Moiraine's shadow repellent abilities in EotW

Featured Replies

Re-listening to book 1 again as I go through the series again.

For the most part, it's very impressive how consistent the series is starting from book 1. However, there are a number of things that Moiraine claims to be able to do that don't seem to be consistent.

A couple of times she states that her mere pressence as "someone who can touch the true source" would protect them. In that case, wouldn't Nyneave, Rand, and Egwene also give that protection?

I can understand that she could use wards, but right after that she says that she can't use wards because it would be like a beacon.

Most of this occured at the Queen's Blessing after the group was reunited, but she's said similar through the book.

She can sense shadowspawn. That lends them all a form of protection. Classic Aes Sedai self-presentation.

It's just one of those things.

A similar thing happened with Moiraine saying that healing someone with the OP caused a link between the healer/patient that allowed the healer to locate the person they healed. It was used as a minor plot point in EOTW (Nynaeve tracks down Egwene iirc) then never pops up again in the series.

Maybe, but Nynaeve does seem to have an uncanny ability to know which direction Lan is in before receiving his bond.

I remember Elayne wondering whether that sense was some part of the Seafolk marriage custom...

Perhaps Healing was required for some reason?

Could be, or it could link them somehow in the same way that the ceremony undertaken by Elayne/Aviendha to become first-sisters does. Though if it did so, I would think it would have been more explicitly mentioned.

It's made fairly clear that Nynaeve and Lan don't have that sort of bond. Her knowing which direction Lan went in could be as simple as her being able to read it in his tracks. Nynaeve's dad trained her very well in tracking people.

Pretty much chalk anything Maoiraine says as her projecting the appropriate amount of Aes Sedai mysticism that is supposed to averawe the backwoods hayseeds that she had picked up. To be sure, being told that her mere pressence is enough for protection is not only easier than explaining the intracasies of use of the Power, but also good for the overall morall of the group.

Who was that Aes Sedai that could sense a lot about different packs of Darkhounds? I think it was a Brown ... She seemed skilled.

And it was really a Talent as much as she could tell the different resonances of each pack, each pack having it's own unique resonance.

How did Moiraine lose Lans bond to Nynaeve? Moiraine didn't die...Lan just took off as soon as she went through the ter'angrel.

Which is precisely why everyone thinks that she died. Regardless of the fact that Moiraine was still alive, going through the ter'angreal and it being destroyed severed the bond between Moiraine and Lan. It was then passed to Myrelle automatically (Moiraine had adjusted the bond so that it would do so), because Myrelle has experience in saving the lives of Warders who have been through the death of their Aes Sedai. When Nynaeve finally takes the Oaths on the Oath Rod, she demands Myrelle pass her the bond.

she does that before the oath, and threatens myrelle before she will pass the bond. reminding myrelle that she had not yet held the rod.

You're totally right. Not sure why I'd confused that. She'd passed the test, but hadn't sworn the Oaths yet. Thanks for the correction, Testy. :)
