Welcome one and all, The Red Ajah is proud to champion the International Woman's day, which occurs this year on Saturday 8th March with an International Women's Week event that will contain a number of different projects. This Daily Profiles thread is dedicated to those women we (that means: you and me) admire, find inspirational or noteworthy. Every day of this week, everyone is invited to post the profile of their special women. You are also welcome to discuss the women you (and your fellow participants) post. Everyone can participate in this, whether you are a White Tower member or not, and we welcome your contributions. At the end of the week, …

So I seriously have to ask - why are the seventh graders going to laugh if anyone messages you? Did you put up another weird noise for your e-mail or something? Or is it going to earn the messenger a harangue of cursing? Either way, definitely curious! Raeyn Waiting to Die Like the Cat Did

I collect coins of all kinds from all over the world, and as a big fan of Darwin the following from wikipedia caught my attention: The Perth Mint, Australia will launch a 2009 dated commemorative 1oz silver legal tender coin depicting Darwin, young and old; HMS Beagle; and Darwin's signature. Please let me know how much of my soul I'll need to ship to Austrailia to get one of these :D Really, I'll send money, money order or whatever you like, if someone would be so kind as to obtain one for me. Thank you, Bes

Hey, the Black Ajah is visiting again. Hi. We knitted these sweaters ourselves. Would you like one? I can assure you that they're evil, but only mildly. It's like a bit of spice in a curry - a little goes a long way. In fact, some of these sweaters are very little. Sweater-kinis, if you like. Perfect for sunbathing in winter. Anybody want one, yet? We do a good deal on bulk orders.

During the Week of March 14-20, please come join the Brown Ajah on their public board to celebrate all things chocolate! That's right - the third week of March is "American Chocolate Week." All over the States, chocolate stores are having sales and giveaways; many factories that are usually closed to the public will open their doors during this week to give free tours and samples. And after recent studies have shown the positive and healthful benefits that chocolate can bestow, there is no reason not to indulge! We encourage you all to join the Brown Ajah during this joyous cocoa-filled week in celebration! We will be hosting discussion threads, recipe swa…

I can't believe we are already in week three! Wow, time flies. This week, I want to invite everyone to fill this thread with information about a shelter near you. Let us know who the organization is, where it is located, and what kinds of things they need. Next week is the last week for our little service project, so let's make sure that we have as much information out to make it as easy as possible to donate locally! I'll come back and give a longer list of shelters in my area, but I'd like to start off with the shelter I work with on a regular basis. Texas Pawprints is primarily a cat rescue. Although we have been known to take in dogs, ferrets, birds, an…

Yes, I know it's already the 16th for most of you, but it's still the 15th over here, so there. ;) Okay, singles! The couples have had their fun, so now it's time for ours! The popular DM Cheer Up Singles Day celebration is back. Here's a little historical background on this holiday for those of you who were not around for the last few years. I created Cheer Up Singles Day when I was a sophomore in college. It depressed me to see how singles always seemed to get left out on Valentine's Day, and I wanted us to have our own holiday where we could feel loved and appreciated, so I created one. I began celebrating it with friends in college, then I used i…

I didn't want to forget the children in our Week two discussions. There really aren't a whole lot of children's shelters around. Once orphanages were shut down in the US, we got a new system and so now children either go into Foster homes through Child Protective Services or sometimes courts will allow their parents to send them to chlidren's homes run by religious groups. But some children do end up in group homes. And these group homes need all the same items as women's shelters and homeless shelters. Mostly children's homes need clothing and school supplies outside of the monetary donations. But the best thing that can be done for these children is to help th…

Here's a very worthy cause with which I am not very experienced. My grandmother used to talk about women's shelters a lot, so I'm abit ashamed to say that I've not yet gone the route of volunteering with one. This is one public service I am most ready to learn something about. Since I am not near as knowledgable in how I can help a women's shelter, I'm just going to talk about the few things that I do know and I'm hoping that those of you who have done this sort of work before can fill in some more information. Other than monetary donations, I think the biggest help a women's shelter can recieve is clothing donations. Many of the women in these shelters had…

It's week two of our little service project and I'm going to start off the discussion with the kind of shelter I know the Most about - Animal Shelters. By the by, there will be a different thread for each kind of shelter we can think of. If anybody wants to lead a discussion on a particular shelter they have experience with, let me know and I'll start the thread for you. So, Animal Shelters. Just about every town has an animal shelter or rescue or person who helps wayward animals. Some shelters are funded by the local government and some are not. In my city, most are not. However, I hear that in some countries, all shelters are fully funded, WOW! As someon…

