it seems like some of these theories would work, but honestly you'd have to open a gateway VERY fast in order to use it to work against balefire.

 

Balefire is always a FLASH of white hot fire streaking toward something, and gateways usually take time to rotate into themselves, so either the gateway would have time to open and great, or the balefire would obliterate the weaves creating the gateway and take you along with it.

 

I just don't think gateways open THAT fast.
