And it came to pass in those days, as it had come before and would come again, that the Dark lay heavy on the land and weighed down the hearts of men, and the green things failed, and hope died.’ From Charal Drianaan te Calamon, The Cycle of the Dragon. In the Field of Merrilor the rulers of the nations gather to join behind Rand al’Thor, or to stop him from his plan to break the seals on the Dark One’s prison – which may be a sign of his madness, or the last hope of humankind. Egwene, the Amyrlin Seat, leans toward the former. In Andor, the Trollocs seize Caemlyn. In the wolf dream, Perrin Aybara battles Slayer. Approaching Ebou Dar, Mat Cauthon plans to …

  3. Not sure if this belongs on this part of the site but Brandon has just tweeted a few tidbits regarding AMoL as follows.... 1st tweet- I'm sorry I don't have more specific WoT posts for you--I know that Harriet prefers me to be more closed-mouthed. However... (more.) 2nd tweet- Maria from Team Jordan has finished her revision notes for the entire book, as has Harriet herself. So we're only waiting on Alan's notes. 3rd tweet- As he's playing "Great Captain" for me on AMoL, his notes are vital--and he needs to be detailed. When I get them, I can finish revising. All 3 tweets were within seconds of each other and posted about 10 minutes ago :D Silly little things…

I was thumbing through a copy (just glancing, really) of Dumas' The Three Musketeersat my local library, and noticed that there was a scene where a letter was in possession of one of the characters that granted its bearer the full authority of its author. That looked *awfully* familiar--rather like a device Jordan used in books 3 and 4 with the letter from Siuan Sanche. I wonder if Jordan picked that up from Dumas...

So I'm in the middle of another reread of the series and am currently about midway through CoT. One of the things that has struck me about this one compared to the others is the length of the chapters. I, like most people, use the chapters as a breaking point; if I have to do something that isn't immediately pressing, I'll finish the chapter and then go do it. I feel like I can't realistically do that for CoT simply because each chapter is so immense. Obviously a big part of that is the reduced number of storylines being followed in the book, what with Rand recovering from the Cleansing and many others waiting for the rest to catch up. But just for something to do, I deci…

Hey guys, i did not see a thread on Padan Fain, and thought I would start one because i think that he has a huge role coming up. I also wanted opinions on a poll, so i started this too. I personally think that he will kill Shaidar haran as he is known to kill myrrdrall and this would be his best one. I think he will also end up killing one of the Forsaken, probably Graendal or moghedien, but I think he will try to kill Rand and then someone else will come and save him. I think that in the end Padan fain will die. i also think that he will try to kill as many people as possible.

  8. So i was reading the ebook version of the great hunt. I dont know why i have never seen this when i have read the regular paper editions of the books but, in one chapter Verin says that she knows of 3 portal stones one of wich is in the waste. She then tells rand that she has only been to one of them and thats the one in arad doman. My question is how did she find out about the one in the waste and when did she find otu about it, and was she lying yet again when she said she had never been to it.

So from the book, I have concluded that setalle is a burned out Aes Sedai, correct me if wrong. However, I am curious on whether her name is an alias for someone important like the old dream ter'angreal studier or someone else. it would be really cool if she revealed herself and then was healed and had this really cool information on TAR. Anyways, just a theory. Discuss.

I realize most oddities seem to come from this book,as RJ was still "feeling" his way. Most ,if not all of us believe that Moiraine is on the side of the light. so are the following quotes just a quirk,or something more serious? In chapter 28 (Footprints in Air): "The Wheel weaves as the Wheel wills," Moiraine mumbled. "No eye can see the Pattern until it is woven." Earlier, in chapter 15(Strangers and Friends), Min talking to Rand says "She (Moiraine) says I see pieces of the Pattern." Anybody care to explain this seeming contradiction? I know Min is an obvious exception,but....??

