I've recently been thinking of an interesting connection. It is the connection each Ta'veren character (Rand, Mat and Perrin) have to the Shadow in the eyes of the average Randlander. Throughout the entire series, normal Randladers, in their interactions with the Ta'veren, often connect them to the Shadow. I had not really noticed it before, but the more I think about it, the clearer it becomes. The easiest example is Rand. He is the Dragon Reborn. For centuries, the Dragon's Fang has been posted on peoples' doors as a sign of the DO, an indication that a DF lives there. All male Aes Sedai are connected to the Shadow through the Taint. In particular, the DR has al…

Just noticed Luckers mentioning that there were originally 12 major ajahs. Was this in the AoL or post-breaking? I am currently rereading tGH and assumed the 7 colored steps around the portal stones in the reflection world represented the 7 Ajahs, yet there were more ajahs in the AoL. We know that the portal stones were not created in the AoL, so is this a sign of things to come i.e., evidence of the circular nature of the WoT? or just a coincidence?

Almost finished with KoD. A very good read. Much better than CoT. Two things struck me though. Perrin would have made a deal with the devil to get his wife back; I can understand wanting her back, but make a deal with absolute evil? And Elayne's utter complete stupidity going in after the BA and getting Aes Sedai killed, not to mention hundreds of her soldiers. And she barely even cared! My goodness, how cold can you get? And Birgitte didn't even dress her down for ignoring her advice and getting hundreds of people killed. RJ was surprised at folks not getting the Gasp moment; to me this was just as bad. Your thoughts? I don't want this to be a bash the character threa…

It's been quite a few years now, but I remember in an interview RJ mentioned plans for 3 prequels and another series that he had started planning in his mind. New Spring was 1 of the prequels, does anyone remember what the others were supposed to be about? What about that other series he had started thinking about? Were there any further comments on that? Just curious. Thanks.

Anyone else under the impression that Gaidel Cain is Olver, I know that he was missing for awhile when Birgitte was still herself before being forced out of Telaranrhiod and she thought that he had been reincarnated into his next life, and the fact that he was suppose to be not goodlooking and they are always making remarks about Olvers looks, makes me think that he was born as Olver? When I was reading the ending tonight with Olver going to get his knife and talking about being a warrior and getting revenge for his parents, it just struck me again that I really wonder if he is not Gaidel.

I was curious as to what everyone's opinion is on this. When the darkhounds attack mats room in Rhuidean in book 5, it is said he is slobbered on, and that the slobber kills. Rand than comes and saves the day with balefire. Was mat dead, but than brought back because of the balefire?

I've not been here for a while, and I don't know if there is a thread dedicated to discussing the Forsaken, but if there is, can someone please bump it for me? Anyways, I just love the Forsaken. They're my favorite characters, and Robert Jordan alls keeps me in the dark waiting for more about them. I'm only up to Knife of Dreams right now, so I can only discuss their characters as far as that book, but I loved the chapter "At the Gardens", chapter 3 of the book Knife of Dreams. Also, the events at the end of "Winter's Heart" were amazing. There's so many interesting things about the Forsaken. But anyways, I just want to know who your favorite Forsaken is. My ran…

pretty sure I'm at least a 4 - 6 man myself, (tho most of those were a long time ago) and will probly reread the whole thing only once more, after every last installment has come out and enough decades have gone by for me to have significantly forgotten much of what happens (ie old age / retirement). btw let me know if you think the choices should be different, and / or post here with any elaborations you might have

So, I'm reading through ToM right now and ran across Min's viewing just after Rand returns in Chapter 13. I haven't seen any discusion on this one, so I thought I'd bring it up. The cavern and bloodstained rocks I believe are separate events due to the periods between each one (and the fact the narration specifically said "viewings"). Specifically I think the cavern is the same one all the Forsaken travel through to reach the Bore (the one that can shrink in size, forcing the Chosen to crawl on their knees or get skewered by its teeth-like stalactites--teeth are in a mouth and Min's viewing mentions the cave gaping like a mouth), implying that Rand will travel thro…

