I am re-posting all of my old posts in an topic that is now gone, (lost with the move to the new website), note that I have done some editing just to make it more readable. I didn't change my theory's or my predictions... or at least as far as you know :P. I will start a new topic today for my first read through of Mistborn: The Well of Ascension.

  11. Tor.com and Brandon Sanderson have teamed up to launch a scavenger hunt they're calling "The Great Hunt." The basic idea is that Brandon will hide clues at various bookstores on his book tour for The Way of Kings, his latest non-Wheel of Time novel which is now available. Each one of these clues will be a small part in unlocking some exclusive "prize" related to Towers of Midnight. Here's what Tor.com says about the contest: To unlock it, fans will have to hunt down the many unique digital codes, printed on the back of Wheel of Time bumper stickers that Brandon will hide inside copies of The Way of Kings along each stop on his tour. (Which kicks off tonight!) …

I'm not sure how many out there are actually interested in this, but there is a free to play online game called Aika (it's a Korean one in its U.S. open beta) that isn't too bad, and they have a decent guild system in it. Point being, I have finally rallied enough support to open a Wheel of Time guild named WoT-opia, so if anyone plays Aika, or is interested in playing it, there is a possible WoT connection if you want it.

  13. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, the rumors are true. DM 8.0 is going to launch sooner, rather than later. 8.0 will include a full site redesign, new forum software, new blogging software and new gallery software. You will have ONE login that you will use for the entire site and you'll have the option of using your Facebook or Twitter credentials to login. We're going to be launching the new site in time for Dragon*Con, which takes place Sept. 3-6. That will also be the weekend the live action TOWERS OF MIDNIGHT trailer premiere. We'll probably be doing some fun contests on the site that those of you not attending the convention will be able to participate in and have a c…

  14. A comment by Barid Bel Medar over there across the way in The General WOT Discussion Forum about ''Bad Guys and Fantasy'' and ''what can you expect - the good guys always win'' really got me to thinking. And when I do THAT, my head hurts, so I figured I better get it out ...Yeah...Sadly, all too often ''Bad Guys'' are portrayed as cartoonish, ineffective and destined to fail. It seems it is RARE that they ever really HURT Team Good. So...It got me thinking...Are there any qualitiy exceptions to this in Fantasy? A few I think Maybe: 1 Semirhage trying to make Rand kill Min ... The Forsaken have never really impressed me...but this was pretty nasty of Semi to…

I am assuming that many WoT fans are now also SanderFans, and are probably off reading the preview materials posted on Tor.com today. If any of you feel the need to discuss what you've read here, please do so in this thread. This way, all the spoilers are in one, easily avoidable place for those (like me) that prefer to wait and read the book all at once in August when it's released. You can find links to the sample chapters, as well as other material related to The Stormlight Archive series here: http://www.tor.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=blog&id=59417

  16. Now I'm aware of quite a lot where the hero is an "anti-hero" / Byronic personality, but I can't think of a single one actually written from an outright baddie's POV. (Which is very understandable, of course. To make it believable, you need to somehow justify (however loosely) the baddie's actions, and not many people are comfortable with that, and find reading about a scumbag as protagonist discomfiting or depressing.) So does anyone know of a good book (or even series!?) that explores this theme - the Last Battle as seen by the Forsaken, or the fight for Middle-Earth from the eyes of the Witch-King of Angmar, etc.

  17. Hi all! My company was recently hired to do a study involving middle and high school students' reading skills, and we need to choose a book for the participating kids to read. I'd love to hear (read) any suggestions you guys have that fit the criteria below. - Appropriate for 7th-8th grade reading level - Not commonly found in school required reading lists (i.e., most kids shouldn't have read it already) - Not exceedingly long (goodbye WoT ;)) - Main character(s) are male or both male and female (most participants will be boys) - Does not contain subject matter that might/would be objectionable to most parents (e.g., sex, drugs, magic/occult) Post s…

