I edited your post to make it work. You have to put the text you want to be affected inside the tags.

 

The correct way to do it is H(sub)2(/sub)O(sup)3(/sup) with the exception of substituting the parentheses () with brackets []

 

The way you had it was H(sub)(/sub)2(sub)(/sub)0(sup)(/sup)3(sup)(/sup). It works best if you highlight the text you want to affect and then press the "sub" or "sup" button.
