  1. Hi all. I read books 1-11 between 2004-2006, and then left the series. Started again after watching the show, and am in the middle of Book 3. Trying to figure out how certain things make sense, hoping more experienced readers can help. The gist of it is that it seems there are plenty of opportunities for the Shadow to take care of business that they don't take, and I don't get why (other than the usual plot incoherence in such stories)... Here are a few: -if either Ba'alzaman or another forsaken or the DO himself wanted Egwene and Nyneave out of the picture so that they couldn't help Rand ... why go through the trouble of having Liandrin take them to the Seanchean …

Can anybody think of better darkfriend cake puns? The best I could come up with is Black Ajah Forest Gateau.

Hey, I just thought of this, and thought it could be conversed. (Great tv show too, though I cringe at any change, marvel at the visuals) I still think Taim as of LoC is Be'lal brought back, so that same as for Osan'gar and Aran'gar, Taim was captured, and Be'lal's soul or mind was put into his body. I must now then preface this with my understanding, and counter the more usual arguments, and give a little more than last time 5 or 6 or 7 years ago. To begin, I think Mazrim Taim was as a certain powerful male channeller captured from Aes Sedai who were carrying him toward Tar Valon, and taken against his will again to Shayol Ghul, where …

  4. Interested to hear other scenes that get people's blood boiling (but in a good way).

Hello! I have a small question about the audio books (I'm not sure if this is the best section to do it...). From what I found online Kate Reading and Michael Kramer do all the books and they are very well ranted. But I also found that Rosamund Pike did a new version of the Eye of the World. What do you think about this new version? Which one do you prefer? Do you thing she will do more?

  6. I just read the part of the book where the wise ones tell Rand about his parents. I am confused as to how the wise ones know who his parents are. Is it meant to remain a secret as to why they know it or am I missing something? I would appreciate it if someone could explain this without spoilers. Thanks in advance.

(This is going to sound somewhat Marian, for those of the Catholic religious persuasion.) But Atha'an Miere means Sea People, and Do Miere Avron means Watchers over the Waves. Lanfear's name initially is Mierin, so ... Seagirl? Seawoman? Mermaid? Her assumed name in the Hunt for the Horn and until she unveils herself to Rand, is Selene, which by some strange coincidence, happens to be derived from the name for the ancient Greek Moon Goddess. The name she chose for herself is Lanfear, Daughter of the Night in the Old Tongue. And her colours are all moon-related. Until she is demoted by Moridin, all her names have to do with either the sea or the moo…

  8. I think RJ said at one point that there was a massive disaster at the end of the First Age, but I can’t find where he said that. Does anybody else remember this/know where I can find it or am I misremembering? Thanks.

Hi all. Finally got round to reading the first book after being advised to read it about....20 years ago hehe. I enjoyed the book a lot and I am going to post a few points which may seem like I am trying to be ultra critical, I am not but I do not understand a large portion of the ending of Eye of the World. For reference, I will certainly go on and read book 2. Ok, my confusion comes from the book being a detailed story of a long adventure, then all of a sudden as they go back outside at the eye of the world, it kinda feels like the writer runs out of energy? All of a sudden Rand vanishes and appears in a battle (is this t…

I wonder what WoT would have been if Tor had kept RJ to six books. I wonder if the quality of the story would have been higher overall, with less additives weighing down the story. Would we have avoided book 10 (?) which covered a week of time from 4 difference characters PoV? I feel like the first 6 books were amazing and then began a decided drop in the quality of the books. I enjoyed the books as a whole, but I LOVED the first 6 books. The Battle of Dumai’s Wells is probably my favorite scene of any book. I wish the whole series could have kept the pacing of the first 3 books and the quality of the first 6.

Hello, I have tried to find a resource that I used back during my last reread in 2013. It was a list of all the characters, but it had every reference to each character listed (for example- every appearance of Matt, what book, chapters, with summary.) I have been trying to search for it, but with the TV series, I can't seem to find it. I'm not even sure if it exists. If it does, would someone be kind enough to link it? Thank you.

So I know this is a topic that is quite old, but I am on my re-read of LoC and I just finished dreaded chapter ten when Alanna bonds Rand and I rememberd that this was the first time that I threw the book against the wall swearing not to read one more word of WoT and spewing hate against Aes Sedia. This scene deeply disturbed me with so many differant things [ some I cant even put into words and some will get me permanently banned from DM]. To start I felt that Rand could have at least asked, pleaded, or demanded that Alanna remove the bond at once, wich He didnt say a word. RJ spoke of bonding somone without there permission as an unspeakleable disgusting act alikened to…

  13. So I've just listened to chapter 6 of TFoH, where Rand stands in his bed chamber after the whole thing with the darkhounds, looking at the two Access Keys to the male and female sa'angreal (Choedan Kal). But here's where I get confused: When he thinks about the male sa'angreal connected to the male access key, he mentions that fortunately he and it are divided by the Aryth Ocean? And when he thinks about the female sa'angreal, he mentions that he hopes it is still buried in Caihrien. But... the male sa'angreal is the one being excavated in Caihrien; not the female one, right? The one he encounters in The Great Hunt? I've re-listened to this three times no…

Hi All, I'm new here, but I'm a long time Wheel of Time book collector. I recently made a new website that helps you determine the value/price of a rare WOT book. Check it out and let me know what you think! (It's completely free and contains no ads) www.WOTworth.com Thanks in advance!

