I have another Admin interview for you this week. This time, I got to chat with Taymist, the Admin in charge of our DR PSW role play boards.

Q: When did you start reading The Wheel of Time?

A: I started reading the series in the early 90's when I was at university, around '91. Someone had given me book tokens as a birthday present, I bought The Eye of the World, and the rest is history.

Q: How did you find Dragonmount and get involved with the Admin/staff?

A: Wow, that's rather a long process. I'll try to condense it lol. I was a member of an online book club back in 2006. Someone there mentioned WoT related sites which had me following a series of links out of sheer curiosity. I ended up at Dragonmount an hour or so later and immediately registered. I then spent some time on the general boards, eventually taking the plunge into the Social Groups by joining the Wolfkin. I hadn't been there very long when I met Goldeneyes, and through him met Twinflower and Auld Manriva. They jointly kidnapped me and carried me off to the Band of the Red Hand Social Group. That was what really hooked me and where my Staff involvement began.

By early 2007, I was involved with all but a couple of the Social Groups and held Staff positions in all of them, most notably as Corki's second in command at the Band. I was always a sucker for punishment though and I plucked up the courage to join the PSW too, thanks to Winter Mist. I started to role play as a Wolfkin and was very quickly offered the position of Division Leader for the Wolfkin by the then RP Admin, Whitewolf. From there, it was a short jump to becoming Assistant Admin and, much to my dismay, an even shorter one to taking over the reins entirely. Being so busy, I gradually divested myself of the majority of my Social Group involvement and focused on the PSW.

Q: Can you share a bit about yourself?

A: I'm an English language/literature graduate. I've been an avid reader all my life and only became an equally avid computer user within the last 11 years or so. I recently became a Grandmother for the first time and I'll be turning 40 in November. It's hard to believe that I've been reading one series of books for 20 of those years. My other hobbies were rather shoved aside when I discovered the seemingly infinite world of the internet but when I'm offline I like cross stitching, paper crafts and genealogy and when I'm online, I play Runescape and have a dreadful addiction to social media. I also have two insane cats, a Maine Coon and a Scottish Wildcat, both of whom I adore.

Q: You are in charge of the DR PSW role play boards. What is that like?

A: Rewarding and frustrating in equal measure. Rewarding to watch the relationships that grow through writing, both in and out of character, and also to see people develop their techniques as writers. When you follow the actual story arcs that members write, you can see them becoming more confident in their craft, particularly those who arrive with very basic skills. I think our members who have English as their second language are especially awesome. I couldn't write as fluently as they do if I had to write in another language, that's for sure.

On the other hand it can be very frustrating in trying to keep activity going. People often fit their writing in between their offline commitments and their other interests. Writing is fairly time consuming which means that RP threads can get delayed or indefinitely stalled when people's lives get hectic. We also tend to have people joining out of curiosity and when they discover it takes a fair amount of commitment, that can be off putting and they don't stay. Unfortunately, although these things may only apply to one individual, their actions, or lack of action, has a knock on effect for every other person they were writing alongside.

Overall, though, it's a fun position to be in 95% of the time and when it gets rough, I have a great team of Staff to back me up and help out.

Q: What are your favorite RP threads?

A: The main plotline threads are always entertaining, but I actually enjoy those which give insight into individual characters and their lives far more than those directly related to the book events.

"Through the Fire and the Flame", a solo RP written by Quibby, is at the top of my favourites list, closely followed by "A time to hunt...again.", written by Rasheta, Rekinu, and Arinth.

Q: Do you actively RP?

A: Yes, I have 3 active characters in the PSW at present. A Wolfkin, an Accepted in the White Tower, and a Band recruit. There's also a 4th in the works who will hopefully be in The Kin.

Q: What faction would you join in Randland if you had to choose only one?

A: I'd be Wolfkin, just like Perrin. Joining the Wolfkin first out of all the Social Groups and then out of all the RP Groups may have given that away lol.

Q: Who is your favorite character in The Wheel of Time?

A: I have a tough time choosing just one. It'd have to be a tie between Aviendha and Verin, both of whom I've loved reading about through the entire series.