Seeing as they never confirmed Mashadar was dead, as per BS' quote in the interview, do you think it will have a part to play in the last book? What I am thinking is that during the cleansing, maybe they way gate somehow opened up, cause god knows what kinda effect that much one power would have on things like that. So here is my theory. During the cleansing, when Mashadar or whatever was battling that taint, somehow it broke whatever it was that bound Mashadar to SL and it sensed that taint and Machin shin inside the ways and went after it. And seeing everything that happened there in the past was to fight the Dark One and all that, Mashadar's instinct to fight the s…

So, we've seen the Shadow turn up with all sorts of goodies from the AoL: the gholam, dreamspikes, random servant creatures, etc. Moridin in particular seems to have access to a lot of good stasis boxes, some of them presumably stocked by him in the AoL. But what are they? I always feel like I missed some sort of exposition bit about them, but I don't think I actually did. Considering the fact that they're only ever mentioned by the Forsaken, it would be easy to think they're a Shadow thing only - something to do with 'vacuoles' or whatever - but Graendal once seemed surprised that Moridin had 'found' so many when she couldn't find any decent ones, so that makes it seem u…

  14. Lan's charge is one of the Three Futile Battles that are aligorical to Authorian legend. The first being Maradon; a victory for the good guys and great for troop moral, but ultimatly pointless as the city was evacuated and all but destroyed anyway. The second is Lan's charge; it is impossible for him to acieve any kind of victory out of this and it can go either way; tragicly with the death of the remainder of the once-greak Malkeri kingdom and its king to no great puropse beyond signiling start of the Last Battle. OR (and far more likely) Sanderson tosses in an arse-pull with a last minute save probably by Logain and Alanna in some mannor which secures Tarwin's Gap wi…

A question has been posed to me about gateways, and though I'm pretty sure the answer is NO, I figured I'd ask here. Can you fix a Travelling Gateway to a moving object, such as the deck of a ship? The person I'm arguing this with says that because Deathgates are in motion, it proves the fact that a Gateway can move. Therefore, one should be able to fix it in place like any other weave. I argued that the opening and shutting of a deathgate is evidence of the things instability BECAUSE it is moving. Deathgates would be a far more effective weapon against shadowspawn if they remained open and just plowed a path through, rather than rotating open and shut and m…

  16. Apologies if this has been stated elsewhere (a distinct possibility), but a quick search revealed nothing. Count me as one who has been wanting more details from the Black Tower plotline for some times now (many books), and have speculated much on the goings on there. There has long been many references to the 13 x 13 trick throughout the books, particularly Dragon Reborn and Great Hunt, but we've never seen it done. We all have speculated that it might be happening at the BT, but the descriptions of the two channelers who seems the most likelky candidates, don't seem to match RJ's description of what happens via the 13 x 13 trick. However, they DO match another d…

Hi, been lurking around here awhile but finally decided to make an account. But anyways, on subject, I would like to know what you guys think the title color for A Memory of Light will be. What I mean is that every WoT books' title has a kinda color theme... New Spring has purple and gold, FoH orange gold, ToM white and red, tSR blue and white etc. Personally I'm thinking blue and green. Maybe yellow. I know, kinda a dumb topic but all this excitement is killing me.

So I was thinking Galad and Rand are half brothers right? Unless I'm confused they are. Galad always does what's right. Rand is ta-verin strongest ever. If it comes out and Galad realizes they are brothers and the right thing is to fight DO at TG would rands twisting of chance and Galad need to do right mean some link of sibling kinship will see the two in an epic sword fight with the two working together.

I think I have found out who Demandred is. I know, millions of people think that, but please listen. There are a few facts we know from comments of RJ and BS. 1. Demandred did not appear on screen in any book, except maybe TGS (for the quotes, see comment 24). 2. Demandred is mentioned in a book between one and 9. For the quote, see comment 30. 3. Demandred's RULE IS SECURE. He has power. He is in control anywhere/somewhere/everywhere. Another great change. I think It'll stay so until AMoL. With using "my rule is secure", you can get important evidence. Because he has (much) power. Enough to satisfy the Dark One. So hes has to control an army/country. The Borderla…

