solar storm and all that technology go bye bye and we be screwed and looking for clubs.

um.

not arguing, way too well medicated.

Not really arguing, have enjoyed the dialogue..

Neanderthals were certainly more successful then us in terms of longevity, that's for sure

yes, me too.

it was a refreshing change from the OP.

just anxious and tired and unequipped do justice to any topic with a mafia maven.

i'll wake up way cranky tho.

and matrim, i didn't mean that the way it sounded. i know you were just trying to start a spammy thread, and fine job, too.

this is reminding me of the beer good episode of buffy...

Someone suggested a book to me called One Second After, have you read it Cindy?