Q: What is the most memorable moment for you in The Wheel of Time?

A: It's most definitely Nynaeve's ride to raise support for Lan as he rides for Tarwin's Gap. The way she dumped him in Saldaea, in a typically Aes Sedai fashion, made me laugh, and the heartfelt response of his countrymen when she "requested" their support made me cry. Any scene that raises such emotion in the reader is epic in my opinion.

Q: Is there anything else you'd like to share?

A: Simply this. Being a member of Dragonmount will open up a multitude of possibilities and opportunities for anyone willing to put into the experience as much as they take out. Make the most of it, have fun, and cherish the friendships you will unavoidably make.

Welcome back to "WoT If?". This will be a continuation of theories regarding who will survive, or not survive, the Last Battle. We will be looking at Perrin and Faile. As always:

Spoiler warning! This will include content from many books in the series, including Towers of Midnight, and speculation about A Memory of Light. Please read at your own risk.

Also, this WILL NOT contain spoilers from A Memory of Light's Prologue, Chapter 1, Chapter 2, or Chapter 11. Please refrain from posting any spoilers from A Memory of Light in the comments section. The A Memory of Light spoiler discussion board can be found here.

There are a lot of fans who got…impatient…with Perrin and Faile's plotlines from Winter's Heart and all the way to Knife of Dreams. Because of this, there is some resentment towards the two, and many hope one or the other will die in the Last Battle. So, we'll look at evidence on both sides and see where their fate may lie.

First, let's look at Perrin. He's important, one of the three ta'veren necessary to ensure victory at Tarmon Gai'don. It's stated several places that he and Mat are both needed to give aid to Rand. Last week's post talked about this a bit, so I won't go into detail about the possible roles Perrin will have. Suffice to say, he has to be there. And if he's taking part in the battle, there is a chance he won't survive.

However, it's pretty simple to determine that Perrin will survive. In The Eye of the World, Min had a viewing about him:

Tenobia, Shield of the North and Sword of the Blightborder, is the current bearer of the Broken Crown, but there's foreshadowing that she might die during the Last Battle (Towers of Midnight, Chapter 51, "A Testing"), or at least before producing an heir (Path of Daggers, Prologue). Because of this, Davram Bashere will succeed her to the throne of Saldaea. And, as there's foreshadowing that Bashere will die during the Last Battle (Crossroads of Twilight, Chapter 24, "A Strengthening Storm"), his heir, Faile, will inherit. Saldaea might be a nation in which an outlander married to the ruler becomes equal—that is, Faile would be Queen, but Perrin could be King—so Perrin would be the wearer of the Broken Crown.

If Tenobia and Bashere die during the Last Battle, Perrin must survive it in order to receive the Broken Crown. I doubt he would be considered the King of Saldaea the exact moment the current ruler dies, so there must be a coronation, and that would certainly take place after the Last Battle.

There are a few other things to mention about Perrin. He's got a Power-wrought hammer that's going to come in handy during the Last Battle. I don't think it will make him invincible, but it did do more damage to Trollocs than a normal hammer would (Towers of Midnight, Chapter 41, "An Unexpected Ally"). He's also a very skilled Dreamwalker, so if the Battle does go into Tel'aran'rhiod, as many people believe, he will be almost invincible there, too.

My last piece of evidence might be a bit of a stretch, but I'll bring it up, just in case. When Perrin and Elayne speak of Perrin's "rebellion," they reach an agreement, naming him Steward of the Two Rivers, and saying they will encourage their children to wed (Towers of Midnight, Chapter 47, "A Teaching Chamber"). In Aviendha's second trip through the glass-column ter'angreal, she sees her grandchild, Oncala, and Elayne's grandchild, Talana. If Perrin's and Elayne's children marry, Talana could be Perrin's grandchild as well. I think that would explain the "not very pretty, but very regal" (Towers of Midnight, Chapter 49, "Court of the Sun") comment by Oncala. The mix of Two Rivers blood and Saldaean blood in one of Talana's parents, and Aiel and Andoran in the other, will probably equal something that's not very pretty.

