So, Moridin is Nae’blis. Why exactly? As near as I can determine, that title has been all but promised to Demandred, Sammael and Graendal. Those last two at the same time. Possibly other of the Chosen as well. At the beginning of LoC, Demandred is in the Pit of Doom and the DO asks him "WOULD YOU BE NAE’BLIS?" At the end of LoC, Demandred is kneeling in the Pit of Doom, asking the DO, "Have I not done well? Apparently not. Not well enough to get the big tamale in any case. During that time, Ishmael has been brought back on the scene in his fancy new Moridin body and been officially granted the title of Nae’blis. What did he do during the time pe…

Well, the title says it all! What are your least favourite plot twists throughout the series? Although this is my favourite fantasy series, I have quite a number of them. In no particular order: 1. Egwene becoming Amyrlin. There are reasons, but they don't seem to stack up for me. 2. Most of Mat's plotline...somehow his entire personality seems full of contradictions. 3. Accepted and Novices flocking to Salidar when the location is secret to anybody but Aes Sedai looking for eyes and ears. 4. The huge build up to Elayne ascension to the Lion Throne and its abrupt, unsatisfactory ending. 5. The huge build up to the battle between the White Tower fact…

One thing I never understood - why doesn't world culture simply try and gentle every man possible, just on the chance he can channel. I mean, the whole world fears men channelers but does absolutely nothing about it except wait for them to go mad, destroy a village, and hope and pray the AS come and save the day. I think it much more plausible if they had a system of either trying to gentle every male. It wouldn't hurt the non-channelers and probably wouldn't kill the ones who do. How could there be a feeling of such loss when the man has no experience with the OP? THey would live and be happy for the rest of their lives. If it a case of resources, you could…

Cleansing the source is arguably the biggest moment in the WoT to date. It's something no one believed possible, yet Rand managed to pull it off. After he's done so we are shown a brief scene with the Asha'man who helped defend Rand during the attack at Shadar Logoth. They are ecstatic that the source has been cleansed. After that point the fact is only brought up a few more times. When it is those who bring it up mostly do so to scoff and say its not possible. The one person who can channel I remember discussing it was Logain, and while he acknowledged that it was clean he didn't give credit to Rand. He gave it to the creator. I'd have expected commentary by …

Hello, I am new to the board. I have read the series more than once, but have only gotten up to book 7. I basically had stopped because I found I would read up to the current book released and forget more information than I would like as it would be 2-3 years between releases. So I have decided to wait until the series is done, or very close to it. Well, as the first volume of the last book is about to be released, I think I am going to start the series again and I noticed that both Eye of the World and The Great Hunt have also been released in two book formats. My question is, what is the main differences between the original one book release compared to …

With The Gathering Storm only a couple of weeks away, it might be useful to review the situation for the Light both tactically and strategically. Who's where? With what force level? Gareth Bryne is outside Tar Valon with at least 50,000 troops. There is a defense force of unknown ( but likely substantial ) strength within Tar Valon. Perrin and his forces are located not far from where Mat and the Band should be heading, as well as Galad and his portion of the Whitecloaks. Anybody have an estimate of the size that such a combined force should number? Ituralde should be heading home to Arad Doman and gathering in his raiding parties as he goes. Any troop n…

I'm not sure if this has already been said but when Lanfear and Ishamael made the bore into the DO's prison it kinda reminds me of Adam and Eve and eating the forbiddon apple. Like before the bore the world was pretty much perfect but as soon as the DO breaks free all this bad stuff (sin) enters the world ie: Forsaken betraying the light. And its a man and a woman who create the bore like Adam and Eve. I don't know just my thoughts.

I searched this, but never found a topic quite the same. A buddy of mine have a long standing argument about the Aes Sedai and how they apparently rolled over for the Aiel Wise One's, plus, how seemingly absurd it is that the the Two Rivers folks aren't pushed around by them. I love how RJ starts the books with Aes Sedai being all powerful and almost god like. They assume they are correct at all times and believe they are all knowing. With a few exceptions like Moraine of course. Bottom line, the vast majority are pompous blow hards. However, as the stories go on we find out they are completely wrong about so many things. I especially love how RJ makes …

