So awesome - despite how it looks like a Pitch Black remake with new monsters and characters.

Yeah I noticed that and at first I was disappointed.

Then I remembered I really liked Pitch Black.

I'm ok with a rehashing of the same story.

My only question is, is this a prequel to chronicles, but a revisit to pitch black? or is this actually taking place after chronicles? I don't know much about the universe aside from the movies. (never saw the animated versions, or anything else.)

So just pondering if he 'lost' his 'throne'.

It's chronologically 3rd, set an unknown amount of years after CoR.  As to the losing of his throne, that's one of the big questions everyone hopes will be answered.  Supposedly Drago is in this one, so it's likely to be addressed at some point.  There's definitely a necromonger in the trailer.
