I could not believe the number of great Science Fiction/Fantasy writers we have lost recently and thought that currently the US postage stamps have been quite lame, there haven't been any really good stamps issued commemorating great people. I can't limit a stamp design to just RJ, but maybe a sheet of such greats like:

I'd like to form a committee of anyone interested in researching and maybe thought someone knew someone who got their stamp idea approved to give a little more insight to the process. I'd like to stimulate ideas and maybe we can get this not only done, but done in other countries for their postage. Feel free to add the others I know I missed as well as their dates of passage. I am sure ideas have already been submitted for Gene Roddenberry and maybe 1-2 others so the more the merrier. Please feel free to add your comments below, your ideas, and your excitement is also welcome!

 

 

I am sending off for literature from the Citizens' Stamp Advisory Committee at the United States Postal Service for the artwork guidelines for artists. There is some confusing information on some sites stating that the anniversary of their birthday or that of their death must be at least 10 years from their death, but from the CSAC page on the actual USPS site itself it does not state this.

 

It is a process of at least 3 years from concept to completion at the USPS, so a start should be made now if the 10 year rule actually applies. If anyone is skilled at artwork that is interested it would make for a more complete proposal. Post away!

I don't think he ever used his real name, it was Reagan O'Neil, Jackson O'Reilly, and Robert Jordan. Later printings of his earlier books announce "Robert Jordan writing as Reagan O'Neil", his Conan books are all RJ as well. I think it is the name he preferred. Other great writers we know as their pen names like Mark Twain, even some SF/F writers.

We might know Mark Twain by a pen name, but when the USPS introduced a stamp honoring him, it referred to Samuel Clemens.
