OK this is confusing to me. In TFOH we see that Nynaeve cannot channel fire in Tel'aran'rhiod, only spirit. In fact she captures Moghedien in Tel'aran'rhiod by imagining an a'dam around her neck, not by using one power. And she subdues Moghedien by keeping this image of her being captured in her mind firmly --despite Moghedien's attempts to imagine herself being released. She practically defeats Moghedien in a contest of wills! But then Nynaeve uses Moghedien's power to weave a wall of fire and send it to Rahvin. And Rahvin burns! Now I thought you can only channel spirit in Tel'aran'rhiod, even if you are a Forsaken. How this could be? PS: I know that…

I have been thinking a lot recently about Rand's role in the grand scheme of the pattern. Especially with ToM where we gain a lot more insight into Lews Therin as Rand has finally gained the entirety of his consciousness. This gives us a new insight into Rand's role(past and present) as a catalyst in changing ages. The reason I bring this up is that we know Rand is trying to permanently defeat the Dark One. Throughout the series we are given signs that Rand is seemingly unique. Graendal even remarks on it in FoH, "It may well be that, as many believe, all are born and reborn as the Wheel turns, but nothing like this has ever happened that I have read. A specific …

So, I finally (after months of convincing) got my boyfriend to pick up EotW for the first time. I have personally read the series all the way through at least 7 times. What does he do? Throws me for a loop by the end of the prologue. I'm sure someone has pointed this out before here somewhere, but I really need to know... At the end of the prologue, in the prophecies that speak of the Dragon, it says they were recorded in the Fourth Age. While I can't remember what age the Age of Legends was, numerically speaking, I know that Rand and the rest are living in the Third Age. My question, was the Age of Legends considered the Fourth Age of the previous cycle of the Wheel…

His hook nose would fit in... didn't it describe him with a hook nose? Plus, the Saldeans had problems with Taim more than any other people, and it's pretty clear (to me anyway) that Taim is somehow linked with/related to (in business, blood, or both) Demandred. The idea came to me when Ituralde was rescued by that one Saldean dude in "An Open Gate" Chapter, and the description of this guys hooked nose seemed to catch my eye. It probably aint Demandred, but it got me thinking about the possibility anyway. A point to consider. Bashere is mentioned being usure whether or not he could go back to his queen, afraid she might consider him a traitor and kill him. That's …

As far as I can remember, the only "proof" of the Creator's existence is the voice at the end of TEotW. Now, no character ever seems to question the fact that there IS a creator, he just doesn't interfere. Of course, it is very similar to medieval Europe, but still, a lot of things are different. In WoT, there are almost no signs of the creator - there is no bible, no myth of creation, no church or organized religion (I don't really count the Whitecloaks). As far as we know, the Creator isn't really worshipped in any way - no prayers or ceremonies. One could argue that the balance theme of WoT implies that there must be a counterpart to the Dark One, but even so, that…

**So in another thread, I got bored and made a list of the social themes that Robert Jordan explores throughout this book series. This was one of the many points I identified: "...the idea that history will inevitably repeat itself. RJ's interpretation of the idea of a Wheel of Time implies that this repetition is almost literal, owing to reincarnation and a repetition of some events (i.e. Artur Hawkwing conquering the world in a short span, and his empire crumbling rapidly on hearing of his demise. This is exactly what happened to Alexander the Great, Genghis Khan, Atilla the Hun, and Hitler, just under slightly different circumstances). Even the Illianer Companions …

So, there is a lot of hate for the major female chacters in the story. In various threads the female character bashing almost inevitably pops up. So i decided to make a thread (and I am sure there are dozens of others like it, but I havent seen one post tGS, so ill refresh it) about exactly WHY you dont like the female characters. Because, you hear. "oh that Egwene is a little..." but rarely WHY that person hates them so much. You can list the stupid things that character has done, but I just thought a more in depth thread about the topic might be interesting. So, here are the main candidates for the most hated award. Faile: Definitely has to be the most ha…

First off I love WoT so don't be too mean lol. My main problem with WoT is that I'm a total Rand, Matt and Perrin, up to book 8,fan. I hate to admit it but I've skipped entire chapeters over numerous main, and minor charecters just to read about the Dragon, The Prince of Ravens and Goldeneyes. I just wish their wasn't as many minor charecters. Problem 2, I CAN'T stand The White Tower, they just seem like tyrants to me and it just annoys me lol. Well those are my problems.

