Here's my 12th century bliaut that I'm almost finished with!

So, here's my little tutorial on how i make Vinking age round shield, about 31.5 inches in diameter. 

 

First, you take all the pallets apart so you have boards

 

 

Then, you glue 2 boards to a larger one so you can draw a circle

 

 

then, you make a rough design for the handles

 

 

you cut out a round shape from the glued boards, and attach the handle to see if it works (size for the hand large enough etc)

 

 

Then, you look into covering the grip with either fabric or leather

 

 

and you cover the shield in cloth (i used old bedsheets, once painted, no diffirence can be seen)

 

 

Add rawhide strips and a design to your liking, and your shield will look like this:

before the end of the month, i think i'll have finished another 10 shields. 8 large, 2 small.

Thanks! They were a lot of fun. Painting and singing are two of my favorite activities (medieval and otherwise). 

once i get rid of my shoulder and knee infection, i'll finish a dozen viking shields, diffirent sizes, diffirent types of construction

i will, once i am doing better and don't have to take my medication anymore. Multiple muscle infections (shoulders, knee) have me on heavy drugs, and it would be unwise for me to use powertools. Typing, already, is a challenge