  15. hey, i know its literally 15 years later but I got you. I just read the EOTW and its pretty crazy, but I know its only going to get better. I havent really looked at a bunch of these threads before because Im sure they all have spoilers but I wanted to read some theories or say some of my own. So I appreciate that. So obviously the next step for the gang is to go to Tar Valon, they said that at the end of the book and it just makes sense to go back to "headquarters" after a long mission. But who's going to go? I think Rand will try to go back home, but Tar Valon is on the way so he goes with them because he knows nothing about the real world to be by himself really. …

  16. This past week, I've come to realize that many readers view Rand's battle of possibilities with the Dark One as being, primarily, about free will. Typically, this reading appears to be based on Rand's attempt to show a utopia in which there is no evil. I believe that, while the issue of free will is certainly related to the central conflict between the Light and the Shadow, in those scenes, the real issue is conscience. What Rand comes to realize is that the existence of evil—and humanity's awareness of it—is necessary for the existence of a real conscience, that not only enables humans to discern right from wrong, good from evil, but also pushes…

Is it ever described how the link between Fade and Trolloc is initiated? I don't think it is covered in the books, do you think they will cover it in the show? Does the Fade have to 'lay hands' on each one to establish the link?

When the horn was first blown by Mat, the heroes said they needed the banner to follow. Everyone waited while Perrin cut a sapling and mounted the banner - never mind the Seanchan. But it is also said the heroes will fight for whoever blows the horn - be they light or dark. Am I misremembering? If a trolloc got to the horn first, would the heroes have just showed up and just milled around because they didn't have a banner to follow.

Will the Ways in the Fourth Age be Safe, Sealed, Forgotten or destroyed in some fashion?

  20. If women can see the weaves of other women who use the OP, why can't Moiraine and Egwene see the shield Lanfear put around Asmodean?

  21. Started by FanofKnotai,

In DR Rand is sitting by his fire after waking from the dream where he almost killed Perrin when riders approach. The riders ask to share his fire and he agrees. Right before he slices off the leaders head and kills the rest of the men. Never was there any justification for this. Or did I miss it? It appears as if he assumed they were darkfriends without even an ounce of proof. What gives?

  22. Started by UOweTamASword,

I've seen this debate before, but I'm not sure in a specific thread on this topic (sorry if covered). The major question being will or can the Wheel of Time continue spinning infinitely? I think this mostly comes up with regard to Elan Morin/Ishamael's theory that with approaching infinite chances and nonzero probability of success, the Dark One is bound to break the Wheel eventually. Others say that if the Wheel is infinite then there have already been infinite chances and so the probably of the DO's success must be zero. But I think Elan Morin doesn't believe that, just that his chances will approach infinity (not actually be infinite). Of course…

  23. When Leane was healed of her stilling, she lost 2/3rds of her strength. It seems that being healed by Nyneave lead to an imperfect healing because of some sort of male/female channeling dynamic. So after the last battle, if she sought healing from Damar Flinn, would she need to be stilled again and then reconnected to the source or could the healing work off of the ground work done by Nynaeve and not require stilling Leane again? (Assuming Leane survived and didn’t die off screen)

  24. Has RJ ever revealed if Egwene is the rebirth of someone from Ages Past? I began a re-read of The Eye of the World today and Moiraine's story of Manetheren, more specifically the role of Eldrain, King Aemond's wife, drew shocking parallels to Egwene's roll in the Last Battle. In fact that whole battle sequence draws remarkably similar parallells to the Last Battle itself. My theory, is that Egwene is Eldrain reborn, and that RJ performed his greatest Forshadowing ever by showing us the Last Battle in book 1!

So the new show trailer is coming under criticism in the usual places because the pregnant Aiel woman fighting Illianers on a snowy mountain isn't veiled. This is a book lore question though: would Shaiel have necessarily been veiled? TSR, Ch 34 "He Who Comes with the Dawn" "...Shaiel found herself with child. By the laws, she should have returned to the Three-fold Land. A Maiden is forbidden to carry the spear while she carries a child. But Janduin could forbid her nothing... So she stayed, and in the last fight, before Tar Valon, she was lost, and the child was lost." The relevant bit here is that a Maiden is forbidden to …

  28. Rand, lews Therrin Telamon, Ishamael? the land is one with the dragon, the dragon is one with the land. I believe they are a three part soul, the dark one was created when lews therrin was corrupted, the forsaken bound, and shaoul ghoul created. Ishamael is his (lews therrin) madness manifest which caused bealzamum to search out his other ,better part, of his soul(Rand). When shadar logath was destroyed and the source cleansed the last battle truly started between his true selves.

Hey all! So I don't know how many answers I'll get that are spoiler free on this subject. I'm in the middle of Book 4, rn, and don't want spoilers going forward. That being said, I have SO many questions about who or what the DO is. He's referred to in the masculine, and also the singular. Does this mean he was a human man at some point? He feels like a nebulous evil. He's not someone or something that can be understood or explored at this point in the series (book 4), and so I'm just confused about his motives. To destroy the world? Sure, but like what then? I'm curious if the DO ever gets a character study and becomes more than nebulous evil? Does he h…

  30. Do you think Olver could be Gaidal Cain reincarnated? Olver appears in the books shortly after Birgitte leaves Tel'aran'rhiod. We know time passes differently there - perhaps not linearly. Before her bare escape from death in Tel'aran'rhiod, Birgitte says she hasn't seen Gaidal in a while and thinks the Wheel spun him out. Then we meet Olver, who isn't very easy on the eyes, just like Gaidal apparently, and is several years older (8?) than Birgitte would've been had she been born normally, as she said he is in each incarnation. Olver always struck me as a bit of an odd character to throw into the mix, a bit random, until my current re-reading, where this thought …
