This particular thing is, I think, just virtual signs sent via email.

Nice thing is that the internet makes all that stuff so much easier.

That, and people who you are separated from for a long time.... Like the people who founded the website I'm getting this list from, they actually met through a mutual friend on some camping trip, but they lived in separate states until just recently, when they finally got to move in together. I think...3? 4? years they were long-distance... And there are always the people who meet their significant other online....
