Defiance - Season 1

What did you guys think of the series premier?

I thought it started a little slow and was kind of cheesy but the second half picked up and I'm interested to see more.

Is anyone planning on playing the game?

It seemed ok.. I agree it started a little slow.  Enough happened to keep me interested.  I have no plans to play the game.

Yeah it did enough to bring me back for another episode... but the whole "stranger wanders into town and becomes sheriff after saving town" plot is a little played out for me... we'll see if there is enough other story line to steer away from that...

I'm pretty interested in the feud between the two families. I think that is going to drive a lot of tension in future episodes.

Defiance had one of the best opening episodes for a science fiction show in the last few years. I don't plan on playing the game, however, I went to www.defiance.com to learn about the TV show. The back story and description there for the Votan species of people, and the brief history for this future earth all are intriguing to me.

The acting is not bad, but not great, either. The overall plot for the episode and hints on the website for future episodes does bring enough to make me want to see the rest of the episodes of this first season each week.

As long as you watch out for that Scaffolding, you'll have a great time watching it :D.

Actually, I really enjoy it! They still need to refine it a lot, but there are some great elements at play. I am liking the relationship between Amanda and Josh Nolan. The characters of Datak and Stahma Tarr are really cool. Irisa is easily the best character on the show, and they could really take her anywhere with it! I love that father/daughter relationship between her and Nolan as well. They are great together. I really hope that they make her even more central to events.

Rafe and Kenya are horrible characters, and I hope they don't stick around. It seems absolutely pointless for Mia Kirshner to even get top billing. She's a secondary character at best, and not even a good one. Rafe is just too Xenophobic. Every show with aliens needs that type of character, but his personality and mannerisms are driving me nuts. I prefer his son and daughter as characters actually. Having some episodes with Alek and Christie, and the various troubles they face in an inter-species relationship would make for excellent TV.

Besides that, show me more wicked futuristic tech. I want to see more of those sweet Casti daggers, spaceships, weapons, etc. Also, Defiance, (the town), needs an upgrade. I'm not keen on the slum look. I hope they make it look better with time.

There will be a Season 2 for sure though, which I am pretty happy about!

I'm starting to take a liking to it. Still not completely sold but intrigued enough to probably make it to season two.

It completely failed to peak my interest, and I like scifi. Meh. It is about as far from the "next bsg" as possible. just say'n. Bad hype when you can't live up to it.

Someone actually said that it was the next BSG? How embarrassing. I like the show, but it's entertaining, whereas BSG was epic.

The SyFy remake of BSG was a joke.

How so?  Not to start a huge off topic debate, but I quite enjoyed the SyFy version, as I did the original.  I thought it was very well done.

I'm a big proponent of not changing characters, and Starbuck is not a girl. It's a matter of principle more than anything. Also maybe it was just the promos but it seemed like the show turned into a soap opera and that's not what I thought the show should be (again that may be a false assumption from the promos, because I never watched the show). That' also one of the reasons I won't watch the american Sherlock Holmes drama/mystery ( the name of the show escapes me at the moment), also I think the guy who plays sherlock is murdering the role.

Heh, I can't disagree. I think it's pretty crap BSG--but if you ignore the fact that BSG was supposed to be BSG, it's great. If that makes sense. The show only marginally gained from the original IP.

Either way, Defiance doesn't measure up for me. It doesn't do anything particularly well.

I think the character design and makeup is actually pretty decent tbh.

Not even sure if I really have to say anything here.

BSG was a "re-imagined series", not a true re-make.

Defiance still has some work, that's for sure. I think they came up with one hell of a good idea though. It's just going to be capitalising on that idea and the universe they have created that will be the "make it or break it" for them. Renewed for a second season already though, and broke SyFy records for the highest viewership of a pilot episode, (Eureka being the previous), so they're obviously doing something right.

That's my problem, if you want to do something original, then do something original. Don't mess with a classic. Shows a lack of imagination.

And like SD said the video game probably really boosted the ratings, so good idea on their part.

The show, and video game was a collaboration between SyFy and Trion. Been in the works for at least the last 3 or 4 years.

Supposedly, there is going to be tie-ins, from the game, and the show. Events that happen in the show, happen in the game, and vice-versa. (aka, some events, with players choosing the outcome, might get reflected in the show. As well players getting into put into the show.

I'll be watching episode 5 shortly - but for the premiere - there was way too much going on and the plot convoluted because there was too much to follow.

Subsequent episodes have been fine

If someone had told me Grant Bowler & Julie Benz were in it, not to mention co-created by Rockne S. O'Bannon (of Farscape) I'd have been here sooner