Hi all, Fist time poster, long time lurker. as soon as I read about mat losing his eye this topic came to me and I had to post the observation. I know it doesn't quite fit since Perrin no longer holds his axe, but come on. who else saw this cute little allusion?

I think I remember reading _somewhere_ that no AoL Aes Sedai survived the Breaking. I think it was a quote from RJ, but I'm not entirely sure, since I don't seem to find it now. Is it stated anywhere? If yes, where? I mean, theoretically some could've survived those 300 years. I just have this memory of reading that at the end of the Breaking, everyone who had lived during the AoL was dead. I know it says that the Breaking ended when the last male Aes Sedai died, so I'm not referring to that.

Quick question (search doesn't work for under 4 chars :)) In Towers of Midnight (still reading so no spoilers please :)), Tam appears with Perrin - a few chapters in when sellswords are joining his group - but then a few chapters later when Rand returns to Tear, then again back with Perrin when they're talking about battling the Whitecloaks. Did Tam learn to travel or is this a mistake? Thanks

So I've been wondering why is the raven, a symbol of the dark one used by the Seanchan instead of the Hawk which was the symbol of Artur Hawking who they descend from?

In the prologue we see the Borderland outposts being attacked. They didn't seem to be posts anywhere near Tarwin's Gap and if the Shadowspawn are attacking all along the border then what's the point of Tarwin's Gap? Why would any of the Shadowspawn go there if they could just cross over any point of the Border?

I recently got back into the series, after abandoning it when Robert got sick, figuring I'd never know the end of it. Must say, I really enjoy the new books. Most of all, - Far far less Vogue writing; the endless passages about the dresses, in blues and yellows slashed with cream, with lace and pearls on the bodice, which seemed extravagant to describe what would be "Aes Sedai #10" in movie credits. - Finishing plotlines, instead of starting new ones - Time seems to flow again. I remember thinking that between book 9 and 10, naught but a week had passed or something. So, thank you for picking up the mantle.

They are the two most powerful forces in the universe. Their battle defines the world for entire species and realities. This is their conversation, their duel writ upon the shifting sands of time. Our fiction begins: Dark One: SUP. Creator: Dude, drop the caps lock. No one to impress here. I'm just watching the Wheel do its thing, and watching your squirm in that little prison of yours. You know, the usual. Dark One: I'm going to get out this time, you'll see. Creator: Um, how many different revolutions have I heard that one? And from how many different timelines? I'm starting to lose faith here. Starting to lose faith. Dark One: I have a good feeling …

When Rand goes to destroy Natrin's Barrow, he opens a gateway, sends Ramshalam through, and a few minutes later, the maidens go through and scout: "...after a few moments, white haired Sulin stepped into view and nodded to Rand." At the beginning of Towers of Midnight, when Perrin arrives at the Blight infected village they found in Ghealdan: "Maidens scattered forward, veils in place, Sulin at their head." Perrin's Ashaman are too tired to make gateways at this point in time, so how the heck is she getting back and forth? It could be a darkfriend infiltrating either Perrin's or Rand's inner circle. But it's prolly a goof; I listen to the audiobooks, can so…

Who are these people mentioned in TFOH? I mean their nationality. One fellow with a dark forked beard wore silver chains across the chest of his plain blue coat, and two with their hair in braids-men, with a black braid over each ear below their shoulders!-had tiny brass bells sewn to their red coatsleeves and the turneddown tops of thigh-high boots.

