Hi all. I am doing research for a fantasy novel as a love letter to some of my favorite authors. As I am drawing on different magic systems for inspiration in constructing my own, I have some questions related to the OP system in WoT; - Magic amplification and Angreals; So I understand the Angreals to be additive, what I'd like to know is the mechanics of how an angreal amplifies the source from a more technical perspective, but also how such amplification can (do they in WoT?) affect different weaves. In some instances, it seems to work with raw saidin or saidar, and just goes boom? But then we have other examples in the book where cha…

Can someone help please? I'm looking for the part where Perrin was inspecting wagons, or maybe smithing parts for a wagon. He was concerned about making it right - even though no one would ever see it. Any idea about which book/chapter this occurred? Thank you.

On another re-read of Winter's Heart - I'm in the Chapter What the Aelfinn Said: And I've stumbled on where Mat bumps into and has to fight Tuon. One of the sentences reads: "He had quick hands, the quickest Thorn had ever seen according to the old gleeman, but it was all he could do to ward her off, forget about grabbing her." Is it safe to assume that Thorn is just a typo for Thom? I don't have the Companion Guide handy so I wasn't able to look up Thorn and see if it was a character I missed. Is anyone able to verify this error in their own copy? I've attached a screenshot to prove I'm not crazy, HAHA.

This is an interesting idea about the nature of the Pattern. In KOD, corridors switch and rooms in a palace shift to different places. This is attributed to the pattern unravelling due to the DO's touch. Now, how does nature (or in this case the Pattern) see this? To the Wheel, when we build a castle, we move a bunch of raw materials from one place and assemble it in an orderly manner in another place as we desire. Why should the Pattern recognize a castle as anything other than a bundle of raw materials shifted from their original place? This led me to think that corridors and roads shifting doesn't seem to make much sense. Maybe, if a corridor suddenly ab…

I like that Egwene is going against Rand trying to stop him breaking the seals and Perrin fighting his inner wolf I have enjoyed the last five books so far better than the start of the series I don’t remember Perrin killing that Gererals father though the reason the white cloaks are after him

1- Rand is pushed by the wind in Fal Dara practicing with Lan. 'Strange things happen this close to the blight' This is perhaps the first sighting of mysterious ability Rand taps to light the pipe at the end of the series 2- While in the Portal Stones world Ishamael -as Ba'alzamon tells Rand something like 'she's not strong enough to protect you, she's never strong enough' We assume this is about Egwene but perhaps this is the first reference to Nakomi. Keep in mind these are two of the myserties that Sanderson has famously said he can't answer 3- This one is not really true but must be shared Just …

I think Nynaeve is arguably the second most important character in the series, here's why: Saved Egwene (future Amyrlin) from the Seanchan. The first in the series to use balefire. Bests Moghedien in Tanchico. retrieves male Adam, and seal. from out from under Lindrin's nose. Captures Moghedien. Instrumental in killing Rahvin. Heals Stilling. Beats block, marries Lan, uses bowl of winds, and saves Kin and Wind Finders from Seanchan. Cleanses Taint. Rand was channeling Saidin, but was passing it through Nynaeve' s Saidar filter. Heals madness caused by taint. Saves Rand in Bandar Eban Keeps Rand's head f…

Starting this thread after mistakenly sidetracking a thread in the show forum Trying to comprehend the seemingly universal acceptance here that the Cauthon/Tylin arc supports the conclusion Mat was raped by Tylin and that the interactions between them are comparable to what Morgase suffered at the hands of Valda The origin and discussion of this contention eluded me in the moment, and I have to educate myself on the arguments in favor of the position. Other than the interview with Harriet mentioned in the other thread, would greatly appreciate anyone pointing me to supporting contentions .......................... In short, I disagree wit…

They are probably the single worst thing about the Wheel of Time for me. But I have to wonder what RJ wanted from this group. On the face of it, they're pretty generic. You have a powerful secondary threat being manipulated by the primary enemy and the heroes goal is to get them on side. The Geth from Mass Effect are a good example of this. So as I was reading and introduced to them I assumed that the books would follow this pattern. We'd purge the corrupting characters, get rid of the evil practices like enslaving channellers and then they get to be awesome and help the heroes. This is not what happens. Instead, RJ has events transpire in which our heroes go…

I cant stand him. As a character on either side, I honestly feel that his entire arc (and all the sub arcs leading from it) could be removed (or even skipped) and it wouldnt affect the story at all. All the others from EF have distinct and specific arcs that lead them and others to TLB, but even with 'dealing with the prophet' section could be left out, chasing his missus all over randland doesnt further the story and if anything distracts from it. The only reason I noticed this was when he is on his 'Honeymoon' and is left out of an entire book (almost) and on my 3rd/4th readthrough every time I got to a new chapter with 'Perrin sighe…

Hi everyone, I'm new to the forum and the series, currently reading the third book, when Egwene is back to Tar Valon after the Thomas Head battle. I'm liking the book so far, but there is something bugging me regarding Tar Valon, Aes sedai, the Amyrlin Seat and the black ajah. I wanted to ask you if those are plot hole or I'm too early in the books, just what you think about it. The Amyrlin Seat is described to be the most respected and powerful woman, but she act as if on the verge of being overthrown, her servants will be surprised if she doesn't do exactly as expected and no Aes Sedai respect her. On the other side, she herself doesn't seem authoritative and …

I am just curious if any of you actually cried at any point in the series. I would love to hear about what did it for you. Obviously this would be a spoiler-centric thread. I made it to the final book and never did. I have four hours left in the audiobook so there may be moments ahead, but I finally had my first tears. Spoiler following I was quite surprised by this to be honest, but Siuan’s death was the first scene in the whole series that got my tears. I didn’t even realize how much I had liked her until that moment. And, to me, it was one of the bravest moments of the entire series. Granted I have four hours left so there could be more.