So, Perrin must survive to get the Broken Crown and to father the child who becomes the parent of Talana.

Now, let's discuss Faile. I think most of the same arguments hold for her as for Perrin, especially the part about him fathering a child. But she will also need to be alive for him to take the Broken Crown. I think they'll have to be crowned together. However, this might be a point against her surviving. Perhaps that is why Perrin has the Broken Crown, not because they are equal rulers, but because Faile has died, leaving him to rule Saldaea alone. There is the chance that simply being her husband gives him the right even if she dies, too.

Another point for her survival: I don't think Faile will be doing much fighting during the Last Battle. Perrin has finally learned Saldaean ways, and he's become more comfortable with proving he's "stronger" than her. He'll tell her she can't fight, and she won't.

On top of that, we had three books worth of plotlines in which Faile's life was in danger. One thing I've learned from literature is authors don't repeat plotlines with the same characters. Even looking at the three times Rand fought Ba'alzamon, each scene was different: the first time, Rand simply cut the black cord; the second, Rand and Ba'alzamon dueled with swords in Falme; and the third, they fought with the One Power. So, even though the theme is the same, the execution is different. Faile spent so much time with a vague sense of danger that I don't believe she will face too much in the Last Battle.

I think that is sufficient proof for Perrin's survival, and just enough that I will say Faile will live too. With the quickly approaching arrival of A Memory of Light, I'll try to squeeze in a few more of these predictions. Next week, we'll examine the Royal Line of Andor—everyone from Elayne to Galad—and see if they're likely to live or die. Thanks for reading.

The world of the Wheel is as much defined by objects, symbols, and clothing as it is by characters. Unfortunately for you all, I'm a pretty poor craftsman. This inability to create decent crafts has convinced me that I probably can't tell good crafts from bad crafts, and that I probably shouldn't try. So, I've been avoiding them.

This week, I hope to fix that. My goal today is to show the best of the best--craftsmanship so lovely that even I couldn't mistake it for anything other than the product of exceptional talent and painstaking effort.

The first half of the post is dedicated to objects and depictions of objects, while the second half is dedicated to cosplay and costuming. (I know, I know, depictions of objects are really works of art, not craft, and cosplay really deserves its own week. The theme today is a little tangled. Somehow, I think we'll muddle through.)

This is a stock image. To the best of my knowledge, this means it was created as a reference for other digital artists, traditional artists, and photomanipulators. I think it stands beautifully on its own. (I don't recognize the flag. I think this was inspired by The Wheel of Time, rather than directly adapted from it.)

A rare combination (for The Wheel of Time, at least) of beautiful cosplay and beautiful photography.

Star Wars meets WoT by ~more2lookfwd2 (Alex Molk)

Okay, I admit it. I'm not sharing this one because the costuming is awesome, even though it is, and I'm not sharing it just because it's a fun crossover. I'm sharing it because this guy looks exactly like the version of Mat in my head. Maybe it's because of his resemblance to versions of Mat drawn by ~Forbis and ~solitarium, which for me have always defined the character. What do you think?

Lanfear: Look to the Stars by ~TnSabregirl

Not being a cosplayer myself, I have not to date paid nearly enough attention to ~TnSabregirl's beautiful costumery. This dress is my favorite of her Wheel of Time costumes. The detail is just incredible.

Have you ever wished you could travel through time, or change events that have happened in the past? I know I have, even as recently as the past week.

There may be spoilers for those who are interested in this, but I attempted to keep them vague.

Steins;Gate is an anime about time travel and changing the past. It follows the character Okabe Rintarō, who calls himself Hōōin Kyōma, as he tries to solve the mysteries of time travel. Due to an unfortunate incident, the effects of fiddling with time start to unravel the future. Along the way, Okabe gets more and more people to join his lab, and they start to bond, so everything seems to be going well. However, just when things are looking up for the Future Gadget Laboratory, things start to go horribly wrong. Okabe then refuses to accept things the way they are, so he tries to affect time even more to fix it. They begin to realize that the more they try to change the things that were originally supposed to happen, the worse things got. To fix everything, he had to ask people to give up the things they got in order to fix the bigger picture.