I think that when the majority of us hear the word "shelter," we all immediately think of either Animal or Homeless. I think of the two, the Homeless shelters get the least love and attention. This is another arena that I am not that familiar with, so I would be very grateful if anyone who is currently active in helping Homeless Shelters would add their expertise. Homeless shelters need lots of things. Not only do they need monetary donations, but they also need physical and time donations. One of the biggest things needed I can think of as far as physical donations is blankets and coats and other clothing. Many homeless shelters have rules about how many pe…

I have been asked a few times what it is exactly that librarians do all day (aside from reading). By way of answering this question to a degree, here is my current to-do list (and you can see that there are additional items further down which you'd have to scroll to see): You can click on the image if you actually want to see what is on the list ;) I will just add that probably 85% of what's on this list is stuff I've added myself. And there are of course daily processes I have to run, but they aren't on this list! Of course, my job is very different to some of the other Librarians' jobs, as I am a Systems Librarian ;)

I am going to a movie tomorrow with a friend, as it's Australia Day and we are gonna go and check out the piddly Freo fireworks (instead of the ridiculously huge city ones where all the yobbos seem to go). Anyway, I don't know which movie we should see (my friend doesn't care, neither do I really), so can you help? *g* The 3 movies listed above are the only options that are around the right time of day for what we're planning, and for where we want to go (i.e. not far from home) *g* and it doesn't matter that they are rather different genres all 3, as neither of us cares at all what movie we see *g*

Hi everybody! Well, it's finally February and so the Gray Ajah gets to host Service Project Month. While we're always proud of our projects we've done over the past three years, this one is special because for the first time we're making the project an actual Event within the White Tower. I'd love to see lots of people joining us in our project. This year our theme is "Support your area Shelters." Over the next month we'll be talking about different kinds of shelters and what they do and what kinds of help they need. Please feel free to jump in at any time and offer your two cents to the discussions which will start next week. But for now, let's just sit do…

I apologize deeply for having dropped entirely off the face of the DM/WT planet for a loooooooong time. There's been too much going on for me to go into detail about exactly why I've been absent (outside of "too much going on", that is :) ), but I thought I'd drop in and say hi and see what's going on. Sadder, older, more tired, yes I am; I hope everyone's been doing well.

Right so, as most people not under rocks know, the UK has been BURIED in the good white stuff this week, and even more incoming the next couple of days. Of course, me being a Texas girl, this means I got to make my very first snowman. Though to be fair, it's more like a snow queen (note the silly snow hat): Anyways, you get a better idea from the 'aerial' (out the window) shot: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v130/Raeynsedai/Weather/05%20February%202009/05Feb027.jpg[/img] Anyone else having fun that they want to show off? Nobody is sledging into barbed-wire fences, riiight? PS: full album of today's snow fun is here: http://smg.photobucket.…

Hey all, I am having a wisdom tooth pulled in about an hour so I am not sure how much I will be around today and maybe tomorrow depending on how I feel. For the people in my Intro to RP class I apologize and we will get it going again soon. I know there are a few not done with lesson 1 yet, so hopefully when I get back everyone will be done and we can start lesson 2. *waves* Claire

So, I was trying to find an old bio and I found a Spymaster report I wrote for Justen way back when I was an accepted. Here are some selected passages: ~~~~~~ Kat was attacked by a passionate Sudanese man…he kissed her on the lips and whispered sweet nothings in her ear…till she whapped him over the head with her attaché case. For those inquiring minds and nosy people out there, here is a transcript of the conversation, recorded by an informant of mine: Sudanese Man (SM): “Oh my dahhhlink…come to the casbah with me…” Kat: “Um..how about No?” SM: *ignores her statement and keeps kissing her* Kat: “Hey, would you mind stopping that? You are smearing m…

Yay! having a day off from work in January. Boo! having it off during the coldest month of the year and the heater is on the fritz. It's 61 degrees in here, which is quite a bit colder than I like to keep things. I'm curled up with my laptop, a space heater and I've been eating soup. I would be baking something, but if I tried to make bread it wouldn't rise properly and I'm completely out of eggs. And yes, I know 61 is ridiculously warm for some of you. I don't care. I live in Georgia. Winter is something that happens to other people.

Okay, some of you know that I have a foodie blog I update occasionally. It's mainly recipes and reviews of places I've eaten at. I started it because I noticed my LJ was getting over run with posts about food and I didn't want my friends to think I was fat. It's here for anyone that wants to look at it. http://northsidefood.blogspot.com/ So anyways, I'm just getting home, right? It's been a hellish day and I've been at a bar for about five hours killing the pain of teaching middle school with ridiculously strong Jack and Cokes. (Apparently they only waved the Coke bottle at my Jack before serving.) I go home and start checking things, with no real intention of writi…