  21. Who gets too little credit, living or dead? Note I am not asking who will have a bigger impact than is assumed. Just who is/was more capable/powerful/knowledgable than is shown. My first thought was Be'lal. Only appears in one book(besides some dream-meeting, I believe), and only a chapter or two, at that. He doesn't succeed at anything he attempts. All his plans are foiled, and it doesn't seem like he had any plans beyond luring Rand to his death. On the other hand, he was counted as one of the greatest strategists in AoL, was in fact the leader against the DO before he turned. And in fact, with the knowledge he had (Ishy didn't see fit to give him insider in…

  22. Here's a new theory (new to me, anyway) inspired by the thread on Foreshadowing. There's been some discussion there as to whether Mat's penchant for wrapping scarves around his head in the early books foreshadowed his half-blindness. The pertinent examples of this (that I could find) are Chapter 32 of The Eye of the World, in which Mat is blinded by lightning and bandages his eyes with a scarf, and Chapter 24 of The Shadow Rising, in which Mat wears a scarf around his head as they travel into Rhuidean. I always thought this behavior, which as far as I can tell is unique to Mat, foreshadowed his half-blindness (along with Mat's cry "He took my eyes!" after waking fro…

  23. Yep! We got one for the light, so here's one for the Shadow. And I believe we may very well some dark-siders jump ship to the Light. The top on my list, and most others, I think, is Cyndane. But aside from her, I think Moridin could possibly do so as well. Now while I think it is his merging with LT, some people think this new, philisophical Rand is because of his link with Mori. So if this is in fact the case, why shouldn't Mori be effected likewise? Like maybe gaining Rand's insight and hope for a better future? Who are yall's picks?

So, what do you think are the finest moments for each of the major characters? First up, I must make clear that I do not mean fighting or destroying the most Shadowspawn, nor most awesome in battle at all. I am talking about morally, what moment shows the goodness of the Character? Any idiot could kill Shadowspawn or lead and defeat armies if they have enough resources and power. Rand can blast anyone out of the sky when he wants to, his power is immense. But his power does not make him a Hero. It is not his strength in the OP that makes him the Dragon Reborn, saviour of the world. It is not ability in battle that makes a character worthy of praise. To m…

  25. I am sure that this topic has come up before but I couldn't find it using the search so I figured may as well create this topic. Which of the Westlands would you live in taking into account culture, values, threats, etc? For me it came down to two, Shienar and Murandy. I think I would enjoy the purpose of Shienar and the values they carry with them. Though, I'll admit, it would not be the best place to raise a family, something about their culture and customs draws me to it. On the other hand I think I would also enjoy Murandy. Everyone loves and underdog and there doesn't seem to be a bigger one in the Westlands. Also, they seem to be a culture I would enjoy as well.…

Just wondering if anyone has ever dreamed about the series. Last night I had a weird dream that I was able contact people in T'a'r via an i-phone app. LOL! Anyways, that just got me thinking. I have had dreams as well, like me being the Dragon reborn or the Amyrlin Seat visiting my home and turning out to be someone I know irl. And there was one where I was playing some strange game with Mat that was a cross between dice and 52 card pick up but I could find all the cards and the ale tasted like lemonade.

First time reading through the series and I'm reading at a breakneck pace for myself (started the series in February and just started A Path of Daggers) so, understandably, I'm anticipating missing some more nuanced pieces of information or forgetting some minor characters but, in A Crown of Swords, I realized I had been operating under a hilariously incorrect and huge assumption: The Seachan and Atha'an Miere are the same people. I dunno if it was the Aiel talk about clans and septs or the multiple factions throughout the novels but I assumed that the Seachan were just some sort of militaristic faction of the Atha'an Miere looking to conquer. I don't really remem…

That said.. there are some obvious Sanderson lines, that seem to be out of place. So, i'd be interested to hear from readers, what lines in the book, have you looking up to the heavens, clenching your fist and screeching: "Sannnderrrrsonnnnnnnnnnnnn" !!!!!!!!!