Well, that's about it. I would like to conclude by saying that the more we dwell on our pasts, the more we lose our futures. I hope that line will be of help to some of you.

Welcome back to "WoT If?", Dragonmount's theory blog, and sorry for the delay. Since you've all been waiting, no doubt, with bated breath, let's jump right into today's topic: the three ta'veren, their connection to one another, and their purpose in the Last Battle.

We know the fact that there are three ta'veren is significant. I think it shows that the Shadow is really strong and poised for victory during this Age. That is why the Wheel spun out the three together, to balance the evils within the world. And there are many threads connecting Rand, Mat, and Perrin together. They feel each others' need, they are able to see the others through an outside source with the swirling colors, and they have a similar sense of duty, knowing they must all be together during Tarmon Gai'don.

For the longest time, I've held the belief that Mat and Perrin would accompany Rand to Shayol Ghul, down into the mountain itself. There are a few pieces of evidence that support this theory, so I'll point them out quickly. First, three ta'veren together have more power than they do separately. Moiraine mentions this a couple of times in The Eye of the World. In this scene, she's speaking with Lord Agelmar, emphasizing why Rand, Mat, and Perrin must go to the Eye.

If three ta'veren can affect the Pattern around the Eye, and maybe weave the Dark One out, surely there's a greater chance of that if all three go to the Pit of Doom.

Another reason I think this is possible is because Mat and Perrin already have their functions for the Last Battle, and it will mirror their functions during the battle against the Seanchan in Falme. Mat and Perrin both fought, but not to the extent of being battle leaders. Mat sounded the Horn, Perrin held the Dragon Banner. During the Last Battle, they should have the same roles.

Naturally, there is some counter evidence to this too. The most obvious is the cover for A Memory of Light, which features Rand with Moiraine and Nynaeve going down into the Dark One's Bore. Of course, Mat and Perrin could be coming in right behind them.

Mat's battle reputation has increased significantly since Falme, so it may seem like a loss to the Light side if Mat doesn't help lead the battle. But there are still four of the Great Captains alive, plus Lan and the great Aiel leaders, and possibly even the Seanchan leaders—since all of them are considered to be like the Great Captains (Crossroads of Twilight, Chapter 23, "Ornaments"). I don't think Mat's presence would be missed too much.

If it's not possible for Mat and Perrin to be there physically, let's look at this from a different angle. Maybe their pull on each other is what the colored swirls are all about. I looked through the interview pages, and all major questions in regards to the colors was met with a RAFO. Brandon Sanderson answered one: that the colors can't be seen in Tel'aran'rhiod, or in the land of the Finns.

We know very little about this part of their connection, only that it increases as the books progress and now they can actually see what the others are doing. Maybe this will be how they stay together, through their ta'veren link. If Mat and Perrin do stay outside, they could go into a trance, being connected with Rand, though not actually inside the Bore with him.

And what of them seeing each other? This is such a strange aspect of their abilities. As I mentioned earlier, when the colors swirl, they see the others through an outside source—not from the others' eyes, or even from another person in the room. It's like an out-of-body experience; they float in the space in front of the others. Whose eyes are they seeing through? Is it the Pattern that picks a spot from which to see? Is the Pattern that all-encompassing? The Pattern, the fabric of reality, should have access to every aspect within the world, right?

Let's look at the first time Mat actually sees an image with the colors:

And here's a more recent one, from when Tam tells Perrin he needs to go with the Aes Sedai:

This implies that Perrin's vision is moving with Rand, like a tracking shot. Most of the time, they dismiss the images, making them go away. If they didn't, would they stay connected for longer lengths of time?

It's been answered by Robert Jordan that souls cannot be split, so the out-of-body experiences they are having doesn't suggest that they are part of the same soul, able to view another third of their body.

