I have always wondered what they may be as well. I instantly thought of a jet’s contrails but initially dismissed it because...how? However, on a recent re-read of the series and after abundant pondering I have a theory that would confirm that they are indeed jet contrails from either our current Age or a different Age where Jet engine technology was invented.
