Judge Vetoes Baby's Name

yes, mills, that's what I mean.

no, ryrin, perhaps it isn't though I'm not entirely sure about that. but the majority of this stuff appears aimed at keeping things static and in the US a lot of the disdain for unique names appears at least partly a disdain for the perceived cultural populations that dont conform to the "norm."

interesting - a French judge previously refused to allow parents to name a child strawberry.

that's a more intrusive government than I want.

on the subject, a cute article with a long list of food inspired names. some

you probably have heard and not even thought of the origin. others seem odd to me but I suppose Adam

seemed odd in its day.

I must confess to picking two very simple names for my boys so they didn't have to deal with creative spelling - or having to spell their name to someone every time they gave it.

I've had to explain Cindy not Cynthia my whole life. it's a pain but meh. lots of people hate their names. I tried to keep it simple for the cats but my sister went with 3 first names for my niece and that's ok too. until she tries to fit it on a license.

Way too harsh imo.  People should be able to give their children dumb names if they want.  It's stupid and might cause trouble for the kid, but so are plenty of other parenting decisions that the state has no interest interfering in.  And this one wasn't even that bad.  Not only is Nutella delicious, but odds are she would've ended up adopting Ella as a nickname anyways.  No need for the state to step in there imo.