But I'm sure the swirls of colors is the key in some way to the Light's triumph over the Shadow. Perhaps that's the true meaning of the prophecy, "the three shall be as one" (The Gathering Storm, Chapter 48, "Reading the Commentary").

That's all for this edition. Join me next week for an examination of whether Perrin and Faile will survive the Last Battle. Thanks for reading!

I'm not very good at hiding my inner fantasy geek, but I haven't yet felt the overwhelming urge to permanently ink my skin with a declaration of my undying love for Mat Cauthon or The Wheel of Time. That's not to say I haven't thought about it. Probably the only thing saving me from just such an uncontrollable urge in the future is the fact that I've sworn off getting any more tattoos. (Three and a half hours of tattoo-machine-on-spine was my lifetime pain limit. I've had more fun skiing on a bone fracture.)

Even though I won't be getting any more tattoos, I still love looking at them. Luckily, there are some amazing Wheel of Time tattoos out there. Here are some of my favorites.

Unless I use full names below, I'm using Dragonmount handles. Also, there's a whole Dragonmount forum thread on this here. Jenn dedicated an old Fan Art Friday to this, too.

Marcus Allen Adams has a lot of Wheel of Time tattoos! The Andoran lion in the bottom right corner is a work in progress.

flafro got this amazing half sleeve tattoo done a while back...

...which inspired Bandenjamin to get this half sleeve.
(These are my favorites. I'm not ashamed to admit I'm staggered by the sheer awesomeness of flafro's and Bandenjamin's arms.)

FizzLiz posted this insanely adorable picture in the forums of her husband holding their baby girl Nynaeve.

Continuing the half sleeve theme, we've got Windstrider's awesome wheel-and-serpent tattoo...

...and a work in progress that Plazmuh is getting (has gotten? I'd love to see an update!)

In true Wheel of Time spirit, kanekaspar got this tattoo of a dragon wrapped around his forearm.

Emma Wardle got this along her ribs. I love the design and am in awe of her pain tolerance.

And these guys (C. Charles Lovat-Fraser on the left and Mark Johnston on the right) just made me laugh. Their tattoos are cool, too.

Last but not least, here's Dragonmount's illustrious founder, Jason Denzel, with his amazing dragon tattoo.

I have another Admin interview for you. These kind of got sidetracked due to unforeseen circumstances. I have an interview with one of our Role Play (RP) Admins, Winterwinds. He is in charge of the RP Groups.

Q: When did you start reading The Wheel of Time?

A: I started reading The Wheel of Time back in middle school, so around 6th or 7th grade, I borrowed The Eye of the World from my school's library. The rest, as they say, is history.

Q: How did you find Dragonmount and get involved with Admin/Staff?

A: Well, I was made staff actually shortly after I joined Dragonmount. Barm noticed I was greeting everyone, and actually outgreeting the newbie mods, so he offered me a job! That went on for a few years, then Tay approached me to be her 2nd in command.

Q: You are in charge of the RP Groups. How do you balance everything between the groups?

A: Well, for the most part I just try to keep a clear and level head, try and be as fair as I can towards all the RP Groups.

Q: What are your favorite RP threads?

A: Most of my favorite RP threads have been over in the Wolfkin or in the Rev. One board. For instance, I started a thread a long time ago, of which I cannot remember the name but it was nominated for an Empy, which was set in the War of Power.

Q: Do you actively RP?

A: Not as much as I want to here, but elsewhere I am quite an active RPer. My lack of RP here stems from the Wolfkin having just flopped over and gone into hibernation mode.

Q: What faction would you join in Randland if you had to choose only one?

A: Wolfkin, without a shadow of a doubt.

Q: Who is your favorite character in The Wheel of Time?

A: Oddly enough, Mat. I am a big RTS player, and Mat's general abilities have always been something I looked up to.

Q: What is the most memorable moment for you in The Wheel of Time?

A: In the book just before the last book, Towers of Midnight I think, there was a scene where Perrin and Elayne's brother, who is the Lord Captain Commander of the Whitecloaks, find common ground after Perrin saves a Whitecloak who had been accidentally stuffed into a pile of the dead. I just loved how two former foes could find common ground and put aside their differences like that.