This may be a totally random observation, but whilst watching Disney's Mary Poppins film and I couldn't help but notice how similar Dik Van Dyke's opening monologue is to the the intro of every Wheel of Time book. "The Wheel of Time turns, and Ages come and pass, leaving memories that become legend. Legend fades to myth, and even myth is long forgotten when the Age that gave it birth comes again. In one Age, called the Third Age by some, an Age yet to come, an Age long past, a wind rose in the Mountains of Mist. The wind was not the beginning. There are neither beginnings nor endings to the turning of the Wheel of Time. But it was a beginning. Born b…

Is it just me, or would anyone else have preferred Logain to have been the one to kill Taim? I just think I would have felt a better sense of balance in that. One False Dragon serving the Light takes out the now-Forsaken False Dragon serving the Shadow who had forcibly tried and failed to turn him to the Shadow. There were plenty of other Dreadlords that Egwene could have "Flamed." Taim should have been Logain's to end. Thoughts?

One of the most underrated moments of the series is definitely Rand's campaign against the Seanchan in Altara. You never see it mentioned anywhere, although it's epic almost to the level of Dumai's Wells, with even more troops involved, and at least 4 full battles engaged. And not even mentioning the fact that it was the first major blow to the Seanchan army, bigger than the defeat at Falme. Here's an animated breakdown of the battles: https://youtu.be/gXzobNaJsW4

Having just finished a re-read, I've been pondering what comes next for these nations. Altara stands to gain much in the new order of things, what with actually having sovereignty over its entire landmass for once, and then having those borders locked in by the Dragon's Peace. But just how far exactly does Altara extend, and how much does that potentially isolate Ghealdan? Some maps I've seen show the land east of Garen's Wall as belonging to Altara, at least technically (and no towns to speak of), while others show it as Andoran and still others show it as unclaimed territory. But the same pretty, in-color official map we're all used to from LoC onward (that…

Hey everyone, What are your theories about breakbone fever? Is it a construct? If so, then did Aganor create it? If he didn’t, then who did? (It certainly seems like something he’d do.)

Doing a reread of the entire series and I currently just finished Natrin's Barrow and I was wondering... Spoiler Rand uses Nynaeve as a sort of test to see whether Ramshalan has compulsion and to see if the compulsion is gone after balefire... Only, when Nynaeve delves him the first time, she says that the compulsion weave is similar, though perhaps more subtle than the weave used on Kerb. How can she sense the nature and complexity of the weaves on Ramshalan if they were made by Halima using Saidin? And how could Halima's compulsion match Graendal's, with more subtlety? I've read the entire series a couple times, and may have forgotten some …

I have had a long relationship with WoT. It started around the time when Crown of Swords was released and I was about 12 years old. I have reread the first books many times in anticipation for the next release. But I got thrown off after Knife of Dreams where my life went into young adult hood and my priorities changed. I just reread the whole series and finally got the conclusion to this masterpiece. One thing on rereading the series as a 37 year old with a family of my own is that I have a different appreciation for some of the hardships. I can have another kind of empathy with parents watching children suffer or of Perrin losing his family. As a teen…

What if... In the beginning there was The Creator and The Dark One, two adversaries, more like two brothers, for sure two opossing forces of nature. Selflessness vs Selfishness. Stagnation vs Evolution. From the start bound in an eternal circle of creation and destruction, seemingly unable to break out of it. Eons would pass if time existed, until The Creator sacrificed itself and to became the Wheel of Time, changing the rules of their struggle, in a way becoming a prison for The Dark One as now in order to have everything it had to break the will the world itself. It was no longer a contest of the two, but The Dark One vs the world. As the ages came and went, they …

Does anyone know the fonts that were used on the original Wheel of Time (first edition) book covers? There's 1. the font for "THE EYE OF THE WORLD" and 2. a font (or maybe it's the same font in lower case) for Robert Jordan and then 3. the font for the back cover writing "The Wheel of Time turns and Ages come and go," etc. Super intrigued to find out about these three fonts if anyone has already managed to figure it out. Thanks for the help!

Can anyone explain why the Foresaken don't go hard after Mat's dreams they way they go after Rand's and Perrin's? I'm doing a reread and I'm wondering if I missed something. Rand eventually learns to ward his dreams, but that takes at least until The Dragon Reborn, and Perrin's dreams are protected by the wolves. But I never understood why the Foresaken don't get in Mat's head that way. Is it just too messy a place to be? Thanks!

At the beginning of the TGH when Rand is training with Lan on top of the tower, he has this weird air push him. Then later he feels eyes watching him making him nervous. Are those things ever explained? Is it Lanfear?
