TV show of the month: Dresden Files (premieres 1-21-07)

I have been hyping this for like months now and the show premieres very soon. I am going to go over some details about this show and hopefully get a few more of you excited about it. Please give it a watch and post your reviews back here.

Premiere: 1-21-07, 9pm est, before new BSG on Sci-Fi

Website: http://www.scifi.com/dresden/index.html

Synopsis: Based on Jim Butcher's best-selling novels, The Dresden Files tells the story of Harry Dresden (Paul Blackthorne), a regular-guy private detective with extraordinary abilities. While most people see assaults, kidnappings or murders as the work of people with a depraved indifference for human pain, Harry is as likely as not to see the work of supernatural villains.

That's because he's a wizard. The real thing (and the only one listed in the Chicago phone directory). Whether consulting for the police on seemingly inexplicable crimes or following his own cases, he battles dark forces with a wry sense of humor.

The story begins when local gangster Tommy Tom and his girlfriend Jennifer Randall are found dead in a hotel room, their hearts having literally exploded from their chests. There's no natural explanation for the gruesome scene — no forced entry, no sign of struggle and no evidence that the two organs had become fatally claustrophobic. So police Lt. Connie Murphy turns to Harry Dresden, wizard.

Sounds interesting. I'll give it a look, but I think I have to start deleting some stuff from my hard drive first.

I LOVE the books and suggest them to anyone that needs a new series to read. I think I read the series (so far 7 books) in like a month because I couldn't put them down.

  • 2 weeks later...

A little disappointed in the premiere. Mainly the changes from the book are going to take some getting used to. Murphy has a kid, Bob the skull is not really a skull (I kind of like this though), and their are new characters I do not know.

I think the show will get better as they build some background.

If anyone else watched the show, please commment and let me know what you thought.

I liked it, though it would have been nice to have a bit more background. I think if I had read the books it would have been much better. But overall it was entertaining, and I expect good things from the series as a whole. As the story plays out I think I'll get the background I want.

Either way, this is one I'm going to keep up with.

By the way, I really like that new sig you have. :)

I too was a little disappointed with it. But I think I will be able to like it as long as I bear in mind that the TV show has nothing to do with the books. Excepting the mere coincidence that everyone has the same names of course....

Kathana made me go smaller. So I had the fiance make me up something that was within specs.

I also liked how Justen is his Uncle.... of course in the books Justen is dead and is the person that taught him magic.

Orignally Sci-Fi was going to a 2 hour premiere based on the book Storm Front, but they are going to use the book as an arc and cover it in episode 5.

I really stand behind the books. I was introduced to them last year and found them to be the best series I read since Martin's ASOIAF.

*Quickly jots down books she should apparently be reading*

They alluded to Justen (sp?) being dead, and mentioned more than once that Harry killed him... I believe the exact phrase used was "self defenced him to death". Yet he was outside walking at the end of the show... that should be an interesting story.

I'm not sure if I like it yet. See, I wanted Harry to be crustier.

In the book you're introduced to Harry with him being snarky about stuff, and then a superbrutal murder that makes him throw up. I was expecting the series to be darker... but maybe they don't want to just jump in with darkness, and it is scifi, not HBO I suppose. I miss Bob being the skull, I was looking forward to seeing how they managed it.

yup. that was the problem though, not really dark enough... more afternoon drama (ie. Charmed), than adult (ie. Carnivale). It could change, and I will give it some time to grow on me...

Going into this show with no preconceived notions or prior knowledge of it other than what I've read on this forum whatsoever, I have to say that it was ... okish.

Some of the dialogue made us burst out laughing, but not really in a good way.

Maybe it was because we were watching it with my parents and my mom, at least, is NOT a sci-fi/fantasy fan?

I felt similarly, some of the writing was supercheezy... and while in the books there are cheezy moments, Dresden's supersnark can carry it off.

Halfway through the second book and yes, the books are FAR better than the series thus far. I don't think they're the best novels I have everevereverread, but the world is interesting and the characters are entertaining. They move at a good pace and you get through them quickly. Though they're a series I am not worried about lag time in between new books (unlike WoT) because they stand alone pretty well thus far and it's easy to pick up where you left off.

The books only get better I think. It is a special thing when a series gets better as you read on, instead of say.... WoT.

I am going to watch this season only out of loyalty to the books. If this season fails to get better it will come off my must watch list.

plus! I miss the duster and sweatpants with cowboy boots combo :)

yeah!! I loved the fact he was so completely unstyley in the books! :) It's a good visual :)

I figured they would lose Mister but damn I love the interaction between the two.

And Bob is not as funny without his desire for all things sexual.

I agree, why lose the duster? Also his mom gave him a pendant, not a shield bracelet.

And the biggest one of all.. where is the blue beetle!!!

Well, I watched the Heroes repeat Friday evening on Sci-FI, and they had an encore presentation of this on right after it, so I went ahead and watched the pilot.

It wasn't bad. Bear in mind I'd never heard of the books outside of the forum much less read them so I am unbiased as far as that goes.

Personally I saw it as a poor man's version of Supernatural. It was very similar, except not as cool and not as scary. It seemed to be sticking closer to the fantasy genre, whereas Supernatural is horror.

I can also see it as being a tiny bit of a Buffy copy.. the first season of Buffy anyway (I've only seen the first seaon of it).

I didn't watch the new episode last night, but I might tape the repeat on Tuesday night...

I plan to watch Dresden tonight and will post my thoughts on it later. I am also scared to check the BSG thread until I watch that tonight too. I also have heroes... wow... my night is full.

yeah, watch then read the BSG one, I went spoilery.

(what? It was on at midnight so I watched and THEN went to bed! not all of us have fancy schmancy dvr technology!)

I feel like Buffy's first season was rather shaky as well, and then went up from there, which is why I am willing to keep watching. One thing that I like about the books is that they get really intense and you think "how is it possible for him to get out of this one alive!" The pilot TOTALLY didn't have that feeling to it. I understand not really being able to do that every episode, but that's where building a multi-episode plot-arc comes in.

Ok very much improved over the 'pilot' episode. Dresden was more how I imagined him from the books and not so... boring. I am hoping the first episode was there low point and the rest just keep getting better.

I taped the repeat on Tuesday night, but I haven't got around to watching it yet. I also taped the Heroes marathon on SciFi last night so I could watch the first two episodes (9-Homecomeing, and 10-Six Months Earlier) which I haven't seen yet. Now if they will have a marathon where I can see the first eight episodes...

I'll have to get around to watching all that.. maybe over the weekend.

I agree with Empy, this Dresden was WAY better. It still has much improving to do, but for some reason, well, this was just better.

I still wish he had a cat though.

And lived in a cold dank basement with no electricity and cold showers.

I agree with Empy' date=' this Dresden was WAY better. It still has much improving to do, but for some reason, well, this was just better.

Definitely better. This one had less Buffy-like monsters and felt more like an adult drama than something aimed at teens. Dresden seemed a bit more sarcastic and dark, maybe because he wasn't being a nice guy and charitably helping out a cut kid or something... I'll tune in for the next one on the strength of this, which I probably wouldn't have if it hadn't have improved.

Dresden continues to improve. Last night had some of the characteristics of Book 2 in the series (Fool Moon). Yveva and I knew right away the FBI lady was a wolfie. It is too bad they did not bring in Billy and the gang as this would have been a good point to introduce them.