Q: Is there anything else you'd like to share?

A: Um, well, I guess the only thing I would like to share is that I hope some more people decide to wander down to the RP side and say hello, and perhaps stick around or RP in the Rev. One board. It's a fun place to be and we are always welcoming to newcomers.

This giveaway's question is: What would you do if you found yourself in Tel'aran'rhiod for the night? You have until Wednesday, November 14th to answer in the comments section. Good luck!

Alright, folks, I'd like to thank you for coming to the Friends of the Dark Local 328 Annual Picnic. If I could have your attention, I've got some quick announcements to pass on and then we can get back to the barbecue and games.

First off, I'd like to remind you that while it's a lot of fun to mess with each other, I must ask you to stop with the pranks. Hiding a corpse in the houses of fellow cell members is well and good, but once you start drawing the Dragon's Fang on each other's doors, people are going to start asking questions, and to be honest, that's counterproductive. If you're going to have a laugh, either have it at the expense of someone who isn't a contributing member or make it subtle.

Next up, on the topic of officially sanctioned masks...

Our identities are important to each of us as a way to make sure that we, as a family, are not compromised. To that end, we've long had the practice of wearing masks to these gatherings to protect ourselves. I feel I must point out once more that the list of approved materials for construction of these masks as listed under subsection 12, paragraph 7 does not include items such as lacy underwear, must consist of more than just fake spectacles and a moustache, and should not be made to look like any other person. Remember, folks, it's been 48 days since the last hanging of someone who was actually a Friend of the Dark, so let us please keep those villagers guessing.

Also on the agenda are a few notes about our dear friends, the Trollocs.

Please keep in mind while visiting Shayol Ghul on vacation to NOT, I repeat NOT taunt the Trollocs. Only Aginor knows what he bred them with to get their sense of humor, but I feel that after last month's massacre of the holiday tour group, this point cannot be stressed enough. Also, if invited over for a feast, here are two things to remember. First, make sure you know exactly what is in the bowl they are offering you for dinner and, in my opinion, it may be wise to just stick with the salad. Second, make sure you are not intended to be the main course.

Finally, and perhaps most importantly, I'd like to mention that we're undergoing a change in management. Recently the Chosen have come out of where they were locked away and have stepped up to take charge in the fight against the Light once more. Now, as of right now, they're allowing us to generally carry on as we have been, but remember your oaths. If one of them approaches you for assistance with a plot, show them the selfless pride and intelligence we're known for.

I'd also like to point out at this time that the one change they have made is to the punishment bylaws. Whereas previously, it went from a verbal warning for a first failure to a written warning for the second and so on, the bylaws now read: "First Failure: Death. Second Failure: Permanent Death." Although, of course, in their wisdom and mercy the Chosen may simply change the sentence to a lifetime of insufferable pain and then death, as they see fit. Our motto has therefore been changed as well, from "Death Before Failure" to simply "Death For Failure." Do, uh, keep that in mind.

That concludes my announcements. The barbecue is in the back. We'll be playing "Pin the murders on the Aes Sedai" a little later, and don't forget to grab a favor bag on the way home. Have a wonderful time, everybody.

The Aiel Social Group would like to know what has left its mark on you. What person, thing, or experience has left a positive mark on your life?

The Band of the Red Hand Social Group just posted their monthly Regimental Book Discussion. This month, they are wondering when Mat became "great" in the Wheel of Time series. When did he grow from being a simple farm boy or sidekick to being a full-fledged hero?

Our fearless leader, Jason Denzel, has been making us jealous this weekend. He's been hobnobbing with Brandon Sanderson and Patrick Rothfuss at the World Fantasy convention in Toronto. Check out our Twitter or Facebook pages for more on this.

Welcome back to "WoT If?", Dragonmount's weekly theory blog. With the release of A Memory of Light quickly approaching, I thought it would be interesting to take a look at whether some characters will survive or perish during the Last Battle. We'll take just a few people at a time and look at foreshadowing, among other things, that point to life or death after the series.

