Hi! I am reading A Memory of Light and in chapter 14 Gaul mentions animal called „lopinginny“. Here: “All right,” Perrin said. “I’m going to take us to the Black Tower. We hunt a dangerous prey, a man named Slayer. You remember Lord Luc?” “The lopinginny?” Gaul said. Perrin frowned. “It is a type of bird,” Gaul said. “From the Three- fold Land. I did not see this man often, but he seemed to be the type who talked big, but was inwardly a coward.” I would like to ask – does the name „lopinginny“ mean something? I mean – there are many fictional animals in WoT. Some of them have names like „blacklance“ or „boar-horse“ (e.g names that actualy means someth…

In LoC: chapter 22 when Mat is on the march towards Tear, he is attacked by a group of Aiel. he later finds out that they got there by a gateway. now, who sent them there? my first guess would be Sammael although it could very well be any of the Chosen. would Taim do something like that? can he even do that? and also, were they Shaido Aiel, or Darkfriend Aiel. and completely unrelated but similar. in LoC: chapter 46 one of the Salidar Aes Sedai in Caemlyn is attacked by Aiel in an alley and is then told to stay away from Rand. we know Rand didn't send them, so who did? and for what purpose? to actually make them back away or to piss them off? My f…

in which book i can`t recall (now i am reading 9th) there was a wise young man in the library spent all his time on searching over there (and Rand was expecting some important information from him, i can`t recall what that was either) and one day a forsaken brings an unearthly beast and kill him. do you know the reason? and in which book it wiil be explained?

  4. Title says it all. Mine is the amount of sexism. Seriously, it caused me to put the book down on several occasions, and after I read The Way of Kings I realised how childish it made the characters seem. All of them, seriously. It had me fuming at some points.

Throughout the WoT, hundreds of characters have come forth. Some have enticed us. Some have irritated us. And some have literally sent us to sleep. These characters have been the work of genius from Robert Jordan, something which is very difficult to do. Even Malazan or LoTR could not develop such attachment to the character. (LoTR is still my favorite series, but it focused too much on Aragorn, Sam, Frodo and Gandalf to earn attachment for others) However, one of the characters that actually stood out for me is Perrin Aybara. Now I know how others in the forum feel about him. A whiner who should have taken things up headstart, a selfish person who was ready to de…

  6. Hi there! This is my first post here at Dragonmount, but I've been a fan of the Wheel of Time since 1993 (back in high school). Much of my drive to become an author came from reading these books. I wanted to lead with that, because I realize my post may come across as negative. I've been re-reading the series since March, and breezed through the first six books again. Those have always been my favorites, and to be honest I disliked the series from that point. I have a very good friend who also loves the series, but he is more forgiving of the later books. He asked me why I disliked them, and because it had been so long since reading them I didn't have an a…

Good evening Dragonmount, I am new to the forums but not the WOT though I have only started reading it 3 years ago I still haven't finished it. The farthest I got was half way into Book 7 and I've decided to re-read the series. So now to the topic the character I HATE the most of this series is Nynaeve I just cannot stand her she thinks she knows everything and is quick to judge folks and control people. Whenever a chapter starts with her the whole time reading I just wanna skip her story part. For my sake I hope she changes because it's murder for me to read about this female dog. Please tell me who u hate the most, have a good night Dragonmount :)

(please keep in mind what book i'm in and dont spoil too much for me. :) ) ever read a book and instantly want to comment? basically thats what this is. what moments were you reading WOT and did stuff like this: i'm nearing the end of the great hunt and just totally almost went 'i knew it!' when liandrin was revealed as black ajah. totally called it. but.....no one in my house reads it so i almost looked really silly. but still CALLED IT!

Well the whole "weird thing" with Tuon (Order) is that she is Mat's opposite (Chaos). Mat was only overprotective of Elayne in Ebou Dar because he had made a promise to Rand to get her safely back to Caemlyn. A promise I might add that the girls used to manipulate him to going to Ebou Dar in the first place. Mat only went to save them in Tear also because of a promise he made to deliver Elayne's letter to her mother. Mat's "complaining" is what endears him to most people. No matter how loud or how often he complains about having to do something, there is absolutely no hesitation in doing it. Mat is the bad boy, rebel with a cause and it's no secret he was one of…

