Had the same pc for 8 years, bought a new monitor and one graphics card over that eight years, grand total was about $250.00 USD. Meanwhile, it played things like the Witcher 2 (not on Ultra graphics or anything) which was notorious for breaking PCs on the higher settings. You can almost always buy "old" versions of things for cheap when new tech comes out. Granted, the whole experience is more expensive than consoles, but it's not as bad as people make it out to be.

 

Plus... my freedom to do whatever the heck I please on/with my system is priceless.
