Over the past decade, The Dresden Files has turned into one of the big success stories of the urban fantasy genre. Set in modern-day Chicago, it follows the fortunes of Harry Dresden, a wizard-for-hire who offers his services to those in need (and who preferably can pay him). Mixing up elements of the supernatural with a detective story format, the series has proven successful on both sides of the Atlantic with ten further books in the series published and a short-lived TV adaption proving a cult hit a couple of years back. Storm Front is the first novel in the series. The perpetually cash-strapped Harry Dresden is given some financial relief when two cases land on h…

Just reconnecting. I've been away from the site for quite a while. Too busy having my roof blown off in a storm, working and studying. Also trying to get through to teenagers that if your teachers don't see your work - they can't mark it - Dah! OMG so much has been happening!! Movies, three part books and the like. Can't take my eyes of things for a second!I am sooo excited about the next book. Best thing is I will be finished my studies when it comes out. Well must go and write an assignment. I am definitely going to keep a closer eye on things - between assignments that is. See you all. christe1602

This book has an interesting history behind it. Back in 2006 movie director Guillermo del Toro started developing a TV series with Fox. For unknown reasons the series never happened, but del Toro retained ownership of the scripts, story outline and character arcs he'd spent some time and effort creating. With his movie calendar fully booked up for the next decade, he clearly wouldn't be able to bring the project to the screen by himself either, so he decided to team up with thriller writer Chuck Hogan to turn the story into a trilogy of novels. With the story and character arcs already conceived, the writing proceeded pretty quickly. The first book, The Strain, is release…

I don't know if this has been discussed before. But if the Tuatha'an are related to the Aiel as we know they are and the Aiel has channelers amongst them, then surely the Tuatha'an do too. I can't remember if there is any mention in the books of this or what happens to them. Do they go off to be AS? Does anyone have any idea?

The first David Gemmell Legend Award shortlist has been announced. The nominations are: Last Argument of Kings by Joe Abercrombie Heir to Sevenwaters by Juliet Marillier The Hero of Ages by Brandon Sanderson Blood of Elves by Andrzej Sapkowski The Way of Shadows by Brent Weeks Disappointing not to see Paul Kearney's The Ten Thousand on there, as it was both the best book of 2008 (although there wasn't much between it and Last Argument) and the most 'Gemmell-like' book on the list by miles. Also surprised not to see Peter Brett's The Painted Man, as he'd picked up a lot of praise and momentum along the way. My shortlist vote will definitely be going to Ab…

So I'm on facebook and see all these notices about The Gathering Storm and tEotW comic. So I think, "I'd better head to Dragonmount.com for all the latest and most accurate WoT news." So I come to DM and see they have no new news about WoT. Are boss and lord jason dropping the ball? I hope not.

So, I've read The Wheel of Time (1-11) twice now in the last year since a friend of mine told me about it, and have loved every page both times. I got turned onto "The Song of Ice and Fire" (or Fire and Ice ... whichever) by George R.R. Martin and have read all four books that have been written in that series so far ... and loved them. Now, I'm looking for more suggestions on what series to try out next. Since you folks have pointed me in the right direction before, I thought I'd start here and see if anyone has a suggestion. I've already read the staples of fantasy ans Science Fiction (Tolkien, Asimov, Herbert, Bear) as well as most of R.A. Salvatore's stuff …

I have two additional projects that need doing that do not require so much technical experience. Project #1: I need you to go to a specific url and save all the smilies, zip them to a file and send them to me. Project #2: I need someone who can read HTML (a little asp can't hurt but is not required). You will be tasked with converting an old DM6 page into plain text with HTML formatting. Once you start with a given format you will be required to stick to it throughout the project. We want it too look uniform even if more than one person does the initial coding. If you are interested please let me know by email at matalina@gmail.com which project you …

I got led to this by its mention of Wheel of Time mud, but the staff over at GeekSix wrote about Wheel of Time and its use as a theme in text based multiuser dungeons (muds). Just thought I dropped it here. I know a couple of them over there are Wheel of Time fans and occasionally do post about happenings and thoughts on the WoT world. http://www.geeksix.com/?p=1785

The big fight between all the staff and the test forums released today are all a fun joke that has left some people scrambling and others laughing. You may rest assured that I am not banned, Emperor did not quit, and nobody is angry with Kivam. Now, DM 8.0 will be coming, just not for some months yet, todays incarnation is a mockup that I masterminded and Claire built for me. All of the staff were on board for this, and many even joined in. The link to them, if you'd like to take a look at what we were fighting over is this: http://dragonmount8.musemarketing.net/index.php April Fools everyone, and have a nice day!

