I think Sam Elliot is a pretty over-used comparison to Thom, in my opinion. Though still a lot closer to how I imaging him than every other suggestion I've heard. Thom's a hard pick, I can't exactly name one person who resembles how I imagine him, really.

In fact, I'd love to see a WoT movie where all the actors were casted because they are fugly actors. Just to see all the people who imagine everyone in this series as way too well groomed beautiful people with no imperfections whatsoever. Or at least that's the impression I get from seeing casting threads like this. That'd be funny.

I see Sam Elliott in mask and other films and he is not thom... he is not smart. his voice is not that of a bard. he just has the look. but not the soul or the acting chops.

I think Selleck would make an excellent Bryne, that's actually who I would choose myself.
