Tress (Viola) v. Kate (the shrew)

 

Viola

 

Viola is a gentlewoman from a country called Messaline and also the twin sister of Sebastian. Whether disguised as the young man Cesario or in her true identity as Sebastian's sister, Viola is the central character of the play. Not only does the main plot dilemma hinge upon Viola, she is the only one of the characters (or at least the first) who knows its kinks. In this sense, Viola has greater wisdom than the others do, for she is able to objectively evaluate (most) of the events that take place while others remain in the dark. Resourceful, loving and loyal, Viola is an attractive young woman who is able to do what must be done to survive. Like most of Shakespeare’s heroines, Viola is a tremendously likable figure. She has no serious faults, and we can easily discount the peculiarity of her decision to dress as a man, since it sets the entire plot in motion. She is the character whose love seems the purest.

 

Kate

 

Widely reputed throughout Padua to be a shrew, Katherine is foul-tempered and sharp-tongued at the start of the play. She constantly insults and degrades the men around her, and she is prone to wild displays of anger, during which she may physically attack whomever enrages her. Though most of the play’s characters simply believe Katherine to be inherently ill-tempered, it is certainly plausible to think that her unpleasant behavior stems from unhappiness. She may act like a shrew because she is miserable and desperate. There are many possible sources of Katherine’s unhappiness: she expresses jealousy about her father’s treatment of her sister, but her anxiety may also stem from feelings about her own undesirability, the fear that she may never win a husband, her loathing of the way men treat her, and so on. In short, Katherine feels out of place in her society. Due to her intelligence and independence, she is unwilling to play the role of the maiden daughter. She clearly abhors society’s expectations that she obey her father and show grace and courtesy toward her suitors. At the same time, however, Katherine must see that given the rigidity of her social situation, her only hope to find a secure and happy place in the world lies in finding a husband. These inherently conflicting impulses may lead to her misery and poor temper. A vicious circle ensues: the angrier she becomes, the less likely it seems she will be able to adapt to her prescribed social role; the more alienated she becomes socially, the more her anger grows.

"Kaaa-aaaate!" Viola cried as she wandered through the halls of the Minola estate. "Oh, Kate, where are you? I know I saw you going this way! Are you avoiding me?"

 

She ignored the exasperation in the voice that replied, "Of course I am, you fawning clay-brained harpy!"

 

Viola threw open one of the doors and stepped out into the estate's courtyard, where she found the one she sought. Kate glowered as she demanded "What ever do you want that cannot wait until after I am rid of you?"

 

Viola frowned. "Now, Kate! I was coming to see if you would like to join me at the fountain. The day is so hot, and the water refreshingly cool."

 

"What fountain? We have no fountain." Viola saw Kate roll her eyes, and chose to disregard the scorn.

 

Instead, she grinned mischievously, and gestured to a spot near Kate, where several stone pavers were suddenly tossed up into the air as a geyser of water splashed into Kate's face. "Now you do!"

 

Attack: Fountain of Water

Kate: 100

Tress: 100

The water that hit her was but a few drops... not nearly the force that it appeared to be.

 

Kate laughed mockingly.

 

"Or perhaps I still don't!"

 

Kate continued to cackle.

 

"Now... do continue to enjoy this warm day. I just love the hot summer's touch on my skin!"

Kate: 100

Tress: 100

 

 

(EarthFire... really... someone got lazy naming these weaves. )

"Oh, but you look terribly hot, Kate! Your face is red," Viola cried. "I may be merely a guest in this house, but surely there is something I can do to help you cool down."

 

Kate leaned over the fountain and laughed derisively at the trickle of water that barely bubbled up from it.

 

Viola decided she would try again to pull water from deep within the earth. This time she succeeded.

Bumpety bump, Ladies :)

Kate sputtered as the water rushed over her.

 

Feeling akin to a wet, half-drowned rat, she drew up her own power.

 

The water from the fountain quickly turned to steam before a rush of fire and brimstone burst from its spout.

 

"Well, I suppose you can have this, then!"

 

She piled the fire and stone at Viola.

 

Attack: Earthfire

Damage: 8

 

Kate: 89

Tress: 92

"Oh!" Viola cried. "Kate! You must be careful! I'm not hurt too badly, but that could have been a horrible accident."

 

Viola looked carefully at Kate, who appeared less than concerned about her welfare.

 

"That isn't very nice, Kate. You should be worried about hurting me. After all, I've done nothing but try to help you. I've run errands for you since I arrived at your father's estate, and strained my back carrying all your packages for you when we went to the shops..."

 

Viola rambled on with her tale of carefully crafted guilt-inducing woe, while subtly weaving Water and Spirit to draw forth the desired reaction.

 

There was a rush of satisfaction as tears began to trickle down Kate's face.

"Oh!" Viola cried. "Kate! You must be careful! I'm not hurt too badly, but that could have been a horrible accident."

Kate has left the building. I've checked with the management and he is happy for this Match to end at the last complete Round of attacks. I'm pretty sure that Kate has been swamped with pooter problems and wedding stuff.