A few weeks ago, we touched upon the subject of Birgitte, but only in regards to her connection to the Horn. I'd like to expand on that a bit, seeing if she's a prime candidate for death before, or during, the Last Battle.

I'll start with the evidence saying she won't die. There's less of this, I believe.

As discussed two weeks ago, Min sees Birgitte bound to a man who is "older" and "much younger," but is the same man (Winter's Heart, Chapter 12, "A Lily in Winter"). If Birgitte dies and is reborn right away, she will be younger than Gaidal Cain, like normal. Alternately, she could die and not be reborn, but I think the results would be the same. The next time around, he would be born first and she would be born later. For Gaidal to be the younger of the pair, I'd say that she has to live through this life.

That's the only logic I can find that points to her surviving. Now for reasons she will die.

Birgitte is a tragic character, one of the most tragic in the series. Her greatest fear comes from losing her memories, which would make her forget Gaidal Cain. She begins to drink heavily to drown her sorrows. She also hates people knowing her past and that she is a Hero. She feels like that title is undeserved in this life because she hasn't done anything to deserve it. In the past, she only did what she had to, and the pressure of living up to her fame is too much for her to handle. She doesn't like the titles Elayne has forced on her, and though Birgitte cares for Elayne greatly, their relationship doesn't bring the comfort it should. In short, Birgitte doesn't have much to live for.

One thing Robert Jordan said points to Birgitte's death:

In all honesty, I think this means that Birgitte might die before the Horn is sounded again. When asked something along the same lines, Brandon Sanderson gives a straightforward answer.

The same would be true about Birgitte. Even if she hasn't been "spun out" in the traditional sense, her soul isn't in Tel'aran'rhiod to come to the call of the Horn. And if she died, I think her soul would go to the "waiting place" before going to Tel'aran'rhiod (which is also the reason I don't think Rand will be ripped out of Tel'aran'rhiod after his death). Of course, there are some things Robert Jordan RAFO'ed that Brandon Sanderson has answered, so perhaps that's not the best proof.

So here's something better. First, Elayne thinks about how Birgitte is unable to use a sword.

Next, Elayne comments on how Birgitte refuses to use a sword.

And finally, Birgitte is wearing a sword.

This, my friends, is foreshadowing. And notice how it's dropped in so casually; there's no extra attention given to it. That's good foreshadowing. In fact, when Towers of Midnight first came out, many people questioned this part in the book. It seemed so out of place with Birgitte's earlier insistence that she won't touch a sword. I think a lot of people thought it was a mistake of sorts, but I'm sure it's just a hint of things to come, trying to sneak below our radar. As a student of literature, I feel these little signs are meant to be important clues to later plotlines.

One last thing Min saw around Elayne might point to a tragic event with Birgitte:

Perhaps it's Birgitte stabbing herself, cutting off her own hand by accident? Or maybe something not so accidental? Maybe it will be some sort of sacrifice, Birgitte giving up her life to save Elayne's?

I think Birgitte is going to be the most important character to die during the final book. I honestly believe all of our "main" characters will live. We'll go into some of the possibilities of that sometime later. That's all for this week. For next time, I want to speculate a bit on the connection between the three ta'veren. Thanks for reading!

*Unfortunately, a lot of the art posted to the Facebook page is uncredited. I can't tell you how common it is to see uncredited fan art, or how disappointing. We fan artists put a lot of heart into our art, and we love to share it with you. If you value our work, please do us the honor of giving us credit for it!

In case you don't know, this is the etiquette for sharing art: Ask permission before reposting, if possible. You should also inform the artist that you have reposted their work and provide them a link to the page (again, if possible). At the very least, provide the artist's name when you repost and include a link to their gallery page, if they have one.

For my latest Wheel of Time confessional, I'd like to cover Verin. Please note that there will be discussion of events from the entire series up to the end of Towers of Midnight.

I'm sure we all know how awesome Verin turned out to be, but how many of us expected that of her when we were reading through the books for the first time? When we first met Verin, she seemed very unremarkable, always lost in thought or taking notes in a notebook. She was the typical Brown Aes Sedai. Throughout the series, we get very subtle hints that there might be more to Verin than we realize.