[i'm just kicking some thoughts around. Nothing too serious here] So I've long argued that Shara cannot play any meaningful role. And in most ways I maintain that. The amount of screen time needed to introduce a full culture is great--it took two books and many earlier appearence to cover the Aiel, there simply isn't time left to do the same with Shara. But people like to discuss it, in particular in reference to the idea that Demandred is there. It occurs to me, however, that it is not implausible for Shara to play a role, they just can't play an 'onscreen' role to any great degree. Consider, for instance, how clever it would be for Demandred to incite the Sharan…

So I've read all the books, but i only have ToM at the moment, and I've seen all these posts about Asmodean's killer being obvious, but i can't find anyone actually mentioning who his killer was. (sorry if i've overlooked this on another thread, i went through quite a few but couldn't find it :/ )

The biggest obstacle for peace ( or at least a ceasefire ) between the Seanchan and the rest of Randland is the issue of Damane. The Seanchan would not part with their weapon and the AS, wiseones and the seafolk will not rest easy while there is a constant threat of them getting collared, not to mention those that have already been collared. I feel like the best inducement for the seanchan to stop collaring damane is to convince them that it is an obsolete "technology" and that Aludra's cannons are the weapons of the future. Certainly Tuon saw the potential of the repeating crossbow as a very big advantage and I am sure she will be quick to realize the firepower of t…

Why Amico Nagoyin did not tie off the shield to cut off the girls from power instead of actually maintaining the shield? Was she afraid that the shields would unravel in time or was she afraid that the girls would be able to unravel them eventually? Why Nynaeve and others could not break through the shield? Were they not powerful enough? Maybe they did not know that they could do that? How Amico can maintain the shield on 3 people all by herself?

Sorry if this has been answered elsewhere, but I really am enjoying reading through tEotW for the first time, but there's a lot of stuff repeated, scenes in entirety word for word. Once example is in chapter 17 (Watchers and Hunters) the following paragraph is repeated verbatim only one paragraph apart: "Five white-cloaked men walked into the light from the guardhouse door. Their cowls were drawn up to hide their faces, but each man rested his hand on ("his hand on" is also repeated the second time) his sword, and the golden suns on their left breasts were a plain announcement of who they were. Mat muttered under his breath. The Watchmen stopped their cranking and…

OK... Two questions: 1) Did Suroth inform the Empress that Suldam can channel? If she did not why? Because Suroth is darkfriend and Forsaken told her to keep it secret? Or because she wanted to keep it secret in order to use it against the Empress in future? Or was she afraid that if the Empress will know she will kill her to prevent this secret destroying Seanchan society? 2) Why the Empress forbids speaking of the Return until Seanchan will be back with Tuon? It seems as of TFOH Seanchan Empress wants to keep the defeat at Falme secret. Did any Seanchan return to the homeland to inform the Empress that Suldam can channel? Those who were not held by Suroth? …

Ok this is a mystery for me: Aviendha opens a gateway to Seanchan. Rand follows her after blocking the gateway. Asmodean comes and does something to the gateway. Now the gateway is gray and does not show the other side. Rand returns to Cairhien with Aviendha. Rand is angry to Asmodean for making the gateway invisible. But the gateway is not invisible. It does not show the other side and it is a gray window but it is not totally invisible. Rand sees his blocking flows plus the gray patch. Why does he accuse Asmodean of making the gateway invisible? What this has to do with invisibility? Maybe Rand could not see the gray gateway against the backdrop of the gr…

OK please read the quote below. It seems Elayne did not understand every weave the Aes Sedai used to bond the man. But if she did not know each and every weave how she was able to duplicate it to bond Birgitte? Instead of answering, Elayne put one hand on Birgitte’s forehead.Physical contact was as necessary for this as for Healing, and the two times she had watched it done in the Tower, the Aes Sedai had touched the man’s forehead. The flows of Spirit she wove were complex, if not so intricate as Nynaeve’s of a moment before. She barely understood some of what she was doing, and none at all of other parts, yet she had paid close attention, from her hiding place, to h…
