I'm pretty sure that the greatest blademaster of all time killed plenty of fellows armed not only with staves or swords, but with spears, axes, pikes, clubs, maces, warhammers, morningstars, and Avtomat Kalashnikova 47s.

 

The point of the story was, in my view, twofold:

 

a. never, never, never underestimate your opponent, no matter how long he's been out of a sick bed or what weapon he's using

 

and

 

b. there's always a bigger fish. Just because he was the best - or at least most famous - blademaster of all time doesn't mean there couldn't be a farmer who was even better with his chosen weapon, or perhaps, on that day, just woke up with a little extra spring.
