Felix Baumgartner (born 20 April 1969) is an Austrian skydiver and a BASE jumper. He is renowned for the particularly dangerous nature of the stunts he has performed during his career. Baumgartner spent time in the Austrian military where he practiced parachute jumping, including training to land on small target zones.

Baumgartner's current project is Red Bull Stratos, where he plans to jump to Earth from a helium balloon in the stratosphere in October 2012.

In January 2010, it was reported that Baumgartner was working with a team of scientists and sponsor Red Bull to attempt the highest sky-dive on record.[7] The project, which is scheduled see Baumgartner jump 120,000 ft (36,600 m) from a helium balloon, intends to make him the first parachutist to break the sound barrier. The jump is currently postponed after the scheduled launch on October 9, 2012 was aborted due to "gusty winds". (i was watching this on TV that night)

do you guys think he will succeed?

(is this even a good idea?)

He set the world record for skydiving an estimated 39 kilometres (128,000 ft), reaching an estimated speed of 1,342 kilometres per hour (834 mph), or Mach 1.24, on October 14, 2012. He reached the altitude record for a manned balloon flight,[2] parachute jump from the highest altitude, and greatest free fall velocity.

Riddle me this, Batman: How is he going to break the sound barrier? There is such a thing as terminal velocity.

Other than that though, he should be fine. There's an element of risk in any dive, but it can be minimized by careful equipment inspection and diver competence.

funny thing is maw we spent 2 physics lessons discussing that (the teacher was absent and the substitute didnt really understand much about how we like to learn)

Why? Adrenaline junkie?

why does anyone do anything, because they can, because it's fun. But yeah, I think adrenaline junkie covers a lot of that

Yeah, my physics teacher was talking about that too, he might not make it to terminal velocity.

he does have a parachute

well parachutes can break but he does does have the air to slow him down. I can't believe that makes rational sense in my mind, science is awesome