Ok, I've read so many rants about Faile and Elayne and Egwene and Gawyn and Perrin et blech, so I thought I'd ask people to look past the hate. Here's my question: who is your least favorite character, and what is one thing, in spite of everything else you hate about them, that you have to admit you actually admire? It can be a personality trait or a thing they did, and it can be more than one thing (though it might be hard enough to think of one). I'll start: I can't stand Berelain. I just don't understand why any woman would make a sport of laying claim to a married man, and the way she pursues Perrin is disgusting. Her whole personality is an anathema to me. BUT…

o/~ I've got a theory... It could be bunnies... o/~ Actually, RJ said Asmo took a long step or long fall, or similar I believe... Could Asmo not TECHNICALLY be dead - i.e. he got pushed into a skimming gateway and is infinitely falling a la the maiden that fell? DO can't ressurect him 'cause he's not dead-dead, and it does narrow the field to a Traveling channeller killing him...

The viewings http://13depository.blogspot.com/2002/03/mins-viewings.html First off, the severed hand is most likely Rand's. Who else could it belong to. As for the second viewing, I see two distinct possibilities. First that Elayne uses Sylvase's "secretary" to torture the captured darkfriends, and then she executes the Black Ajah sisters (which would be against Tower law). The second possibility is that Sylvase is Cyndane or Moghedien and her secretary is used on Elayne herself. Does anyone see any other possibilities?

I was wondering if anyone found the fact both Nicola and the Wise Ones used the very similar phrasing - 'three women on a boat'? a) Aiel and boats don't mix well. b) The fact BOTH said boat suggests that it's a genuine boat - not a metaphorical boat? Any ideas? Could the boat be an Athan Miere boat? We've not heard much about the Coramoor prophecies...

What two cahracters would you like to see meld together or merge into one if you prefer, whilst still retaining some traits and skills of each individual,? I would like to see Faile and galad merge and then possibly die soon after, two birds one stone.

Ok, so its been awhile since I have read the early books, so bear with me if my basis behind this is off(also, feel free to correct me). I was thinking about the "to live you must die" thing, and thought what if the Rand that dies is a Rand form one of the possible worlds via the portal stones? Not sure how this could come about, or even if the portal stones work the other way, but maybe our Rand enters one at some point in the last 3 books? Just thought Id throw the theory out there, since I have read many interesting ones, but not one along these lines. http://members.casema.nl/e.f.delaat/Dragon%20Con%20day%202.html Is a link to Dragoncon05 interview, towards …

So, we know: Channeler > Warder Female > Female = Very little control over the Female Warder. Female > Male = Some control, including being able to compel obedience Male > Female = Basically being able to force obedience Male > Male = Not yet seen? I'm wondering how much of these are due to 'extras' in the bonding, how much is pure loyalty and how much is due to differences between male & female. We know Birgitte & Elayne 'mirror' each other - would 2 men do the same? Could Elayne/Avi/Min compel Rand - they just don't know how to use the bond to do it? Also, Saidin/Saidar seem to 'protect' somewhat from the compulsion if wh…

...real life has reared it's ugly head and I'm woefully behind. I'm only barely into the Fires of Heaven, and it's now less than a month 'till the release, so I have a few choices.... 1)Continue reading as I have, read TGS when it comes out, then reread it again when I get to it in the series or 2)Stop reading now, read Leigh Butler's reread before the release, read TGS, then read everything again or 3)Continue reading as I am, listen to the audiobook when it comes out (I'm an audible.com member, and I'm saving a credit for the release), then read the actual book when it comes out. Perhaps it's lack of sleep, but I'm having trouble decidin…

I'm not sure if this has ever been discussed, but what would happen if Birgitte or another Hero of the Horn was balefired? Would their thread being burnt out of the Pattern completely destroy their soul or would they be sent right back to TAR? I personally think that they would be burnt out and unable to return to TAR. It seems to me that if the DO couldn't bring back Rhavin, and he's the lord of the grave, then how could the pattern bring back a burnt thread? Thoughts anyone?

