I think witches have always been mistrusted, even when they weren't really witches.

These witches have real power and hardly anyone has ever met them.

If they have met them they've either had male relatives destroyed by them or females essentially kidnapped from their POV so I don't see why the common folk wouldn't fear and therefore hate them.

Because they're the Spanish Inquisition.

I think they're thought of as witches, wielding power most can't use and don't understand. Kind of the way people distrust mutants in the marvel universe.

Last night I had the pleasure to show Cindy The Usual Suspects, which I consider one of the bestest movies in the entire history of film. I refused to tell her the ending, but she guessed it anyway (sooner or later).

I just had trouble believing it could be as obvious as it seemed.