I originally posted this in the Forsaken thread, but I kind of wandered from the topic, and so I decided to make a new thread... Fair warning, I am at work and am deeply bored, and so I've gone off on a massive tangent of make-believe in this thread. Hope you enjoy it though, I had fun... :D I was fine with how the Forsaken were portrayed in the earlier books--knowledgeable, but out of their own context their abilities were blunted. My problem is that in order for narative tension, that needed to resolve itself--and in Towers of Midnight, the book entitled for [danger of] the Forsaken. I was actually thinking about this recently, and what I don't understand is …

I am currently re-reading tGS, and I'm in ch22, The Last That Could Be Done. Rand is having an internal conversation with "Lews Therin" about how he sealed the Bore. So, I thought, what if the three becoming one refers to saidin, saidar, and the True Power all channeled through Callandor? Since something has to "close the gap", and Rand can now apparently tap into the True Power, would it not make sense to use that which is already tainted to close the gap?

The things I love most about fantasy novels are the maps. I thrilled to THE HOBBIT'S map of Wilderland when I was a kid. I own the old Atlas of Middle Earth and the Atlas of the Land (and would love to see an Atlas of WOT). I am writing my own fantasy novel, and I've lost count of how many times I have happily drawn and revised the maps for my Rydlorypt. The single best thing about THE WORLD OF ROBERT JORDAN'S WHEEL OF TIME is that map of the global world, complete with scale grid (although, since it isn't on a Mercator projection, it has some pretty severe problems, including polar regions that are apparently 25,000 miles wide!). What I am wondering is this: did…

So re-listening WOT and in the FoH right before Rand passes out after the battle for Cairhien (he falls of the horse and the maidens catch him, I think it's chapter 44 or 45) he says something that caught my eyes. He says something to the extend of needing to find his people and than he says (after hearing LTT and all that) "I'm Rand al'Thor and I need to see" or something to that effect. The way it sounded, through the view of knowing the whole "seeing" significance later on, as one of those little foreshadowing that RJ was so good at. So, am I seeing (or hearing things) or I'm not alone?

I want to talk about what Lews Therin remembers from his life- the events, the technology, the people... Anything! Which would be different OR the same as what the general population, in Rand's time, know about how he went mad and what that time was like. What are the similarities and differences? If possible, could you include any evidence you can find or remember? Even the book it came from would be very helpful. I am currently working on an assessment task under the topic of 'History and Memory'. I needed a text which talked about these things and how they are often conflicting. I was naturally drawn towards using a text which I enjoy, so the WoT seemed an obvious cho…

Something just kinda occurred to me, might be nothing and it isn't well thought out but anyways here goes. So Rand and Ishy are linked right? Well Rand as LTT has died once and everyone seems to think he's going to die again at Tarmon Gai'don... But Ishy has also died once - and he saved Rand's life for a reason that I at least do not fully understand. Im not sure what i'm truly trying to get at - But maybe the connection between Rand and Ishy is more intimate than we first suspected. Maybe his lives have already been used up... Anyway, thoughts?

I think that the One Power is the power of the Creator, and he uses it to move the Wheel of Time. Saidin rushes forward and pushes the Wheel of Time forward so that ages can come and pass, where as Saidar is the power that stops the Wheel from spinning too fast, it is what gives that pattern time to form and not some mess. Thoughts.....

