I used the one year of Hebrew school my mother bothered sending me to as a child to catch up on my sleep.

My family was never particularly observant, except around the high holidays, and I stopped considering myself Jewish about nine years ago.

Mostly it was learning what was expected of me on Yom Kippur that finally did it.

 

Did they make you grow a beard? Or is that just the Hassidics?

i grew up in a hassidic neighborhood in an antireligious family and went to "modern" orthodox yeshivah.

 

just too long to explain. not a happy bunch of memories.

The beard was too long to explain, gotcha. I grew up in a black suburb - wasn't another Jewish household for miles - so I can't really relate.

the hassidim treated us like worse than anyone, necause wewere jews not like them. they threw rocks at us, slashed out tires, tried to poison our dogs.

 

really not fellow travellers.