Early in the series, we get that statement from Verin that is later contradicted by Moiraine. If I'm remembering correctly, we do not know the fact of the oaths being able to be broken by the Black. So, at the time, we probably all shrugged it off as a continuity error. Later in the Aiel camp in Cairhien, we see from Verin's point of view and the things she was saying and doing to the Aes Sedai that were captured after Dumai's Wells, along with the things she was thinking to herself. The thoughts were the most ominous part about it. Later in Far Madding when Verin gives a false name, her thoughts about why she gave her false name really start to make you suspect Verin of being of the Black. That makes you go back and question why Verin had given the dream ring ter'angreal to Egwene. I never could make the facts mesh. Later, we see Verin again when Mat finds her asking after Perrin and him with the charcoal drawings that she said a Darkfriend had given her. She gives Mat a sealed letter and makes him promise to do what the letter says if he opens it. The next time we see Verin after that, she is in Egwene's room and we learn the full truth of everything. Verin was a member of the Black Ajah, but to spy on them for the side of the Light, and she effectively listed almost every Black Ajah member in her notebook that she handed over to Egwene. Verin single-handedly outed almost the entire Black Ajah and warned that Mesaana was in the Tower without ever being suspected by the other members of the Shadow.

When we learned the truth about Verin, it was one of the biggest WTF moments I had ever seen in a book. I had to read the whole section a second time to make sure I read it right. Verin is probably my second most favorite Aes Sedai in the series just for how awesome she is, and for actually being an intelligent Aes Sedai instead of one of the squabblers.

When last we left our intrepid hero, he was planning to meet an unknown man and woman at a pub for a job. But just who were these mysterious people, and what was this job that they were needing him for?

(PUB BACKGROUND NOISES)

Lan

Your friend is late. Are you sure this is the best of ideas?

Moiriane

I was going to ask that professor we normally hire, but he was already out on a job. Besides, I didn't hear you come up with anything better.

Lan

What is it with you and guys that wear hats, anyway? At least this kid doesn't carry a whip.

Moiriane

Hush, here comes Mr. Cauthon now.

Lan:

And the older man with him?

Moiraine

I suppose we'll find out shortly, won't we.

(CHAIRS MOVING, PEOPLE SITTING DOWN WITH DRINKS)

Mat

Well, mister, I take it you're the one I'm looking for?

Moiraine

Actually, Mr. Cauthon, I'm the one that has the job for you. My associate is only here for security, as I assume your friend is as well?

Mat

In a fashion. Just consider us a team of professionals. There are two more of us outside, in case you're thinking of pulling something funny. Now, you went to the trouble of finding us, so I take it that you have a problem that no one else can help with?

Moiraine

In a fashion. I'm looking for an artifact. It's been missing for a long time, but I've come across a clue as to where it might be.

Mat

You want to hire us for a treasure hunt?

Moiraine

The challenge is in not just the hunt, but in who else may be looking for it. I want to hire you for travel to Tar Valon. Myself, my compatriot, our two horses, and no questions asked until we get there.

Thom

You in some sort of local trouble?

Moiraine

Let's just say that we'd like to avoid any unnecessary entanglements.

Mat

Well, that's the trick then, isn't it. It's going to cost you. Let's say 50 crowns now, and 50 when we get to Tar Valon.

Lan

A hundred crowns? We could hire a regiment for that.

Mat

But who will you get to lead them? You?

Lan

I'm not that bad of a captain.

Moiraine

I'll agree to the price, but 25 up front, 25 when we get to Tar Valon, and the rest when we reach our final goal.

Mat

Deal. When do we leave?

Moiraine

Tonight would be best. I'd hate to dally only to find it's been wiped off the face of the Pattern.

Mat

Thom, gather the others and have them meet us at the stables.

And so the journey begins. Join us again in two weeks when our intrepid heroes reach the gates of Tar Valon, and find out just what they've gotten themselves into.
