Wheel of Time Books

For all topics related to The Wheel of Time books. Please mark spoilers in the subject line.

  1. I began reading Wheel of Time in sixth grade. I would re-read it several times a year. It carried me through the 90s, the 2000s, and still further. I'm very disappointed with what the TV Show has done to the series. All I have to say on that matter is: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Four_Olds Which will lead to this: https://www.theguardian.com/world/2016/may/07/mao-little-general-horror-cultural-revolution E.G. Mesaana's Children. https://wot.fandom.com/wiki/Forsaken#Mesaana Jordan had a rare grasp of real history. Many of the places and events of the story are Asian. Particularly East Asian in their roots. It isn't surprisi…

I found myself wondering, at the end of MOL Birgitte says she can feel herself being reborn into the world soon, Elayne is pregnant, so is there a chance she could be reborn as royalty in her new life?

  3. Specifically about the end of the meeting. He is hanged by them and then Rand finds him hanging in the tree. My question is How did he end up hanging in the tree? I was under the impression that the Finn could not enter our world. Was it pure luck or coincidence that he ended up hanging in the tree after being thrown through the doorway? Did the Finn carry him through the doorway and place him in the tree? This is probably my 30th time re reading the books and I am always finding new things to question.

  4. Here is this sweet, innocent, small village girl promised to a tall, handsome, noble young man. Suddenly they're swooped away on some adventure leading to 3 gorgeous young women who immediately start sizing him up and portioning him out claiming, "oh the pattern, the pattern!" Mean while they pull the bait and switch on her. They flash Galad in front of her to make her head swim and bombard her psychologically considering the culture shock she must be through through. Plus... trollocs y'all... That's some scary stuff. And she ultimately ends up with Gawayn; who, it could be argued, was a significant handicap for her in the end. And then sacrificing herself to help save th…

  7. Started by KingK,

Hello again! As Min had said, in one fashion or another "point to to the bad, and there is good." The Wheel if time is all about Balance as we all know. For every good there is an evil, but the truth applies the other way. Myrddraal were created to fight for the Shadow. A being of Maggot white skin, that somehow dissappear in the Shadow. But what other characteristics are there of Myrddraal that make them stand out? Well, the wind does not touch them for one, cloaks remain still in a breeze. The are often seen riding a horse weilding a wicked black sword. Their eyes are missing only sho…

It has been pointed out to me that Rhuarc occasionally answers people and they then didn't realise they were speaking aloud. When Spoiler He meets Mat in TDR chpt. 54 Mat thinks And Rhuarc then answers him and Mat "had not realised he had spoken aloud." Same thing happens in TSR chpt. 22 when he answers Rand. Did anyone else notice things like this? I know there's a theory that Spoiler He can move unseen But is there anything more?

  9. *** Spoiler Alert *** The small three (Rand, Mat & Perrin being the big), were the first to be tasked with hunting dark sisters. This even led to Egwene's capture, something she really hated. Robert Jordan constantly reminds us how much Egwene hated being damane. So why don't these three think about asking Moghedien to point out who is black ajah in the tower? In fact, why does everyone in Salidar, including Siuan Sanche herself, just forget about them completely? I understand they have a lot on their plate, but their little disagreement with the White Tower pales in comparison to the fight to save time itself.

  10. So I'm on my 3rd reread of the entire series (I've probably read the first four books at least 5 times. Just finished the Gathering Storm. One of the things I hate is the impression I get that the authors approve of the Seanchan society. I don't get it. They recognize that they enslave women that can channel, but there seem to be a lot of references to their good government and efficiency. Also, one thing that always amazed me was that Egwene didn't issue an immediate attack on the Seanchan. Gateway directly into the room she was imprisoned in with linked sisters. Freeze anybody in that room and destroy the building with any and all people in the building.

  11. Basically what the title says - it becomes clear in the books that a channeler can be turned by 13 myrdraals and 13 channelers working in tandem. Is any reason given in the books for why this wasn't used far more than it was. The wiki list only 14 people we know have been turned, although it is likely more were turned at the Black Tower. What makes me wonder the most is that the Black Ajah has been around since at least the Trolloc Wars, but doesn't seem to have practiced Turning. As evidenced by the hunt for the Black Ajah under Seaine Sedai, it wasn't that hard to abduct a Sister for an evening, and the strategic implications of being able to slo…

Child Jaret Byar is driving me crazy.....listening to audiotapes (2nd time through). At least many of the other characters show growth throughout the series. You could re-name the Children of the Light, the Children of not going Anywhere, until Galadedrid shows up.

  13. I do not understand how Galina could be overpowered and re-,captured by the Shaido (Therava) after her escape, since she now possessed the oath rod and could now free herself from those oaths and use the one power to protect herself. Any ideas?

  14. Elayne was born to rule. She has been taught to lead from the cradle. But whenever she is with Egwene or Nynaeve she suddenly becomes the village girl and allows the others to take lead while sticks her nose in the air.

  15. I am on my second read of the series and on the last book. I had a random thought occur to me about the nature of the warder bond. I had always assumed that the bond made the individuals acutely aware of everything that the other was feeling, not just emotionally but in their physical body as well. With that in mind, it was surprising to me that Rand had no idea Elayne was pregnant until she told him. That’s all, just a thought I felt compelled to share.

  16. So, on my current reread it caught my eye, what tremendous pressure Rand has to be under all the time. Besides the fate to fight DO and probably die somewhere in future, besides the need to fight forsaken in present, to become more skilled in power, etc, he has to do something so crazy realms, aes sedai, whitecloaks and seanchan do not kill each other even before Last Battle begins. And what bothers me to some extent, most of his surroundings never say something like "hey, Rand, I get that should be really hard, tell me what's bothering you now, let's have some beer". ? Like give the guy some emotional support already! Prove me wrong if I'm missing something, bu…

  17. I don't know if anyone's remarked on this before, but re-reading tDR, I realized that Padan Fain had used "Great Lord" in front of Pedron Niall, and Pedron Niall hadn't noticed. Admittedly he was using it as a term of address for Pedron Niall himself, but it leaped out at me that Padan Fain had betrayed himself, and the person he was speaking to, hadn't noticed. What do people think of this?