I have a question about Balefire. Balefire is fully explained to us in TFoH, but used several times prior to this book. Was there any hint at balefire's effect on its victims prior to the explanation in TFoH? I can understand in the cases where Moiriane used it that the strength of her Balefire is fairly weak, only able to erase a few seconds. But I specifically remember Nynaeve using it against some fades in TDR that hurt or killed some of the Aiel that were there to rescue them. I cannot remember any specific hints to the effect of balefire prior to Moiraine's explanation. Did he add this effect to it later in the series? I know it is expressed as forbidden several time…

So the DO was free throughout the entire War of Power. This war lasted about 3 generations if you follow the flashbacks in Rand's trip to Rhuidean. That means that the DO had approx. 50-75 years to wreck havoc on the world. So what exactly did he do? Trollocs and Fades spewed forth from the blight and the Forsaken led armies of Dreadlords. Aside from the Forsaken, how is that different than what happened in the Trolloc Wars? The flashbacks show that society was still somewhat functional towards the end of the war. There is a scene occurring right as the bore gets resealed where Nym, Ogier, and Aiel are singing a field of crops. Obviously this means that society was still …

On a whim in Winter's Heart, Mat freed a Sea Folk damane. Later on when he is sneaking out of the city with a kidnapped Tuon and co., the dice that were rolling in his head stopped. The timing of it, even though he didn't notice, coincides with the escape of the Sea Folk channelers. A few books later we learn that quite a few of the Sea Folk prisoners were able to escape. In fact, they call it the Escape, since it was such a big deal for them to be free from the Seanchan. My question is whether Mat will become some type of Savior or mythical Hero in their legends, since Nestelle din Sakura South Star promised she wouldn't forget his help. ~Mashiara

This may have been dealt with already but if so I couldn’t find it. I was rereading PoD and WH in preparation for TGS and, of the top of my head, I can think of at least four Aes Sedai damane in those two books alone. My question to you wise ones out there is this: Given the three oaths, how can Aes Sedai damane even do the training with the sul'dam let alone go into battle for the Seanchan? To do this they would have to use the One as a weapon. And in training especial there is no way they could channel for their sul’dam until they were about to die if they did other wise. And this isn’t some behaviour to be broken, it is a force action, there is no way around it f…

Some of you will have seen this before, but I just did some updates on it and we have newbies, so here it is again... The Very Helpful Verin Theory This theory suggests that Verin is acting to stop the Aes Sedai doing what they do best. Meddling. Taking charge. Making an all around pest of themselves--and, oh yeah, destroying everything in the process. Or, more succinctly, that Verin is acting to stop the Aes Sedai from taking over whilst ensuring that they are there to help Rand when the Tarmon Gai'don comes round. In terms of the dangers--we need look no further than Moiraine, the Aes Sedai Rand came the closest to trusting (and therefore following)…

Gawayn's standard is a White Boar. There was another famous Whyte Boar in the history of the British Isles and that was Richard III. Anyone who doesn't already know how he ended up, I'll tell you he didn't end pretty as Richard III was the last British king to die in battle. You do the math.

This is just a Fun Hypothetical Question I was pondering this weekend. I originally posted it in another thread, but that thread was really alot more about other stuff, so I put it here... But, what if Mat diced against Rand or Perrin? Mat's sneaky, but, imo, the chances of him having his head handed to him rise exponentially. What do you think would happen? One thing to keep in mind is that Mat's amazing results when he gambles may well be among the most egregious misunderstandings among fans... Regarding the often Amazing Results of Mat's Exploits, People usually marvel and shake their heads and wonder...''Where does it come from?…

Mat and Rand are both pretty much told the same thing. They have to die to live. Does anyone else think they're connected, and if it happens to both of them, it almost certainly would happen to Perrin too. Any ideas?

Mat's foxhead is tested against Saidin on two seperate occasions with different results and I'm wondering if there is any wisdom on it. Rahvin kills Mat with lightening in Camelyn. Clearly the foxhead did not protect Mat from a man's channeling. It says that right in the text. Halima/Arangar channels at Mat during the celebration following Egwene's ascension to the Amyrlyn seat, in Salidar, but in this instance, the Foxhead goes cold. Mat turns around to confront a clearly astonished Halima. What she was trying to do it not apparent but as she is a male forsaken trapped in a female body, it's clear she attempted to channel Saidin at Mat. So which is it…

When she heals Logain he regains his full strength. Then she heals Siuan and Leane and both are considerably weaker than they were before. Later in the series Damer Flynn heals the women that were stilled during Rand's escape at Dumai Wells. All of them seem to have regained their full strength. Did Nynyeave just mess up when she healed Siuan or is it normal for a stilled woman to be healed at less than full strength?