Who in our history makes you look back and think they may have been one. You know the sort, people of charisma and luck who seem to do the nearly impossible. Hitler is on this list, he made an entire country follow his mad belief, and survived so many assassination attempts that you have to wonder about it. Others might include Ghengis Khan, Gandhi, Mandella, Abe Lincon (though I dont think he was too lucky there at the end) and possibly Cleopatra

  19. Hey folks. I have been lurking around this site for many, many years but have yet to post. However, this I just had to share with some fellow wot fans... I recently recommended The Eye of the World to my 11 year old niece, Regan, who is an avid reader. Today, my sister (Regan's mom) sent me the following message: I asked Regan if she had started the Eye of the World yet, and she said she had read a bit, but didn't really understand it so far. "especially the part where the guy turns into a volcano". I told her I am pretty sure no one turns into a volcano. I can't wait til I can read the passage for myself. You know, I always DID think that prologue was a…

  20. I am interested. In my opinion, it is fairly strong right now. The 80s seemed to be dominated by one-dimensional (yet still fun) D&D type of books. Eddings and The Belgariad and Weis&Hickman and Dragonlance were huge then too. In the 90s I felt like Fantasy started to ''grow-up'' a little. Melanie Rawn, Tad Williams and Robert Jordan started turning out some series that really seemed to have...Depth...COMPLEXITY. The late 90s and Early 2000s seemed like the peak for me. I personally think it peaked AS A GENRE with A Storm of The Swords. I feel like it has been in a slump since then. The gap between KOD.COT - TGS (through, of cour…

  22. Did Gandalf really ''die'' as a result of his plunge with The Balrog? I always saw this as rather metaphorical...figurative, even. Gandalf The Grey...his time done...Gandalf The White now needed to finish the tasks of The Fellowship. Gandalf makes some comment (either in The Simillarion or TTT) about ''burning in heat'' which makes it sound like he was probably being tortured in some Hell-Like dimension ... I don't think he ever dies though. Boromir dies :( Also, what were supposed to be the main differences between White Guy Gandalf and Grey Guy Gandalf? I don't think even the most astute of readers were ever able to answer THAT question, lo…

I was just wondering what are your thoughts of Stephen King's Dark Tower series? What was your favorite book? Mine has to be a tie between Book II The Drawing of the Three and Book IV Wizard and Glass.

I don't know if anyone else has asked about this. I assume a bunch of you all have e-readers. I've just ordered one myself. Will probably take at least another week for me to have it in my hands. I have already started downloading books from Project Guthenberg. Now to the questions: What are your experiences, is the language outdated in those books; what books do you recommend, especially for the fan of fantasy/supernatural/the like; any other tips you like to share?

  26. Jake and Zoe have been married for a decade and decide to take a celebratory skiing holiday in the Pyrenees (not the Alps, as some advance cover blurbs are saying). They are caught in a monstrous avalanche, barely survive, and make their way back to their hotel only to find that the entire village has been evacuated. Cut off from the outside world, with every attempt to leave the village blocked by weather or strange twists in geography, the two of them gradually realise that something strange has happened, but is it a curse or a blessing? The Silent Land is the latest novel by Graham Joyce, the author of the excellent Tooth Fairy. Last year he achieved great success…

  27. Simple question so I'll keep it short. I've recently been looking at the fantasy series by George R. R. Martin called "A Song of Fire and Ice" and seeing as I'll be done with The gathering storm soon (Sigh, such short lasted joy) I will need something new to read. Simply put, is this series worth my time, and if I thoroughly liked series as The Wheel of Time, The Dark Tower, The Lord of the Rings (And everything that goes with it) will I enjoy this series to? Thanks for your time and responses. Edit: renamed title for discussion purposes.

  28. Okay, so about 4 years ago (maybe 5) i was reading a really good book that had at least 1 or 2 more coming out after it. It was good....that much i remember. What i don't remember however, were some of the specifics about the story line and nothing about the title or author. In large part because my oldest was just born around that time and i was totally sleep deprived. Anyway, after much deliberation, i decided to post on these forums, because here i know I'm surrounded by the biggest fans in fantasy around ;D : - book started off showing how the 'world' was divided into two areas- 'normal' areas and areas that were almost completely covered in either fog or …
