In The Eye of the World, is Mat remembering the Old Tongue from his own past life or from his ancestors?

 

Good question. He seems to have confirmed Old Blood for the Old Tongue, but the Aemon memory?

 

That's what my belief is, Aemon. Mat Cauthon is the reborn soul of Aemon. Aemon's Old Tongue.

 

It isn't made clear. It could be either. The implication is his bloodline.

 

It quite clearly says the memories could be from either Mat being Aemon reborn or that the memories come from his bloodline.

 

It also quite clearly says "It isn't made clear", which means Brandon doesn't know, which means it probably isn't in RJ's notes. Which means BS is no more an authority on the subject than we are. He's just going from what's in the books.

Isn't made clear in the books is far different from isn't made clear in the notes. Since the question references EotW wouldn't you assume that is what he was referring to? I for one think the clues point to him being a descendent of Aemon. What her certainly was not was the leader of the original band.

To keep this on topic, I believe that Eggy is noone in particular reborn. Just becaue one is important in the second age doesnt mean they are important in any other age, even if similar roles exist.

You can do that with pretty much of any my posts without missing much.