In this thread I will be taking a critical look at the Old Tongue and how we can use it as a functional language instead of a smattering of vocabulary. /\ —————<•>—<§>—<DISCLAIMER>—<§>—<•>————— Some of this will rely on conjecture. These points of conjecture are not intended to claim status as canon from the Wheel of Time franchise. Old Tongue grammar is not a fixed and known entity, though there are many solid concepts. There are some holes in the grammatical and syntactical structur…

  13. Or, she's another victim in the very long line of fizzled out characters? Why is this bothering me so? Because I like her attitude, ambition; her hunger for revenge at any cost - she's not just making an excellent evil character, she reminds me of my younger self in a way. Nobody told me (when I was needed it most) that to reach my then goals, I'm not in the possession of enough IQ, EQ, virtues, skills etc. It would have been very good, but never happened. So, I had to learn it in the hard way. When Temaile says that "You have never known how high to lift your eyes. ‘Who reaches for the sun will be burned.’" I get that feeling that she (or rather Jordan) judg…

Note: Even though the series has been concluded for years, I just joined this forum and am not sure if I should be avoiding spoilers. So I'll play it safe and be obtuse about the details... So my son is reading the series for the first time. And he's near the end of Lord of Chaos. At this point, there are some Aes Sedai who have a certain main character as a prisoner. Every day, this character is beaten using flows of air. So I have to ask... how in the world does this not violate the three oaths? We know that *some* of these AS are black sisters. But some are not. How can they pull this off? Surely this constitutes using the power as a weapon. My wife m…

I'm intrigued by the Three Arches Ter'angreal that's used to test Novices and Accepted in the White Tower. Sheriam Sedai told Nynaeve, "It will bring you face-to-face with your greatest fears." Naturally, I wondered what are my own greatest fears, and how would I respond to them inside what seems to be equivalent to the Star Trek Enterprise's Holodeck. When it comes to Nynaeve, however, her first scenario was a battle with Aginor. Her second was seeing the Two Rivers fall into disarray without her being there as Wisdom. And her third was a possible future as the wife of Lan and mother of three children. The first I can see as a fear, but is being chased by one…

Hello guys, New to the series, and this forum. I'm working my way through the series for the first time. Currently on book 13. Anyway, my question is about printed editions. I encountered a number of issues in print in my various hard copies that I wanted to ask about. Misaligned pages, with left/right edges of words into the spine of the book, forcing me to break open the spine to read it. Off-axis printed pages. Top and bottom lines not parallel to cut pages Inconsistent Print contrast, making the book hard to read in some lights. Some lettering is too thin. 2 different hues of pages in one of my books. 1/2 of one book is white, while the bottom half is m…

  17. Could the forces of Light still have won if Gawyn hadn't gone off to fight Demandred? Min's viewing made it sound like he had a choice given to him by the Pattern to do the right thing, but afterward it looked as if the Wheel hinged on him screwing up.

Here's something fun that should provide some discussion. So, I had this idea in my head since last night while listening to the audiobooks. Tuon and the court are impressed once Elaida stops begging and crying and creates a Gateway for them. It would be a simple matter for her to escape her Seanchan captors while making a gateway. Either the suldame or Elaida steps through first and she simply releases the power, thus severing the leash and destroying the a'dam Ter'angreal. This should work as long as she doesn't think about using the gateway as a weapon to kill her suldame, just severing the leash. Damane are quick to release the power so as not to displease their…

Ok, so this has been bothering me ever since my first reading of tWoT. Is Egwene's story arc heavily edited by the fact that Gawyn unknowingly caught her in a dream? Multiple times in that passage she reflects on the fact that there are two Egwene's within her. One is herself, and the other is the one that is reacting in the script that Gawyn is performing in his mind as he dreams. Eventually, even that part of Egwene that was created from the dream speaks to her. She asks the true Egwene about her fear, as if confused. They both love Gawyn, so why is she fighting so hard? The two end the passage merging, and Egwene embraces the fact she loves Gawyn. Gawyn…

Maybe a of a spoiler here, if you haven't finished Gathering Storm. So stop if so Doing my first listen of the books on audiobook and I just noticed something I hadn't before. The Great Hunt, ch 5 I think. Moraine and Suiane discussing how if an amyrlin is stilled they must be kept on a servent becuase who could rally around someone who's cleaning dishes? Really nice foreshadowing for Egwene. It's unreal how much of that there is in the books. What's your favourite bit, that's not mine but it's my favourite so far in book 2 of my reread/first listen (skipped book 1) First post in years!