Note: Please forgive any incorrect use of English, since it's not my first language. I know that the DO has, as of now, not a direct influence in Randland. Even when the bore was completely open right at the end of the AoL, he could only catalyze "evil thoughts" and desires of people. He has, however, some sort of direct influence right in the bore. I was wondering, following the Cyndane/Moridin reincarnation issue, why doesn't the DO return from the dead other DFs? I think that he can only return those sworn to him. Granted. But, why doesn't he return all those DF that over the centuries have died. Many black ajah have perished without the use of balefire. So there …

I don't know whether this fact has been brought to light or not. In the third book of WoT (The Dragon Reborn), when Liandrin and her colleagues go on a killing and stealing spree, they steal many ter'angreals. Since then, we have seen the use of every ter'angreal they had, except the one Elayne described as "the one which somehow alters luck."Given the fact that such a ter'angreal is more dangerous than a balefire-causing rod, why hasn't it been brought to light yet? Mat's luck has been the focal point of the entire series up to now. So much focused that even the mention of Rand's ability to alter events and Perrin's wolfish traits seem to be mere shadows. As far as …

So the wheel turns and ages that were come to be again - and I get this sense of helplessness, that no matter what you do, events, both good and evil, are destined or doomed to repeat themselves over and over and over. Is the real enemy the wheel itself? The more I contemplate the series as a whole, the more it seems to point to this idea that mankind is almost trapped in this endless cycle, like a hamster running on a wheel, doomed to progress to a certain point, destroy itself, then start over, rebuild, and eventually destroy itself again and again and again. Is Rand preparing the break the wheel, the end this cycle, to alter time itself and set it on a linear p…

Masuri, Annoura and the Shiny Dragon Man Ok, in this thread I'm going to try to offer an answer for two mysteries. Who is the Fake Rand who appears to Masema in tGS, and who are Masuri and Annoura meeting with in Masema's camp throughout KoD. It's somewhat convuluted, so bear with me. Who are Masuri and Annoura Meeting With? In KoD Masuri and Annoura (and Masuri's Warder) are seen within Masema's camp by Havier, one of the Cha Faile. The question is--who were they going to meet, and why? Masema Perrin believes they went to meet Masema himself, which stands to reason given that (to Perrin) he is the only figure in that camp worth an Aes Sedai'…

Okay, here’s an organizational question concerning the Dark One’s followers. We all know that Darkfriends exist, however they tend to operate as individuals or as small cells. Before the seals weakened and let the Forsaken out, who was running the overall show? Who coordinated the darkfriends and planned events? We all know Myrddraal are smart, but they’ve never been shown to be leaders of men—only trollocs. I can’t imagine Gray Men taking orders from shadowspawn (especially considering no shadowspawn has been shown to be intelligent). Ishy comes out every 1,000 years or so, but in the meantime who was calling the shots?

This is the thing that had me baffled quite a bit while I was reading mid-to-late books. In LOC when Sheriam & co tells her that she is to be Amirlyn Seat she objects it for … sentence or two (or three) and next day when talking to Nynaeve and Elayne it’s: I intend to be Amirlyn, not puppet. So, what I want to ask you is where does all that confidence comes from? What makes her think that she’s qualified for the job at all, let alone why does she think she could run Tower better than Sheriam’s group, or Romanda’s or Lelaina’s or in fact any of the Sitters? After all she is accepted promoted to AS on technicality, 18-years old with few months spend in Tower seriously …

Moraine brings a large no of objects of power to Cairhien..have they been sent to the WT and what about the rest left behind? And what about the items in Tear? It is funny when the characters are all complaining about not have angreal but no one tries to look at these 2 stashes. Why does the Dragon who has complete access to these 2 stockpiles not look at them to find another angreal to replace his lost one.

Everyone seems to agree that Taim is evil incarnate. What if Moridin has been Taim all along (I've seen this theory posted a lot)and Taim has been held captive the entire time? I think it likely that the field of merrilor will be a general snipeout, a lot of rulers will be taken out by dreadlords while distracted by trollocs in Caemlyn an attack by trolloc/myrddraal on the FoM. Moridin will be matched vs Logain and lightside Ashaman, while Perrin destroys the dreamspike. Logain will be pressed hard because obviously Ishy is stronger. But then the dreamspike is destroyed and Rand with his aes sedai and Ashaman will join the fight and Ishy is forced to retreat to his blig…