Its been a few years but I did read the series twice and have a little going on in my mind. This is undoubtedly my favorite story but some things just do not add up. A big part of it is Moridin. He is suppose to be Rand from another time line that became forsaken yet early in the series Rand lives all of his lives and directly claims he never gave into the dark one in any life. Sure that is minor but the physical tie between the two also does not make sense. If Rand could cut his hand hurting Moridin why didn't killing him in the great hunt also harm Rand? Then there is the Shi Tan. A creature from outside of the pattern that is suppose to be evil …

This has been bothering me for 15+ years and I am finally asking it. The Heroes of the Horn all are known by the name that their thread was bonded to the horn, Brigitte, Gaidal Cain, Artur Hawkwing, etc. Then they have different names when they are spun out into the world. However Hawkwing calls Rand Lews Therin. Does this mean that Lews Therin is the original name of the Dragon? I had kind of always just assumed that it was his birth name in his previous reincarnation.

  20. Having re read the entire series now since Brandon's "big reveal" about Lanfer not being dead I have made the decision that, given it is not specified in the story, is not obvious to the reader and makes no sense in terms of the narrative that as far as I am concerned Brandon is wrong. The concept of the Death of the Author has always fascinated me when it comes to storytelling, it primarily focuses on the idea that whatever the Author's own meaning in writing what they write does not matter when it comes to the reader. It is how the reader interprets that work with the Author simply becoming a scriptor who puts words on a page. Now generally in Fantasy/Sci F…

  21. Hello! The TV show has prompted me to re-read vita of the series for the first time in ages while I was at my parents’ for the holidays. And I realised I have a fair few questions about the ending of the series, and I thought I’d pop round and ask! 1) We know the Bore is drilled in the AOL and sealed by Rand in AMOL. Do we then know the DO is active in the world only between these two events (and subsequent turnings), or whether the DO also gets freed / is active in eg the fifth age? i guess if the former it would make Tarmon Gai’don actually the LAST battle against the DO (though of course no beginnings or endings etc) 2) slightly linke…

  22. Rand drove me nuts with his behavior though most of the books. I was especially irritated by Rand's negligence with Mazrim Taim. He gets many warnings about Taim and does nothing. Early on, I actually thought Taim was going to turn out to be a Forsaken in disguise, so I was wrong about that. But Taim ascending to Forsaken status is even worse. Rand allowed him to train the next generation of Dread Lords. The minute Logain came to Rand with essentially a final warning about Taim, Rand should have done something. Replacing Taim and company with a loyal Logain would have saved so many lives. I think if the author's intent was solely to create Dread Lords, …

  24. This is my umpteenth time reading The Dragon Reborn, but the first since completing the full series. I seem to be picking up more of the "behind the scenes" intrigue and Forsaken machinations this time around. But I'm also finding plot points that seem inconsistent to the rest of the books. Not sure if I should call them "continuity issues" or "plot holes." 😉 Not sure if these have been discussed before. I'm sure they have been, as the community has always been on top of such things. A few of my observations: - Why isn't Lan with Moiraine when she confronts Be'lal in the Heart of the Stone, despite saying he was going (and her acquiescing) in a…

  25. Started by Kalessin,

I'm doing a re-read of the WoT, and am getting stuck into tEotW, tacking our dynamic duo Rand and Mat all the way into Caemlyn. In Ch 39, Weaving of the Web, Rand thinks "Hyam Kinch had talked about strange shapes, and surely enough there had been a Fade back there." Except that I've gone through all the mentions of Hyam Kinch in tEotW, and he never mentions strange shapes, The Fade they almost run into, is in the last town before Caemlyn, talking to an innkeeper called Raimun Holdwin, before Almen Bunt talks to Rand and offers them a ride during the night, all the way to Caemlyn. And he mentions strange shapes in the night. "Things creeping about in the night…

  26. "Why? Why do you thirst for blood? Why do you desire it? Why do you want another to suffer? Why do you take someone else's breath away? Why do you shut their eyes forever? Why?" - Words of a woman that died during the battle of Gaelin, in the year 977 of New Era. She supposedly worked in the camp of Cairhienin army as a prostitute. What is noteworthy is that she was supposedly literate, as in her hands she held a copy of an ancient text from ages long past, Ainulindalë. Survivors of Gaelin that knew her say this text gave her comfort in the darkest of days. "We have always been warriors! Always! To the beginning of time!" - spoken by Coulad…

  27. The age of legends is presented as a truly peaceful egalitarian period, where people wanted for nothing, there was no crime, no war. But on re reading the series I find myself wondering if RJ is giving hints that this isn’t strictly true. I am seeing now a world with a 2 caste system, those who channel and those who don’t. It appears channelers occupy every important role in society. They make decisions, they lead, they run the schools universities medical facilities. Channelers have everything. This isn’t surprising, every channeler will live far longer and so over time would become more and more in control not needing to retire due to age, or illness…

  28. Started by pig,

If Rand is revealed as alive, especially without the power to channel anymore, I feel like the Aes Sedai, Seanchan, etc would make his like suck. This concept is one of the main reasons why I'm sad that RJ never got to do his sequels.

  29. Started by Scarloc99,

Not sure if we ever saw this event but. If someone channeled Balefire to kill a person and then someone else channeled Balefire to kill that person. Is the first balefire undone, even if there is no pattern to recover?
