so, I found a salsa group here, but they dance New York style - I was wondering if you could explain the difference?  It was something about the 2 beat, but the explanation wasn't clear to me whether it was an emphasis on 2, or start on 2 (like the sonne(sp?)).

Hmm. I think NY style is more mambo influenced and is danced on the 2. I can find more on it later as well but that is one of the bigger bits. Also compared to Cuban salsa style, NY salsa is often called linear as it is often danced more along lines than circular