Neal Asher is a British SF author born and raised in the Essex town of Billericay. He is the creator of the Polity Universe, in which all but one of his novels are set at different points in history. The basis of the Polity is that humanity and his AI creations have unified together to form a stable government that has rid humanity of war, but there are still many dangers in the Galaxy that must be confronted. Shadow of the Scorpion is Asher's eleventh novel, the tenth in the Polity Universe and the sixth to feature Agent Ian Cormac, although it is a prequel to the others. Although I'd heard a lot about Neal Asher in the past, I hadn't picked up any of his books u…

As some of you are aware we are looking at an upcoming DM8.0. What this means is that there is currently a need for some help in the development of the feature list we would like with DM8. I would like to assure you that this is not in response necessarily to the slowness of DM or the problems we've had in the past with the message boards. In general we do this every couple of years to make sure we provide you with the best experience possible. One thing we are looking at heavily is a unified Dragonmount in terms of login. We have manage to get most of this function but there are still a few peices which have not been done, and in this we need your help. …

The end of winter. Finally. Cold eases toward warm. Deep, dark snow clouds grudgingly give way to lighter, puffier, spring shower clouds. The first Robin proclaims the arrival of a brand new, joyous season. Once white, now dirty snow gradually recedes to moisten the soil thus making it prime for new growth. People who have been suffering the dreaded "Cabin Fever" can be seen emerging from their long winter's hibernation. Smiles are genuine as children frolic on the brown grass and dig trenches to connect the mud puddles. Trees show signs of new growth and begin to spawn buds that will be the new crop of leaves. New lambs. …

Anyone a tennis fanatic? I personally think that Marat Safin could be the best tennis player in the world, even better than Roger Federer or Rafael Nadal, if he would just apply himself. If anyone saw the 2005 Australian Open, they know how good Safin is. He just parties and drinks too much and doesn't apply himself. Anyone want to discuss, argue or debate. Anything about tennis.

The month of March is Classical Music Month at the Band of the Red Hand. And as a result, our all main activities will have a Classical music feel to them, which I will outline below. I hope you take some time to check them out and hopefully get involved. "It's A Knockout" will be running for 2 weeks during March as DMers and Banders determine their favourite piece of Classical music from the 16 bits I have nominated. Each day, a knock-out tie goes up with links to YouTube and the pieces. All you need to do is listen and post your vote. It's that simple! In order to go the thread quickly, it can be found here. Our weekly thread "Tune or No Tune" also has a…

Seen a couple of adds for the show on tv. Took a gander at its website (http://www.legendoftheseeker.com/. Not sure if I am intrested or not. I won't be able to watch it either way, since WIVB and WNLO are both broadcasting companies for CBS/CW and are currently in a contract dispute with Time Warner, so 250,000 cable subscribers in WNY are without their evening news or sunday football on CBS. Curious to see what the intrest is out there for this show.....

Okay, what I really want to know, is if Lord Luc from The Shadow Rising, is the weirdo shape shifter guy who, in I think it's Crossroads of Twilight, Killed the two old people in their bed. He jumped from the dream world into the real one to kill two people (supposedly Perrin and Faile) Something blah blah blah nephew and what not. I'm so lost

When you think about living a life following the "Way of the Leaf", what comes to mind? In other words, besides the hints that RJ gave us in the series, what behavior do you consider proper and necessary for following this belief? In case you are shy or don't understand what I'm getting at, I'll give some examples to get this started. Please, by all means, jump in and add your own. Since this is a world of fantasy, I doubt that there could be many "wrong" answers (IMO)? Non-violent, obviously. Polite, in most cases, I'd guess. Easy going? I think maybe. Flexible? Probably. Good sense of humor? I don't know. RJ mentioned Aiel humor. I do…

Got a question for you all learned readers. My girl has been reading the twilight series by Stephanie Myer, and while intersting seems a bit juvenile and romantic for my tastes. The thing is vampire books and movies interest me, so my question is does anyone know of any good vampire books or preferably a series. Only thing is that it to be an adult vampire theme not young adult or anything like that. Also if it has as little romantic mumbo jumbo as possible. Thank you friends!