I finished ToM last week. And something hit me as it was all sinking in. While Avihenda is going through her vision about the aiel (which is the best part of the book), she talks about the seanchan building a path for their special carriages that moved on their own, made of big metal pieces too big to pry up using big nails. Took me a little while, but she was obviously talking about a railroad. A railroad across the waste. And I thought that was pretty cool, since that guy in camelyn in modern times was just on the breakthrough of steam engine tech. This would be a natural step forward in any world... ...except one with magic. And raken. Please explain to me …

I don't know if anyone else has noticed this... Two Rivers folk seems to have some parallels to the Dwarves from Lord of the Rings: - Both Two Rivers folk and LOTR Dwarves are described as very stubborn - Two Rivers folk are descendants of Manetheren, which in the Old Tongue means "Mountain Home". Dwarves in LOTR are well known for building kingdoms in mountains. - The Last King of Manethere was Aemon son of Caar son of Thorin. In The Hobbit, Thorin Oakenshield was the leader of the Dwarves, and the exiled King of Erebor These are the most obvious parallels that I noticed while re-reading TEOTW. What do you think? (Interesting thought: if Aiel are Elves,…

So is it ever confirmed anywhere (like in the companion or something) that Olver is Gaidal Cain reborn? Or is that just something that's obviously true that's just a wink-wink moment between the author and the reader? Also, on the topic of reborn heroes, what WAS the horn of Valere? Like, was it a ter'angreal from the age of legends? Was it something that aes sedai actually created for some reason, even though there was no way in the AOL, or was it some ter'angreal that was created specifically for the dragons prophecies to be fulfilled, like the eye of the world, and Calandor? Or whas it some mystical object that operated outside of the OP, like dreamwalkers or mins …

  25. I just started reading the books because I love the sci-fi/fantasy fiction genre and heard that this series would be getting its own TV Show. I finished book 1 and am halfway through book 2, and find the 3 boys to be almost unbearably stupid/annoying. Do they ever improve or do they remain stupid/incompetent for the sake of the cheap and easy generation of conflicts/plots in the story? If they do improve and become less annoying, at what point does it happen? I don't know if I could handle another 12 books of annoyingly stupid characters bumbling around like they're still fresh off the farm with an IQ of 1. I certainly hope that the tv show manages to cast charismatic act…

  27. Started by Rooish,

I feel like this is one of the most weird and out of the blue parts of the series. Yes I know Aviendha and Elayne were doing the weaving, and set the Warder bond around Min and Rand. But as far as I know, this is the only time a non-channeler has been able to have a Warder, and the only time someone has been able to create a Warder bond between two people that aren't themselves. Did anyone else find this moment weird? How exactly did it work? Was this kind of bond ever mentioned as possible anywhere else in the series?

  28. Something that's been bothering me for the last few books as I'm finally getting through AMoL: the whole "resting a hand on their sword" thing. They seem to talk about that as if it makes them intimidating, as if they're saying "I could draw this right now, or at least I'm thinking about it." They even say this explicitly in ToM where they mention that guy showing his kandori commander respect by resting his hand on his sword, because it showed that he considered his commander worthy enough to be a threat. And when that one borderlander king was asking rand the important question at Far Madding, he has his hand resting on his sword, and it said something to the effect…

I'm new to the series, just started Winter's Heart, and I think world events would have been much more peaceful if Rand had altered his journey slightly. At the start of TDR, Rand bolts for Tear because he's dreaming about Callandor. But what if the Pattern had pushed Rand to Rhuidean before Tear? Essentially, this would just change the order of books 3 and 4, but it drastically lowers the body count leading up to Tarmon Gaidon. And this is all because of Couladin. I'm sure the Forsaken were bad people back in the day, but Couladin harms the 3rd Age population of Randland WAAAAAY more than any of the Forsaken so far (I'm only on Winter's Heart). Let's say at th…

I'm not a history buff, I can barely remember a few things from HS. When Perrin states that he studied SEVERAL books of history what does he mean by it? They are basically peasants (but they can read and write) in a very little village far from the world. What kind of education did a peasant have in the 16-17th century? Or is this an error? (For example blacksmiths are not bodybuilders, no, they are not.)
