I read sword of Shannara and was unimpressed. If I wanted lotr I've have picked up lotr.

The first 3 Shannara books are a little unimpressive, they pick up after that. They are important though if you wish to read the rest because they are like the history of the world.

How about picking up on Malazan?  I was thinking of reading Esselmont's Night of Knives then picking up where I left off in Deadhouse Gates (Chapter One >.>)
